Paul - Were those made in a rapid prototype machine? Nice work. You could make a couple bucks selling those...

The big one (4 in) is a kit, after machining it I used a 3d pantograph to make the other 2 the white one was machined out of Butterboard scale 1.5 :1 from the 4 inch, the grey one is 1/2 scale of the 4 inch it was machined out of metapor. the two models will be detailed with lettering added before making RTV molds then they will be investment cast. I haven't decided if I will just sell the castings or the finished product. Keep checking the attached link for progress on the project.

Here is a Wilton 600 I picked up today. Unfortunately it was not a "u ****" price, but I wanted a nice big *** vise so I bought it. The handles had not been beat on or bent and the jaws looked great. The guy actually had two of them and let me pic one. He had quite a few small wiltons, columbians, and some others. He buys and sells stuff from aircraft companies and whatnot here in the DFW area. He gave me a great deal on a Stanley Vidmar box a few months ago too. There is my half *** restored Columbian 504 I got from him when I bought the box. I'm going to take apart the 600 to clean, lube and paint it. It was really taken care of even though it came from Lockheed Martin aircraft company. I looked on the bottom of the flange of the base and it says 101084 which I assume is Oct 10 1984????? Anyway, here ya go

67cummins from what I understand the 101084 number is just a serial number and the real date code is on the key under the moving jaw. Here is a picture of my Wilton's date code to give an idea of location. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1376443736.461277.jpg

Here's one from the scrap yard. Paid a little too much now that I know what I know about its condition($30).. It's a Hollands 14 1/2. It was covered in body filler, epoxy, mud, etc. some areas were more than 1/4" thick with the stuff!!

After wire wheeling it, I could evaluate the condition. There were major scars on the top of the jaws and around the corners. The jaw serrations were ugly as well. Another issue was the fact that the shop who used it welded it to the table instead of bolts. So when it had to come off, some of the weld went with the vise and some of the vise was left on the table. So the base was very ugly. I ended up welding everything up and grinding it smooth. My first time welding cast iron.

I also machined the jaws smooth and true. I may add serrations but that is a bit tough with non removable jaws. I just need to paint it and make a handle.

Those little guys are awesome!! By any chance could you make me one of those out of gold? I would love to screw with my girlfriend by giving her a gold charm of a vise.

Might be a dumb question... But how are you guys painting the letters on your vices? Are you using a little brush or taping them off and spraying?

I haven't tackled this entire thread but I'm working on... I can see buying and restoring vices turning into an addicting hobby... Just got this one on Craigslist not sure how old it is but it works smooth... It finished its vinager bath and now it's in some simple green... painting it soon...

Just scared to mount it in case I find a big prentiss or big bullet Wilton I don't want to be drilling a million holes in my bench top everytime I find a new bigger one.
image.jpg

No such things as dumb questions...Sometimes there are dumb answers.

For colors other than black, I use Testers paint pens that can be found at most hobby shops. For black letters, I use magic markers. After I do the lettering, I apply the clear coat. See attached pictures (sorry about the lighting). Like markers, you can get paint pens with different style tips. Some guys use a q-tip and paint and others use pin striping brushes.

I figured I would post here as opposed to starting a new thread, but does anyone have any idea on this vise? There are no visible markings, and the only thing I could use to identify it is the "6" on the right hand portion in the first photo. It was on my grandfather's workbench and my dad says he can remember it being from the at least the mid-70's. Thanks in advance

Its a chinese/taiwan made vise. It will jet the job done but will break....well, like a chinese built high rise with any kind of serious beating:evil:

The sooner you break it, the sooner you get to replace it with a fresh one.

My guess: it looks Asian, based on the ribs that are in the body, the overall style of the vise, and no brand name.

Looks Identical to the one I busted twice, and after the second repair, gave it away, and it busted yet again. It went to the scrappys.

Keep away from from any form of pressing or cheaters, and it will work, but don't even dream of doing even a U joint in that puppy, regardless of it's appearance of "beef"

Thanks for the info guys. I wasn't really expecting it to be a gem, some hidden treasure or an ultra-high quality piece, but it's cool to have a little background on it. It'll do until it craps the bed!

Well, I guess we all get bit by the bug in different doses. My late friend had the bug BAD! Here is some more pics of the area I am clearing out of his garage. I know this isn't the sales section of the forum, but since I don't really have a price on any of them yet, I figured you might all enjoy what the sickness can look like when gone untreated, LOL. They will almost all be sold when we get them moved and inspected. If the mods feel the need to move or cancel this post, I understand. Thanks, Mark

P.S. We only pulled out about 30 vises to look at them and figure there is about 112 total in the garage, going by his journal. My back hurts already!

Haha... Yeah the handles on those big Reeds will do some damage if you aren't paying attention. I've almost whacked myself in the face a couple times spinning the handle around on my 4C...

I really need to make a friction screw adjustment like on the Parker's.

Maybe someone already responded but that 101084 is the part # of the base. You will also see a similar # on the base ring..By the way..One very nice 600S

I love the Wilson and the Columbian ! However looking at your picture the vise stand in the background may be a little light :D

Here's a couple of Pics. of the Wilton 9450 I picked up for $75. on CL. I wiped it off with a rag, and put some rubber bumpers on the handle, and it's going back into service.

The big Morgan is the only one I'd consider at those prices. That would be decent deal for what he is asking. The red vise would be good at about $30 and the Wilton looks just like my crappy Sears vise.

Hello Vise Friends,

I have some questions about making a pedestal base, and I need some GJ welding experts guidance. I have a large compressor pulley / flywheel that is 23" did., 4" thick and weighs 112# (see attachment). I think it would make a cool vise base. To build this, I have a 180 amp, AC welder and a variety of sticks. BTW, I am what's considered an experienced casual welder.

My plan is to weld a large pipe on to the center of the wheel and weld a plate on top of the vise. I will also weld gussets that will support the pipe to the wheel and gussets that will support the plate to the pipe.

I have seen stands similar to what I've described above.
1. What would be the best rod to use when welding the pipe & gussets to the wheel?
2. What would be the best setting on my welder?
3. Although I would like to use my 180 amp AC welder, would I be better off using another style of welding (mig, DC, etc.)?

Thanks in advance.

I'm going to take a stab in the dark and say that is cast metal. It's not that you can't weld to it, you will need specific sticks to do so. I'm sure some experts will chime in here soon enough.
