Re: what did you do in your garage today?

I know next to nothing about mechanical stuff but am trying to learn, so I got a free weed eater that my buddy was going to throw away because it wouldn't run. Tore it apart found and fixed the cracked and leaking fuel line that was dumping gas everywhere and then pulled the spark plug and sprayed some sea foam in it as well as the intake and now it runs!

I do have a little trouble every 5 mins with it bogging down and not running right so I have to spray more seafoam in it and run it wide open for a little and it clears back up. The cylinder or piston seemed to have a lot of black junk down in it when I took off the spark plug, will that clear up if I keep dumping sea foam in the intake or should I try something else?

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Today I helped my wife clean out her car. Then I mounted a Haul Master trailer tongue box on my utility trailer. I was planning to build a tongue box but then I saw this one on line, constructed of heavy gauge steel and water proof. Here's a pic. I used four stainless steel 3/8 x1" bolts, lock washers and lock nuts. I realized that the bolts are a bit too long, intruding into the interior of the box, so tomorrow I will buy 3/8 x 1/2" bolts to replace the longer ones. Now I'm contemplating my tool storage upgrade. I now have a 26" setup and I need more storage so I'm looking at 40" combos.

My project for tonight is to clean out enough floor space to make room for a larger tool storage combo. Trash day is coming soon and I will have plenty of trash waiting by the curb. I'm also filling my trailer with scrap metal items in preparation for a trip to the recycler next week. This should be good for $25 or so.

You need to be using pre-mix gas, if that weedeater is a 2 stroke, which it probably is. It will seize up and be junk if You run straight gas in it.:shocking:

Went to the shop and Mrs E-tek said "Hold on Cowboy, it's family day...." And since she really made me feel like a cowboy last night, I had to comply. So we took the little bastards mini-golfing.

It's a 2-stroke and I'm using an oil & gas mix.

Pull the muffler off and see if it is all carboned up. You also need to make sure that you are using the correct ration of fuel and oil for the two-stroke engine that you are running.

Removed, cleaned and reinstalled the carbs on my 10 year old ZRX. It runs like a new bike again and so silky smooth now. It even picks the wheel up without the clutch, just like it should!

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Last weekend I finally got fed up with my old under-sized floor jack and jack stands so bought a new setup from NAPA.

View attachment 271557

Of course, once you have something new you want to use it, so this weekend I replaced the front brake pads and rotors on my F150.

This is the second F150 I've owned and both have suffered from chronic front brake shudder after about 50k miles. Usually requires replacement of pads & rotors to correct the problem. Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions on how to improve the front brake performance?

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

I would think by now, there would be a product that would keep grass from sticking underneath a deck. I am going to strip it down when mowing season is over, get it blasted, and get it powder coated. I've tried POR15, well it is the equivalent to POR15 called Chassis Saver and it didn't last long at all.

Well that is a rumour better put to rest.
You no doubt found out that it WASN'T the equivalent after all.;)

EXACTLY. Chassis Saver is FAR from the equivalent of POR15. If you are going to sandblast it, use (real) POR15 and you'll see. It's incredible.

A buddy of mine takes cooking spray [Pam] and sprays his deck before he cuts wet grass. Haven't tried it myself but I believe it would work.

While it could work to a degree, I don't see why you'd use PAM instead of WD40....

I bought a new 33" Craftsman Wide Cut Mower this year and it had a hose connection on the deck for cleaning out the underside of the deck after each mowing. My sister bought a Cub Cadet lawn tractor and it had the same connection. It is available separately and I'm going to buy one and install it on my 22" mower. Many of the smaller walk behind mowers also come with these connections now. See link below for Craftsman Tractor Deck Wash Kit #33167.

Does it work very well? I've looked at these set-ups and it would seem they don't produce nearly enough pressure to remove impacted grass and would just keep the attached grass wet thus accelerating rust.

Didn't get them done today but this weekend I finally got these going and they make a real difference in the shop. I think they turned out pretty good after cleaning and some paint, started out with a pair of freebee fans that my brother-in-law pulled out of a house he is renovating.

Installed my old Harmon Kardon receiver and four speakers I found laying around my parents house

I followed all the wiring from the garage door opener and ran it around the door trim down to my receiver.

Diagnosed the air compressor tripping the breaker... spins up to speed, centrifuge switch clicks off and then the motor bogs - does this a few times and then trips the breaker. Run capacitor is toast... did you know that a faulty cap will hold a charge for a long time...

My first idea other than drilling holes for 3-4 hours would be to drink, but some don't like that - so bounce a ball against a ball...

Cant say id wanna do it again but It wasn't that bad, took about an hour-hour an a half to drill while fiddling with other stuff.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Brought home a Sears Craftsman 15 1/2" floor drill press I got at auction. It was missing the handles to pull the drill down, but it's just 7/16" coarse thread so I got three 8" long carriage bolts to thread in place of the missing handles.

Cleaned up the rust, lubed up the mech, got things adjusted. It tests out fine. I'll get some photos and write it up shortly.

Today, I built my own version of the Edge Pro Apex knife sharpener. Retail price for one of those bad boys will run you $200 plus. Therefore, I made my own!

It works well when you follow the directions. You are supposed to hook up the water hose and start the mower, engage the blade and run the blades full speed for about two minutes. It creates a turbine effect that power washes the underside of the mower. Get it hot enough to dry quickly in order to discourage mold growth.

Finally picked up some plywood and got the workbench tied together. Have a solid core door to go on top. Need to finish the bench some way. I'm thinking of staining it, although it would have been better to do it before tying it all together.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Today I bought a full depth 26" Craftsman intermediate chest and top chest to replace the shallow top unit that I currently own. My roller unit is full depth but I topped it with an old cheap unit that I had for a long, long time. Now I need more storage space and this will get me an additional few drawers. I am pleased that the colors match. The new units are still in their boxes in the garage. I'm waiting for the wife and kids to go to bed so I can stay up late undisturbed and set up everything.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Looks like a candy. Is that like a silver base with a red dye?

Looks amazing!

The first pic is, yes. It's a new candy topcoat, Lollypop Red, on top of Super Chrome powder. When they're done right, candies look lustrous and deep like an old lacquer paint job. Thanks for taking a moment to share the compliment and thumb LordDiesel! I'm honored < curtsey > :D

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Not really in the garage, but I have to go there for what I need to work on the refrigerator today. Defrosting it and changing the automatic door closing cams. The refrigerator door is not closing good and the upper left side of the refrigerator is frozen at the cooling controls. I'll also give the coils a good vacuuming while it's down.

Hopefully the door seals are OK and the closing cams will solve the problem If not, I'll dig deeper.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Saved $600.00 by doing the 75K service on the wife's car. Mainly consisted of filters, checks and plugs. I let the dealer to the oil change (the have good price on that) and replace brake fluid (PITA). Beyond that, It was me, a Saturday, and The Expendables II. I managed to watch the movie, and get everything done in about three hours. That included a LOT of downtime for the movie, all checks, grease, cleanup, Etc.
