I may relent and use the hex or star, but really want the slotted screw if possible.
I had problem finding a slot headed screw for a vintage yacht. I ended up taking hex head bolts turned and shaped them into round heads with a file on the lathe. Cut a slot with a slitting saw. Worked great.
Get the Phillips or star drive, braze in the hole and cut a slot, paint as needed and install.
WAIT A MINUTE! LET'S NOT GET POP POP KILLED!

Wouldn't a fill plug be tappered? Like a boiler plug.
