Has anyone successfully purchased a vise on eBay? There are some nice ones on there pretty regularly although for a premium price.

That's where I get most of mine. Sadly it seems the quality vises usually stop around Dallas and don't come this far south (Houston). Everything on CL and such is usually chinese garbage or people wanting more than what eBay for something that is a total POS.

You can find okay deals of eBay if there is nothing good around you. You just have to be patient and not get in a bidding war with someone. I just missed a Wilton C1 today that sold for like $114... :(

I recently purchased a Columbian #14(0,3,8 - I can't tell until I strip the paint) for $10 + shipping (the shipping was more). I think it went cheap because it's small and the swivel base and pins are missing. I'd planned on asking if anyone here has an orphan base for it I could buy, but haven't gotten that far yet. (I guess I just did).

I also have an unknown model T-78 for $7 and an unknown 2 1/2" DP vise in the mail for $12.55. I'll see them next week.

I haven't bid on any large vises because the shipping charges are insane.

Jake, how big are you looking for?

That's my problem, I'm not looking. I just seem to be buying anyway. :D An earlier post with a picture of a palm size vise has me jonesn'.

I have a couple Post Leg vises from when I did a little blacksmithing, but my go-to vise is a Craftsman 5 1/2" mod# 51871 that I bought new in '89.

stolen pic : 25yrs later, mine is in almost the same condition (and I beat on mine)

Papa needs another Reed 4C... You don't want to keep it anyhow, it doesn't match all your Wiltons.... :willy_nil

I am almost "complete" on the Wiltons, should have all the ones I want soon...
I've got all the Morgan Swivels... 180, 160, 150, 145, 140, 135, 130...
Good Prentiss's are too hard to find in good shape (plus I sold my #23 to Phy6)
Parker made WAY TOO MANY different models to even try to collect...
Not a big Columbian fan...
So I was thinking... how much you inspired me to get all the REED "C" vises, shoot, I've already got the tough one...
So, it's really all your fault I am going to be on HORDERS....
Thanks a lot!
LOL!

Do they have vises in Austin? I've heard great things about the city, thinking about checking it out...

I know what you mean. I'm waiting on my 2C to be delivered, so that means now all I need is a 3C to complete my collection.

I would eventually like to get a 6" or 8" Wilton, with the older style that bolted the jaws from behind. I think those looked nicer than the regular ones with the screw holes through the jaws.

I've seen some decent vises listed in the Austin, DFW, and east Texas CL... Nothing that makes me want to drive for 6 hours yet though, but better stuff and better prices than here in Houston, that's for sure! Last item I *would* have driven to Dallas for was another GJ member got a Reed 4C for like $200 on an obscure CL listing....

I've been trying to figure out if I could make one big grab up north and hit like 3-4 CL listings at once. Then it would be worth the drive.

I just missed out on getting a Morgan 170 (7") swivel a couple months ago from a CL seller. I hadn't ever seen one before but the picture showed a 170 on the side of a Morgan. Looks like you are one Morgan short, sorry.

I managed to get a Wilton 9400 with a swivel base for what most consider to be a fair ($220 shipped) price for one. Usually the 3-3.5" ones can be bid on for decent prices, usually the larger ones get stupid unless you luck up on one.

Biggest issue is that most of the sellers tend to forget that most folks will consider shipping in with the purchase price and start their auctions at prices that without shipping would be decent, but with are too high.

Of course, if you are in a market where decent vises are few and far between, then eBay may be your only choice. I had been searching CL within 250-300 miles of where I live for two years and saw TWO Wiltons, both 3" ones that one wanted $275 for, the other $400. Laughingly, the guy selling it for $400 says it is priced for a "quick sale"

It's time for everyones favorite fun game... "WHAT THE HELL IS THAT!!!"

Let's hear it gentlemen... I've got two for you today...

The first one looks very Bulletesque, but there are some major differences...

I have it next to a 9400HD marked 11-46...

No markings whatsoever...

Where did this thing come from?

Maybe it's prototype Wilton bullet #1. I know I like it even more taahn a regular bullet, love that pointy end!

I wonder when they quit making it...?
Did you notice if it was Chicago, Aurora or Milwaukee?
I'm calling my guy at Morgan tomorrow and asking him to cast me a NEW one!

It was the early Chicago. I talked to the guy, he said he's had it for over 50 yrs. I had the CL pic but I was bummed after I was beat to the buy and deleted it.

Here's a Morgan 70 fixed base:

The guy was probably 75+ so he was unloading his shop equipment. He wanted $150 for it. It was pretty clean so I was ready to pay his price.

That pointy one has early Athol traits with the jaw style. :dunno:

Here you go (autopts). Here's a few large ones. Lousy pictures, cause there too crammed together to get good pictures. Weigh too much to lift out, back too weak, just for pictures. Working on space for them, get better pics then. Had to take pictures for insurance purposes anyway.

First one is a #577.

#2 is a #577.

#3 is a #71 Simplex.

#4 is a Reed 208R, the R is in the chain shadow.

#5 is an American scale #79.

#6 is a Yost #34C.

#7 is a Charles Parker humpback

.

Recognize the two behind the Parker (autopts).

Finally stumbled upon a vise this weekend at a flea market. It's a Wilton 101028 4" model. Looking forward to cleaning her up. There are traces of green paint so I'm thinking about repainting it using Rustoleum hammered verde green.

I call dibbs on the Simplex & Reed!!!!!

Is that the Starrett 326 that Autopts sold on eBay a while back?

It's interesting how all these 7" vises keep showing up, but you never see them in the catalog listings, what's up with that? I even saw a 7" Reed once, but all the catalogs go from 6" to 8".... :dunno:

Is that grab STILL bugging you? :D Jason, you're doing more to upset the magnetic balance of Texas than anyone! I've been watching the steady expansion of your vise vice and I've been really impressed with the ones you find. There are actually a couple on DFW CL right now...I'm surprised you haven't made the road trip. I see a couple of Columbians, a Reed, a nice Parker 974 1/2, a really pretty Emmert ($500) and of course a few overpriced Wiltons.

I picked up an anvil recently and had the guy throw in a little Ridgid (USA) vise with it but I've got nowhere near the collection you seem to have.

I'm impressed with the restorations you do as well!

Thanks for the kind words. I'm sure some I overpaid for, but I'm kind of picky on what I'm looking for... ;)

FYI, there is also a Craftsman made by Reed somewhere in the DFW or east Texas area I saw on CL in pretty good shape... They are asking a fair price if you want to keep it, but there isn't any room if you want to resell it... I think I was just searching "vise" and it was a kind of generic listing till I saw the picture...

Yep EOC Jason, that's the one he had. And the one beside it is the #25 American Scale combination vise he had. That makes my second 326. Those are tough vises. Autopts can find some good stuff.

I saw that. It's a 5181 with the long tailed C and old style round bulb handle making it probably WWII vintage. He's asking $150 which is a little rich for a smaller vise. I might see if he'll come off that but it would have to be closer to $50 to interest me. Jaws are in great shape.

I found an Athol Machine Co. No. 87 vise yesterday. I've never seen one with a lead screw end like this. They're usually bulbous. Anyone know if it's original? It's either very old or scavenged from somewhere.

No it doesn't have the replaceable jaws :\ but it's in good shape minus the paint. I also got a 3 1/2 ERON, 3 drill vises, and a craftsman X Y rotary table along with the Craftsman 6 x 18 lathe with milling attachment... All for $390. It was a good day

what's happening with the Craftsman rotary?

I'm keeping that bubba... That table cost $100 of the total $390 I spent lol. The guy didn't really know what he had, but he had a feeling the rotary table was worth money. I still made out good I think. So I guess I got the lathe and everything else for $290  he also had a crown top Kennedy tool box there. I ran out of cash at that point, but I'm thinking of going back soon.

Mostly done.
A little digging with Google patent search and I found this vise has post 1912 jaw serrations but not the 1936 patent slack adjust screw.
I'm guessing that since the patent dates aren't cast into the side that its from the latter part of the 1912-1936 time frame.
Just guessing though.
