Hey, fellas. I haven't been here in a while, but I thought I'd drop in and show my small find from last weekend.

Got to a sale late on Saturday. The guy really wanted stuff gone. Not too much left of interest. Judging from the three car garage, I'd say I missed some awesome stuff. I think it might have been an estate sale. I don't think this stuff belong to the guy selling.

Craftsman drill bit case and a Proto spinner

Herbrand socket set (missing 3/8" and 9/16" sockets (3/8 drive) and the 6" extention)

Snap-on 6" extensions (1/4" and 3/8") plus a 1/4 drive 9/16 S-K socket

All for $4!

The plastic tray in the socket set is brittle and pretty much crumbles to the touch. Should I just toss it?

I do! I love decorating for the holidays but like most of the stuff in my life, I don't like spending big money on it.

I only buy stuff I need more of, that is good quality. 3ft wreath for $5, count me in. Box of white strings of lights for $2 = score! big rubbermaid tub (worth $13 by itself) full of heavy garland for $3 = woohoo! Animated santa, gravevine reindeer, big inflatable???? yes please Lots of times the tubs the stuff comes in are worth more than the deco--throw it out and use the tubs!

You just have to think with a big picture mindset. Are there cleaning supplies that you use at home? $0.50 instead of $6 means more money left for fun stuff... Garden stuff or yard decor for the wife?? Points for you!

YS, GS, and estate sales let me live better for less. They take more time than just ordering from amazon, but the savings add up quick.

Also, don't write off the sales that look like nothing but baby cloths from the curb. I always get out of the car and look because (at least here in Houston) those sales almost always have one or 2 other completely incongruous items. For example, at one, I got a pro-sumer level home theater amp for $10. Sold it for $200. No other high end electronics at all, just that. At another, I got a brand new 3M full face respirator, with new cartridges for $2, new in the bag. At another I got a pitney bose postal meter scale for 50c. (no postage on it, but the scale works.)

Anyway, there are plenty of sales that don't have anything for me, but often I get something neat or useful at the most unlikely stops.

Picked up a pair of old channel lock bell system pliers for a buck. Does any one know any history on em? And the channel locks also look like a cresent branded pair I saw on eBay.

They are junk and should be promptly forwarded to me for proper disposal
I collect Bell System tools and have never seen any made by Channellock. The fact that they do not have blue grips is quite interesting. That particular pair is for crimping small splice connectors, and the hook on the inside is for breaking the connector apart.

I have a mix of Utica, Klein, and Crescent. The newer stuff is made by Jonard Industries, who bought the telecom pliers line from Crescent a while back.

Zuk, I guess I was just venting a little. I do try and stop at everyone that I come across. Last Fri. I hit between 25-30 GS. Had a blast doing it but only came up with a few items. Specifically hit the ones that posted on Craigslist that they had tools. 2 of those had no tools and I was there right away. Very frustrating. Did come away with a nice little Craftsman Crown Top vise that I've made a swap with Nine4GMC. It all works out in the end.

I was talking of going "office space" on a garage sale sign last Sat. The sale was literally a block over from my shop, said it starts at 7am Sat, I get there at 6:33 and they say the tools sold the night before...

9/10 stops with "tools" mentioned sold just before I got there...Just gotta stay with it.


Also, like Blackmarket mentioned, we both are getting what we wanted from each other going to garage sale and swapping, not necessarily finding what we were looking for ourselves but ending up with it is just as sweet

And how old is the Craftsman breaker bar is? It has BE stamped on the bar to the right of the name. No other marking on the bar.

the "Long C" craftsman tools are basically mid 30's to Mid 40's.

BE was the designation for New Britain made tools for Sears [Craftsman] from 1931 to 1947.

To elaborate a bit on Outlaw's and chopper's fine info...

All New Britain, None Better, Husky, and Craftsman "BE" 1/2-inch drive tools in this era were either manufactured in the same factory or different factories using identical moulds. Except for markings, they are indistinguishable. Your breaker bar is a fine example of a black oxide finish. That finish, and the fact that New Britain, NB, and Husky are all known and verified suppliers of 1/2-inch drive tools for WW2 era general mechanics toolkits, leads me to suspect yours could be 1942-1945 vintage. Craftsman, believe it or not, has not been found in US documentation or toolkits, and is not a highly sought after brand for that reason. Strangely, it has been found in Canadian and British toolkits.

The garage sale season hasn't been too friendly this year. But today was another story. I picked up a 8 pc set of Proto Los Angeles line wrenches 7/16 thru 1-1/4 [missing the 3/8, 1/2, 11/16 & 1-/8, 4 Klein combos [my first Klein wrenches], long P&C 1/2" ratchet, 1/2" dr Proto LA sliding T breaker, 2 4" adjustables one Craftsman and the other only marked Germany, vintage Billings and Craftsman socket boxes with 1/2" dr deep & shallow Craftsman, Billings and P&C sockets and a 1/2 Craftsman star Trec ratchet.
The line wrenches are now enjoying a bath in vinegar and now I have to find the missing ones.

I run into that a lot..my neighbor bought the last night or some such excuse for not having any. I firmly believe that many put tools in their ads just to draw the uys in. Also many advertise 'tools' and they may have a couple shovels and a rake, maybe a few cheap or broken screw drivers.

i have been straight striking out this week... missed a few yard sales, rained on my day off tuesday... this morning, get to one, called off cause of rain... go to another in philly... like 5 people there, and the one guy with decent tools wanted $5 per wrench... tried hitting a yard sale, gave them a dollar cause the old punch thing i touched broke when i tried it out... blah. trying one before work tomorrow morning, hope to see at least something at a decent price....

But, the other night, the misses and I hit up a few thrift stores, and snagged this lamp for $6.

My second and third stops netted some Bessey Clamps,a box of Craftsman sockets ,a pair of Klein pliers,some C'man awls,picks,&screwdrivers.Total on those two stops was $41,the clamps were $10 each and the sockets were $15 for the entire lot.

I got the crown top saw at an unplanned stop, lamp from a tool stop and the Williams adjustable from a pawn shop. $7 total, not including gas and Icee...

I'm admittedly pretty green when it comes to garage sales and buying used tools but for the past few weeks Ive been going out and poking around to see what i can find. I'm not too familiar with the good names to look for with old tools, so right now I'm pretty much just looking for cool ****.

First is a 24'' adjustable truecraft (made in japan), got it today for $15. It must weigh an easy 20lbs and I only got it because it was a big *** wrench I could hang on the wall. I really dont see myself needing something this size for any practical purpose.

next I got the both of these and 5 various metal files and a pair of metal sheers last weekend for $5. The shiny one says its an Easco 62132. 15/16-1''
the other is a ????. its 1 3/8- and i think 1 7/16 it has some letters on it but i cant make them out very well. again to just hang on the wall.

Lastly for now is this set of pliers/side cutters. I bought these for $4 and I have honestly never seen anything like them before which is why I got them. Both mouths open and close at the same time. They say Bernard on the handles and Schollhorn co. New Heaven. what are these?

Got a few things today. Prices sucked (IMO), but I needed another die grinder. The guy gave me both grinders and the body hammer for $30. The rest added up to a total shelling out of $42. The Dazor lamp (#2124) was a nice score for $6!!

Anyone know the maker of the body hammer? The casting doesn't look great, but I'm sure it's old looking at the handle.

$20 with leads gloves and 30+lbs of rod.

$15 brand new electric snowblower. Retails for $140 on Amazon.

$3 for it all! Snap On feeler gauges made it worth it.

Also got a game cam for $5 and some misc hardware for a buck.

If that Craftsman tool box looks as good as the picture you got a steal on that, that oval badge is 1950's or earlier and I would have paid a lot more than $7 if it is nice! I never see the early boxes around here.

If the badge looks decent I would have probably given $20-30 for that box but I collect old Craftsman and have very few of the oval badge boxes.
