Finished this Morgan Star 4 earlier this year. It had a bent main screw (at the neck) when I bought it and was generally a mess. A local machine shop was able to straighten the main screw. It came with a nice set of pipe jaws (not shown) and the handwheel. I bought the serrated jaws from Morgan directly - they are still in business and I added the 8 ball swivel to an existing threaded but missing swivel handle. The 8 ball is mounted on 2 cheapo 1/4 bearings pressed onto a 1/4 machine bolt that is epoxied into the ball. I cut down a 3/4 bolt and drilled and tapped the center to accept the machine bolt. I also reworked the swivel locks and fabricated one of the missing sliders. Figured I'd paint it since I had it apart. It is very smooth and fast.
GJ has been a great resource for me - thanks to all the posters
Now that is an interesting setup with the hand wheel! I'm not sure I'd do that to a big Machinist vise, but a lighter duty vise might benefit from something like that.
I wonder if the wheel gets in the way at times though? I do a lot of sawing on parts in my vise. Hmmm...
I've used the wheel handles on mull vises. Saves a lot of time & effort. That black Morgan really looks cool with that set up.![]()

oakundeisen , what a cool idea !
454 those look real nice. Who makes the Alpine Green ?
Athol 711 Any info would help ? It has 3" jaws with light diamond pattern and I like the lead jaw covers and the fixed screw in handle. The two front mounting holes are right on the edge of the bench because of the slight hump on the bottom.
Scored a Paramo No. 4 from Craigslist today. My first real "vice"!
Just completed my second vise refresh.

This is a gift for my brother....just the vise, btw...he has his own shotgun, to go in his new gun room. He attended Michigan State, hence the green & white!

WARNING! WARNING!
My latest find. I just found these two Emmert Pattern Makers Vises. Paid $150 for each one. The Emmert TurtleBack just needs a good cleaning. The newer Emmert is in very good condition.

That vise is designed to have a notch cut into the edge of the bench for the "hump", then the holes won't be right on the edge.

Searching and I found some info in a 1914 high school shop equipment list. They listed the Athol 711 vise at $5.34 for the budget. So it is around 100 years old.
It looks like our "Vices" are the same, just different brands and colors. My wife won't let me have any blonde accessories though.
Do you have any idea how to date these? While I was taking it apart and scraping off the loose paint, I found two stampings on top of the back jaw; "5" and "10-62". Could the latter be the date of manufacture?I have it's twin, in fact I have 2 of them. The first one ended up gray, latest will be metallic blue to match a Record 3VS I have.
It is a Columbian 206M2 with the T-shaped jaws. It seems to be in pretty good shape. I haven't cleaned it up yet, but so far I see no wear or abuse. It still has some of the red paint on it. There is old grease on the moving parts, so someone took care of it.I think I'll just clean it up and not repaint it, since I intend to use it for heavy equipment repairs.
Update - It looks like wilton P/N 101081 is now 1010810 for the swivel ring which is available on-line so I will order one soon. I don't know what the extra "0" is at the end of the part number but it looks like it should fit just fine.

Picked up a Reed #71 pipe vise for $5.00, while pickin' this morning.
Just a note - when you get the new swivel ring you might need to file it to function properly. I had a 3.5" Wilton bullet and the swivel ring would not release when the swivel clamp bolts were loosened. I painted the tapered edge of the swivel ring with a sharpie pen and figured out it had a couple of high spots. A few iterations with a file made all the difference. Good Luck!
Glad that idea helped you. I mostly use my Reed No. 1 for holding spindles and handles while polishing and repairing (using material to insulate the work piece from the jaw teeth).Nice find Mark, I have two 71's and one 72. I have a feeling yours will end up red.
No resto for that one. It got sold later that day.
I just saved image of your other pipe vise attached to angle base so it can be placed in bench vise, great idea.![]()

This weekend was a very Wilton weekend with the grand total hitting 3.
First was a 600 and then i grabbed a matched pair of 3 1/2" vises. One has not been used and the other was beaten to the point of breaking. I'm gonna have to find a threaded rear nut but i should be able to get it going again.
The 600 has never had a swivel base becasue i got it from the original owner and thats how he purchased it. It was almost never used, retains 80% of its original paint and shows no damage to the jaws.![]()
