I got a another wilton vise a 835 of CL to add to the collection so here is a picture of my wilton stack so far. The 835 was made in 1975 and the c1 in 2005.

Finished this Morgan Star 4 earlier this year. It had a bent main screw (at the neck) when I bought it and was generally a mess. A local machine shop was able to straighten the main screw. It came with a nice set of pipe jaws (not shown) and the handwheel. I bought the serrated jaws from Morgan directly - they are still in business and I added the 8 ball swivel to an existing threaded but missing swivel handle. The 8 ball is mounted on 2 cheapo 1/4 bearings pressed onto a 1/4 machine bolt that is epoxied into the ball. I cut down a 3/4 bolt and drilled and tapped the center to accept the machine bolt. I also reworked the swivel locks and fabricated one of the missing sliders. Figured I'd paint it since I had it apart ;). It is very smooth and fast.

GJ has been a great resource for me - thanks to all the posters

I took the Athol quick set swivel jaw (post 8412) apart to find the swivel jaw broken, and looks like someone tried to fix it by welding in the past. Don't know if I'm going to try to fix it, or write it off. So I decided to try an easier restore, and blew the Rock Island I posted a couple posts back (post 8415) apart. Cleaned it all up, no surprises, painted it Alpine Green, just because I had just enough in a left in a spray bomb, and wanted to use it up. Also, a couple picks of a 3" Wilton bullet I just finished. The jaw inserts are a little beat up, and it came to me as shown, with nuts instead of handles on the swivel locks, might just cut down a box wrench to leave on one of the nuts, did that on another giant C series Wilton I have.

Now that is an interesting setup with the hand wheel! I'm not sure I'd do that to a big Machinist vise, but a lighter duty vise might benefit from something like that.

I wonder if the wheel gets in the way at times though? I do a lot of sawing on parts in my vise. Hmmm...

I've used the wheel handles on mull vises. Saves a lot of time & effort. That black Morgan really looks cool with that set up.

I've had my eye out for a decent Gunsmith's flex vice for a long time, so today, I found one, and another at the other end of the bench!

Meet the Twins!

And added another 2-1/4" Stanley DP angle vise and a 1-1/2" US made Hand Vise to the collection:

Athol 711 Any info would help ? It has 3" jaws with light diamond pattern and I like the lead jaw covers and the fixed screw in handle. The two front mounting holes are right on the edge of the bench because of the slight hump on the bottom.

That vise is designed to have a notch cut into the edge of the bench for the "hump", then the holes won't be right on the edge.

Searching and I found some info in a 1914 high school shop equipment list. They listed the Athol 711 vise at $5.34 for the budget. So it is around 100 years old.
It looks like our "Vices" are the same, just different brands and colors. My wife won't let me have any blonde accessories though.

I have it's twin, in fact I have 2 of them. The first one ended up gray, latest will be metallic blue to match a Record 3VS I have.
Do you have any idea how to date these? While I was taking it apart and scraping off the loose paint, I found two stampings on top of the back jaw; "5" and "10-62". Could the latter be the date of manufacture?

I'm sure some may feel I paid too much for it ($60), but it's in excellent shape. It still cost me less than the box store vise I got several years ago, before I knew any better. I'm probably going to have it bead blasted. I'm not sure if I'll even paint it yet. I'm rather fond of bare metal.

I finally got a big vise. :bounce: It is a Columbian 206M2 with the T-shaped jaws. It seems to be in pretty good shape. I haven't cleaned it up yet, but so far I see no wear or abuse. It still has some of the red paint on it. There is old grease on the moving parts, so someone took care of it.

I traded the local scrap metal guy about $100 worth of scrap for it.

I think I'll just clean it up and not repaint it, since I intend to use it for heavy equipment repairs. I think I'll remove the remaining pipe jaw (but save it) since I have a couple of good pipe vises already. That should give more room inside the throat to clear irregular objects. I'll bet that is why the front pipe jaw was missing.

The first three photos are of the vise as it came "out of the wild." The last photo is of the dynamic jaw face after a minute with a hand wire brush.

I'm trying to decide how to mount this thing. I am leaning toward a concrete and steel base that I can move around the shop with a forklift or pallet jack. I think it should weigh at least 1,000 lbs. to be solid enough to reef on the size of work this vise can handle. :D

That is an 8D battery behind it, in addition to the pop can for size reference.

Dear GJ Friends,
I picked up a fairly nice Wilton 9450 this week. I need to get some new jaws from KMScott and a new swivel ring and then it is ready for restoration. Does anyone know if these rings are still available or does anyone have an extra used one they want to sell??
Thanks Greg

Yeah, that's what we all say, but after staring at it long enough you get the urge to take it apart and repaint it. ;)

As for new jaws, I think either Reed or Wilton (or both) make that model Colombian so you could probably order replacement jaws from them if you really wanted. Also I think http://www.viseparts.com might have them.

As for the guy with the broken Wilton part... Try calling Wilton. ;)

Update - It looks like wilton P/N 101081 is now 1010810 for the swivel ring which is available on-line so I will order one soon. I don't know what the extra "0" is at the end of the part number but it looks like it should fit just fine.

Just a note - when you get the new swivel ring you might need to file it to function properly. I had a 3.5" Wilton bullet and the swivel ring would not release when the swivel clamp bolts were loosened. I painted the tapered edge of the swivel ring with a sharpie pen and figured out it had a couple of high spots. A few iterations with a file made all the difference. Good Luck!

I'll also add a note that the last few new 1010810"s I've gotton in had almost round holes that I've had to square up to take the carriage bolt. The new ones are **** and cost a lot! $60+

If any of you guy's are interested in a monster, there's a Reed #208, swivel base, 275lbs on E-bay right now. I've got one and they are impressive. A beautiful piece of history and a real work horse. The only difference, mine says Reed 208R. If I could afford it I would snag that one to.

Want to say thanks to Autopts for the fine 326 Starrett he sent me. It's a beauty, and the fellow that machined the jaws for it is an artist. Thanks to both.

Nice find Mark, I have two 71's and one 72. I have a feeling yours will end up red.
No resto for that one. It got sold later that day.:D

I just saved image of your other pipe vise attached to angle base so it can be placed in bench vise, great idea.
Glad that idea helped you. I mostly use my Reed No. 1 for holding spindles and handles while polishing and repairing (using material to insulate the work piece from the jaw teeth).

This weekend was a very Wilton weekend with the grand total hitting 3.

First was a 600 and then i grabbed a matched pair of 3 1/2" vises. One has not been used and the other was beaten to the point of breaking. I'm gonna have to find a threaded rear nut but i should be able to get it going again.

The 600 has never had a swivel base becasue i got it from the original owner and thats how he purchased it. It was almost never used, retains 80% of its original paint and shows no damage to the jaws.:rocker:
