I am going to be away working for the next 5 or 6 weeks so I never planned on going out this morning, but I just checked the tools on Cl and a new ad popped up for a tool sale. It was a garage sale but newly advertised under tools to attract more customers. And it was close by. :shocking:
So I arrived a few minutes later and it was a little old lady selling out to move . And a friend of mine was helping her. :dunno: Good and bad there. So I went in the garage and started looking but a couple of Mexicans had already tagged the first toolbox I saw. Damn I thought. Too late. As it happens they were real good guys with little money and just wanted tools to maintain their Lawn business equipment. They only bought what they needed, and I cannot begrudge them that. My intentions were not as pure. So I bought a box of Wrenches and sockets. What to offer. The seller had no clue, nor did my friend. BUT.... Any way I offered $100. I could have gone half of that. She said $75 and the friend jumped in and so it was $100, but she threw in a Hot air gun. Here is my catch of the day.

SO OEK 44, 46 & 48 Wrenches. They should pay for the day. A few SK Williams, Crafty and various other wrenches. Armstrong Armaloy wrenches. Value anyone? To be continued.

Now on to the sockets. A mixed bag of SO, Craftsman, Williams, SK, Bonney, Proto, and a selection of others. Most interesting to me was the Walden-Worcester drag link driver and a socket. A "brand" first for me. There are also a few Plvmb Flex sockets and extension. There is also a whole group of currently unidentified and random stuff that can wait for a while. I came out with a couple of usable ratchets, SO and Crafty, and Indestro, and T-bar's, extensions etc from various manufacturers.

Sort of a weird day, nothing hugely important tool wise, but I did make another dent in the storage front:

I planned the first stop for a place that had mentioned and shown a pic of a lateral file. I've been watching for these for a long time, and CL shopping for one seriously for over a month, with no luck for any deals.

I'm also on the fence about what size, as the space I want it in is under some fixed height shelves so not many 4 drawer units make it, an none of the 5 drawer units will. Two issue: width and height. most 4 drawer squeak by for height, but are 2" too wide. I would have to screw with the middle leg of built in shelving... Not fond of a dog leg solution and if I move the whole thing if screws up the spacing of the std boxes I use there.

A three drawer usually is 6" narrower and about 14 below the bottom of the shelf supports. This one WAS such a three drawer, and cheap at $10, so SOLD! :pimpflash

I plan to fill the gap above with one of my 3x6 card file type storage drawer setups with 18 drawers, its 34 wide about 13 high and 18 deep like the lateral. leaves a 6" gap to one side. I'll store material there of something... :rocker:

This guy will house power hand tools like skill saws, battery drills and all that kind of bulky ****

Second stop got me a horribly painted DeWalt 4-1/2" grinder sans guard, but it runs and runs well and no nasty noise from the gear box. That seems to be a chronic problem these days... I may have a guard from another grinder that lost it's magic smoke. need to dig that out..

He also had an old wood shaft brass head putter, the grip is wrapped in leather lacing. never seen one quite like it, but I'm no collector... 5 for the DeWalt, and 3 for the Putter. he threw in the driving practice ball and anchor. I'll probably give both to a golfing friend of mine.

A stop at one of the regular estate sales team's latest gig got me 5 wire brushes for $5

attachment.php

Another stop got a spike thermometer, and a kite string wider. I was thinking it was something for knitting and gave t to SWMBO, but she Googled it and its not, though there are some yarn winders similar. $1.25

attachment.php

Next stop was decent in a small way, and I picked up this box right off the bat. more pics and the rest of the story to follow, and yes, that is the Kennedy logo under the tape:

Up at 5am to head to the annual NJ hot air balloon fest - I recommend this for anyone that hasn't been there - about 30 balloons ascent simultaneously at 6:30am and 6:30pm. They have other activities there that the family enjoyed until about noon, then after lunch I headed back to the same estate sale from Friday and everything was half price. 80% of the tools were gone, but a few finds. Here is what I got for another $55

snap on puller, remote start switch, hand saw

small channelock (about 6in), sk 1/4 socket, 2 fisher hose clamps, tire thread gage, telescoping magnet, big suction cup (bound to come in handy) and a spreader of unknow purpose, but I'm sure it will come in handy too.

And another $5 for this handtruck. Already have one, but couldn't resist. I'll bring it to work.

While heading home saw a pile in front of someone's house and picked up two crown amps and a ouija board for free. As I was loading it up, the homeowner offered me a speaker he had in his garage. Perfect timing because I need a speaker this size to fix an old philco radio that's been in the family.

Found one other estate sale. Only thing I could find was this needle nose for $0.50. Not sure the make, but it is well made.

I went to an auction this morning and got all this and much more. Paid $50 for everything and the "non tool" stuff was way more. I made most of my money just in scrap. Also got some nice antique German figurines which bring good money on flea bay. I have to thank my mother-in-law who spotted them and gave me a little history lesson on the maker. Definitely going to make my trip to the auction worth it about ten to fifteen times over :rocker:.

Okay, back to the meat and potatoes. Not much in the hand tools department, but I did get some cool vintage farm pieces. I'm wracking my brain trying to think of what to use those metal wheels for :dunno:. The parts bins were had for $3. I pulled about 8 pounds of copper out of them. Some of the items that you thought would go for good money went really low while the junk would bring a bidding frenzy. It was more of a quantity day than quality.

A large lot of shotgun reloading tools, supplies, dies ($30). I don't know a thing about reloading.

30 bucks for the whole lot is pretty good. I don't deal with shotgun reloading but do practice rifle reloading regularly. RCBS is pretty decent stuff; upper mid-grade quality tooling.

OK intermission is over, back to the Kennedy:

No it wasn't full of tools for a buck. I did find a decent Williams BP hammer with a new replacement handle (Old one is split), also for a buck, then dug thorough the "Make offer" boxes and came up with a double handful of this and that:

"How about $3 for all?" "Sure!"

Kennedy open:

The BP is a Williams No. 2 (24 oz), an Odd Spanner up top, AC Voltage tester (UL listed with a BRASS Body, painted, TELL me this isn't old...), Paint mixer, new Hasp, Funnel, Chesco Metric Allen set, and a Craftsman Crown 12' tape. (Any one of the Crown collectors interested? :dunno: ) A Koh-In-Noor drafting pencil, (I learned drafting on one exactly like this) Toyota DOE and a Barcalo Combo, small chisel, P&C center punch, a couple of punches for concrete anchors I believe, and that odd set of clippers, that also have a flush cut/tweese thing going on at the other end... :dunno:

The gun cleaning rod got slipped in here, it was from the next stop.

This was another Estate sale. Second day and mostly picked over (The all were). I did find a Monkey Wards hatchet, a cool old lamp bass, some Apex Sockets, a Williams 1/2 to 3/4 impact adapter :eyecrazy: a SO Ign Wrench, a wad of keys, what I believe to be a piece of advertising hardware in the US Pipe & Fdry piece, a gearmotor gear, and an extension (No name or # anywhere...).

My last stop had a "D" size flat file in the garage on a 8" base. He was just placing a sign on it for $30 including contents. I checked the drawers for operability, and to glance at the contents, and offered him $25. he accepted it! "For you yes..." He was actually very hot to dump everything, as moving day was coming fast.

I paid him and came back later as I had already filled the van with that lateral...

The contents filled a new moving box, to the top of the flaps in the up position... some junk, a lot of misc supplies, one drawer full of dog stuff (including some that leaked and blistered some paint and rusted a part of one drawer), and a few tools:

The cabinet sans base:

attachment.php

A lot of cable clamps and cable management widgets, in the box the came home in (After sorting it all out...)

attachment.php

The Tools or tool like objects:

attachment.php

The best of these was the Proto 1-1/4 Crow's foot in 3/8 drive.

The pipe wrench is a 14" Trimo missing its nut, A Bernz nozzle, bent tip tweezers the pair with the green cover has TINY scissors at the tips, (For stitches? :dunno:) a curved double edged Scalpel, a tiny "ice pick" a plumb bob, and some blades and a razor blade holder. Almost forgot the bottle openers!

a bunch of large cable ties, a few small ones, and S hooks, large and small, and a box of screw eyes.

The Accro drawer is cool, as I have been missing one in one of mine for decades...

A couple more pics to go!

Wow Lots of great scores!

That reloading has some shotgun stuff but the green boxes are for rifle or pistol sizing dies, and the grey thing below them is a case trimmer. (cases stretch when fired and occasionally need trimming to length.)

Great score on the record vise and the Whitney punch! That will go through some serious thickness of sheet metal!

My last couple of pics from the "contents of the flat file"

All the "tokens" are from Mack (Trucks) and all but one have dates, fro 1972 (2) 74-79, then 81. the one without a date has a hole so for a key ring.

The colorful one is a Tie slide, then there is a name plate with the Mack bull dog. Dice are from the Dunes casino in LVN, and some fuses, both old house screw in and automotive.

attachment.php

Last pic is locks... Are these good enough pics Jeff?

A BIG Master but no key and no number on the lock...

The combo's have that little key hole on the back so i assume these can be re-set, if you have the key...

Jeff If I have the number from the back will that say what the key is? :dunno:

Outlaw - I want that wad of random keys! On the combination lock, I do believe the number on the back will tell you what key it is, and I can probably help with that!

Well, I didn't buy a single tool today, but I did get started refinishing my old PARK toolbox. I enjoyed the hell out of it because I stripped the hammered paint finish with my $5 yardsale sander while it was resting on my $10 Black and Decker Workmate from another YS. I pounded flat the dings with my Stanley 3 lbs. hammer ($3 at another YS), supported on my Harbor Freight $10 anvil. I did buy one item for full retail price however - the Sam Adams beer. Primer starts tomorrow morning.

mattblast-- I'll give you the YOU **** for those 2 Crown Amps. If they run, that was a heck of a score. I thought you sucked when you got the dolly for $5, but FREE trumps that!

And speakers.... oh my.

A lot of you guys got nice big scores! It's been stinkin' hot here so most of the sales are packed up by noonish. 'Course, that doesn't mean they took down the signs, oh no.

Spent most of my time at a couple of estate sales with high prices and no good stuff. One sale was 50% off, and prices were where they should have STARTED. I don't know what they were thinking. It's not hard to google the stuff. Maybe they get to keep any of the unsold items??!?? (J/k)

More later,

zuk

Oh yeah. If you've seen the last Jackass movie it's like getting "The Rocky". Wasting a sh!t ton of gas to gawk at a bunch of broken Christmas decorations.

Paid about $12 each for 4 boxes and a roaster lid full of sockets at a farm auction. After some sorting and ditching the broken box there are a lot of decent tools.
