Here another. I don't collect Prentiss vises but this No 21 hit the scales at 108 lbs. Its really in great condition. Its unpainted and is a back breaker. KMS Scott matched and made me the replacement jaws which I think make this vise.

Why do people paint the entire vise? Handle, dynamic jaw, everything except for the jaws. It is stupid to me and there is no way it works just as well as if it wasn't all painted.

http://kansascity.craigslist.org/tls/3946481015.html

My guess is that the po is flipping it and didn't want to invest a lot of time in it. I wish that vise was closer to me. I'd buy it and restore it properly.

Did anyone start a Sony "show your fan" thread?
If not I'll be happy to start one.
Maybe a "show us your old/shop radio" too.

Below is a pix of my main shop fan, 1940s and runs smooth hour after hour.

Along with fans and radios, I think there are countless shop things for a show your thread: vom meters, clocks, benches, stools, etc. But I may not want to read the "show me your stool" thread.

Hello all

I picked up a desmond simplex 400 for $11 and it looks like it sat in water(swivel base high) then was rattle canned. How does one remove the swivel base? Does it involve loosening the lock down? It seems seized. Also this vise has one square head bolt and one lock down handle, is that the norm? Thanks.

I've never had a Desmond but judging from other vises that I've had, the hardware looks like stock.

If I had your problem, I would soak it down with a 50/50 mixture of transmission fluid and acetone and try to work everything loose by hand. Do this 2 or 3 times a day. I've learned that using an impact can be deadly. Also brass hammer can be used but be careful.

You will want to be patent on this. A couple of years ago I was tearing down a 1945 Jeep engine. It took 3 weeks to free the pistons from the cylinders. However, I was able to salvage the components.

Alright, I've been looking for an older vise to restore and ran across this today. I actually wanted a smaller U.S. made vise, but the price was good and it seemed like an oddball vise to run across in Oklahoma. I plan to start restoring it this week.

How much did you get it for if you don't mind me asking? They had one here in houston for $200 about a month ago.

If you want to drop that off at my house I will trade you for a smaller US vise:evil:

I think those are pretty good vises and for the $ you did real well especially if you can find a new pair of Jaws. I have a smaller one with issues but they seem well made.

Thanks! Jaws won't be an issue since new ones can be fabricated easily. I'll probably use stainless for the new jaws.

^^^ If you decide you do want to buy new jaws Record jaws will probably fit. Paramos and Records are very similar. I bought new jaws for my Record No. 6 from Acklands-Grainger for about $35. If it helps for comparison the dimensions are;
Width - 6"
Height - 1"
Thickness - 1/2"
Bolt Centres - 4"

Mine weighs 60 lbs (no swivel base). A good colour match is Valspar blue which is available in aerosols at Lowe's.

My Wilton Baby Bullet (2") came in today... Wow is it, err... small!!!

Missing the cap on the end, not sure if they make freeze plugs that small? Ideas on alternative easy to find things that would work well?

Date stamp on the key-way is 2-47... Oldie!

Mine is missing to, I measured mine and it is exactly 1" diameter. Might be a chance that a freeze plug would be out there. A good question for autopts.

As a matter of fact, yes! I was at O'Reillys and part # 555-097 works like a charm. The screw threads stuck out the back some (as you can see in the pic in my previous post). So what I did was use a ball bearing and a large socket to press a curve into the freeze plug. The first pic should give you a good idea, you have to get everything centered just right though. Easy .60 cent fix. Took a little finessing to get it into the end but it holds tight and I can screw the jaws all the way closed. I'm happy. Last picture looks a little funny but I promise you it's centered and a nice curve, just hard to take a picture without massive glare.

Started cleaning off the old paint on the wire wheel. Probably use the blasting cabinet to get it good and clean once I get my paint in. Need to get some new screws for everything and get the jaws off too.

Thanks for doing the homework on the end cap, I will do the same as you. That baby Wilton you own is in pretty good shape, I bought mine kind of cheap because it did not have jaws, handle, horseshoe washer and the back cap. But it did have the swivel base. I am going to try my luck on forming a handle using a clamp fixture and a torch. I made the swivel handles for my 2" baby, If it works out making the handle I'll post the pictures.

Just picked up this little monster with 5" jaws. Pic was taken seconds after I got it, have not even so much as blown the dust off it.

I am impressed... Well done Sir! I'm sure the handle will be perfect also.

Picked this up a little bit ago. It's a 1971 with 4" jaws. It was neglected and rusty but solid overall. It also needed a broken jaw screw drilled out and the hole retapped but that was a snap. The end product is decent.

Did you replace your end cap too. If so is that a freeze plug. It must be close to the lead screw. I like the smooth jaws, I have smooth jaws on all my vises here in the shop. Nice vise.

Zoomie
Your jaws are going to heat treat tomorrow along with several others. I am hoping to get them back before I go out east next week. Be sure to send me a picture of your American Standard Vise.

Very nice! I am jealous. I have a Paramo No. 4 that I found locally, and a No. 1 on the way. I would love to find a larger one like yours.
