Its also just about impossible to visualize things without a picture to see what you are describing.

Here are some pics including the slot with the hole that I do not know what it is for. The vice is a quick release and seems to function correctly, but unsure of the hole and slot.

The slide is 1 inch wide by 2 3/4 high. The slide is solid. I guess this is what you call a machinest vise. It is missing a screw on the end by the handle ( 3 of the 4 are there). So I do not know if that hole in the slot that goes all the way thru should have a screw in it or not. But I do not see any threads. The jaw slides back and forth over the hole when you crank it so it must do something. The range of the jaw motion always keeps the hole on the slide visible but the hole on the other side of the jaw can be seen when the range of motion is in the center of the slot

I saw that... My max price was ~$400.... Once it passed that I was kind of happy (didn't *really* want to pay that much), and curious to see how high it would go.

Just put my little 2" Wilton up for auction. Hopefully those crazies paying $400+ for the baby bullets are still around... ;)

I was in the game until it passed $375.00...

Now, we need to find about 25 of them, and we'll slowly feed them into Ebay, keeping the price up....

If there is such a thing as a 500SJ or 600SJ, they would break the four figure barrier, if they were as pristine as Maclin's 450SJ...

Be that as it may, I think the buyer (hope it was a GJ'r) got his money's worth...

That was a damn nice bit of clampdom...

YOST 206 just picked it up tonight

this is my $50 find and this thing is a beast:shocking: the Yost website says this vise weighs in @ 118# i belive every bit of it its 13in tall 6in wide jaws and from the back of the dynamic jaw to front of handle it is 24-3/4 in and seems to be in pretty good shape nothing is broke and everything turns freely,i need to inspect further the jaws are serrated and pretty smoothed out also but look like they are part of the vise i cannot find no pins, screws, seams or anything kind of different.
I took 3 other pics and it wont let me upload them will try later

Wilton 600 SJ is not a "bullet style vise"

I'm dying to know what the screw and nut are like, since they are the only things I can't see the damage on! :scared:

No kidding. But, I swear to you, whoever ole' boy was that welded it up was, did a damn fine job. There is no play, straight as an arrow, and one finger smooth to the moon and back.

I had to get it for 5 bucks. So much character. I'm cleaning it up and it will go yellow again. The jaws are so worn down, they're damn near smooth, so I will work them over and get them 100% smooth, and then I can keep it outside on the metal welding table, opposite another vise that has shark jaws on it.

I'm interested in using this vise. I have no knowledge of ole' boy, but being a welder, maybe he heated and used missile rod to put Humpty Dumpty back together again. I will never know.

Pray tell, once again, I must beseech the Lords Of Viseland

What have I here???

Got this guy at a garage sale this weekend. Weighs in at about 44 pounds.

First thought it might be a Prentiss (checked and could not find a PVC stamped anywhere. Then maybe a Rock Island (they OEM'ed for everybody/anybody). But the devil is in the details and in both cases some details are missing.

As you can see from the images, the dynamic jaw has 133 on it, the static jaw
No. 123
4 INCH

Any thoughts?

After seeing the $5 Morgan:mad:, how bout this $2 Bull Dog, doesn't it just want to make you cry??????

I finished up my only Hollands last week. I tripped over this little one at an estate sale Friday. After rubbing the rust a little, another "Hollands" .
I haven't seen a vise with metal sides riveted on like this one. It is bathing in Evapo-Rust now so we will see how it comes out.

You ****! Yes, the jaws are probably hot-forged and cast in place. Honestly I would get a set of of the 6" Wilton Copper Jaw Protectors off eBay for like $25 and be done with it. ;)

I wish my garage was full of SJ's of any size. Very happy with the sale. Thanks to you all for the support. Not finding much out in the Denver market to put into restoration.

The vise you have was in fact made by rock island. Here is a picture of the bottom of the swivel base on my Samson vise which was also made by Rock island. Notice they both use the same style bolt to hold the swivel on and both have a c in the casting number. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1376325633.914689.jpg

My workers are a Wilton I bought new 10 yrs. ago at a farm store and the other is a realy old Yost.

The question I have for the group is the 3 I've acquired recently.

The Columbian I have pictured someone else on the thread has refurbished theirs. This one I think I'll leave alone. The teeth on the jaws are near new. Picked it up last weekend at a moving sale for $3.

The two others are strangers to the internet. the first is a Dodge Slide Set #40. Never heard of it before and the patent on the otherside is from 1949 and is for the wood vise type quick adjust mechanism. It was made by the Dodge Manufacturing Co. in Mishawaka(so. Bend area) IN. It has een welded on at the base, but still swivels really well and works nicely. o metion one the internet about the company ever making metal products.

The other orphan is a small hobby vise called a "Chief" model L4. Not an HD vise by any means, but has some of the old art deco lines on the side like an old Shop King I sold recently.

Any help on the history on these babies would be much appreciated

`The Dodge is mentioned along with 37 other manufacturers that were producing vises in 58, in a post by Acacia in the [Every thing you need to know about bench vises] thread, on page 10.

Been another good week here. Found a nice 6" starrett vise. Pictured next to is is a 5" wilton I posted last week. Scaled 200 pounds, not bad for a modern 6" vise

Saw I forgot to post details from last week, Parker is a 3.5", Wilton is a 5" and anvil used for stand is 304 pounds

Here's my Cole that's in very decent shape. I haven't tried out the drill yet but according to links in this other thread about a Cole, it's supposed to be very effective and useful. Mine says St Anne IL while the others I've seen say Chicago Hts. Anyone know the difference? The vise model is No. 11 and the drill model is No. 7

That Dodge is nice! I saw one on ebay a few years ago. Unfortunately I wasn't the only one who saw it and I was outbid (by a lot). Follow this link to a search page in Google books: https://tinyurl.com/kkcukcm
All the links are for snippet views, however, a decent amount of info can be read in the bit of text under the link.

there is a cast iron foundry in st anne. maybe they took on cole work in the later days. st anne maybe 25/30 mile south of the heights on ill.1. oh yea they do good work there but u gotta take ur own brake rotors there to melt down on small jobs.

My brother gave me one of these back in the '80's. It wouldn't hold clamping force on anything; you had to keep re-tightening it. That's when I decided I had to have an American made vise. I searched out an industrial supply and bought a Wilton for $181, which was a lot of dough back then. I think it's still worth about the same.

I have one of these 5" Olympia vises in perfect condition and I think it the best vise I have ever owned. I am impressed with it. Sorry for your bad experience! This is my first post on this site, but I read it daily and really appreciate the contributions that all of you make. Thank you all!

Might be a dumb question... But how are you guys painting the letters on your vices? Are you using a little brush or taping them off and spraying?

I haven't tackled this entire thread but I'm working on... I can see buying and restoring vices turning into an addicting hobby... Just got this one on Craigslist not sure how old it is but it works smooth... It finished its vinager bath and now it's in some simple green... painting it soon...

Just scared to mount it in case I find a big prentiss or big bullet Wilton I don't want to be drilling a million holes in my bench top everytime I find a new bigger one.

Are the copper jaw caps better than the magnetic plastic/rubber caps?

You could mount it to a plate/piece of wood and mount that to the bench. Only one set of holes in the bench itself then.

Enjoy
