Sat. was a bust. 5 yard sales = Bupkus
Today started off well, until the first stop. I was really looking forward to a sale that advertised tools just down the street from me. I showed up just as they opened - Ryobi and chicom.
ARRRRRGGGGGG !
Went to the flea markets instead. Both were busy.
At the second (first pic), I found :
Cman V 3/8" speed wrench
Cman =V= 1/2"dr 21/32 socket (flaking chrome and some rust)
9' 16/3 SO cable w/Hubbell's (the light wire was roached from over heating too often. But that's ok, I was after the Hubbells)
5gal old thread gas can (I have a NOS spout for it, I hate the new spouts)
All for $8
At the first market (pics 2-4) I found :
A Cman Scroll Saw ('48-'51) model # 103.23151 made by King-Seeley. I have been looking for the 103.23440 model, but I couldn't pass this one up. I asked what he wanted for it and he didn't have a clue. He just didn't want to load it back up again, it's heavy.
He asked me what I'd pay for it, I didn't want to commit (I figured $60-$75 if working, $75-$100 if it had a motor, but frozen - $20-$30 in parts). I didn't want to say anything, so I pointed out that the spindle arbor was seised, it didn't have a motor, and that I would need to make a stand for it. Before I finished the list, he said "Give me ten bucks!" SOLD !!
It will need a re-build (I hope the oil sump doesn't leak), but even if I find the model I want, I can sell it or part it out for more than I paid for it. I'm only out $10 in the meantime

When posters do not mention price, I interprete it as they overpaid or they want to flip it and they still overpaid but wish others to now make that difference up.

I did a rural flea on Sat. where prices were good and good stuff abundant.
I went to a urban based "antique show/flea mkt" today where 75% of the seller were urban hipsters selling **** at near or over new prices. Twas sad really.
To much "American Pickers" and the "like, ZOMG--- I found gold" mentality when in reality, the street value of said goods is far less.
Like buying beer at an NFL game. $12 a beer at the stadium.... $12 a 12-pack at the drive-thru.

I think your problem there was the words "Antique" and "Show". You went, you were shown some old stuff, but didn't buy. Compared to a garage "sale" where the sellers actually want to get rid of their stuff. 
So, so , so true. I went to ~60+ garage sales this past sat (I'll post details in a few) and even though I have never seen a full episode of said "American Pickers" (no cable), but have gotten the highlights via hulu and youtube. I am amazed at some of the prices people put on things. Throwing the word antique or vintage in front of it just 4+ X the ACTUAL price of the item. Ex. I asked about a pair of forge tongs. Looked like they spent time on the titanic so much rust, couldn't even open them. I asked how much. The seller goes, " twenty five" So I pull out a quarter and hand it to him. He laughs and says "No these are antique, $25 firm". I grabbed my quarter and walked away.
How useful are these?
I saw a pair on sat and they were marked $4, pretty rough and full of mystery goo, actually "Pro Tool" was the brand name. I passed, had it been $2, maybe. I typically use a large adjustable wrench or strap wrench for large plumbing fittings. What confused me on these was for the jaws to be parallel, the handles needed to be pretty far apart and thus would be hard to get a good grip unless you have monster paws.

I forgot to post this one after I teased it in the Crown Top thread 2 weeks ago. So here it is.
The local Restore had a Craftsman benchtop shaper (no motor, no stand) but I hemmed and hawed about it for a while. When I finally decided to "get off the pot" it was sold. But, they also had a Delta/Rockwell with a motor and homemade stand/cabinet from the same era. They wanted $125, too much for this cheap *******. While I'm not crazy about haggling over a price with a charity shop, I did. I asked what the best price was, and they told me that it was on a 25% off sale that week anyway. That brought the price down to under a hundred. Still more than I was hoping to spend, but I sucked it up and pulled out the cash.
Not only did it have the motor and stand, but in the cabinet I found a hold down tool for it as well as the wrenches, another profile shaper knife, and 1 taper pin (all in pic #4) . I found a new set of taper pins on ebay, as well as a reversing switch (pic #5) for the motor (pic #6). (why would you use a reversing switch on a shaper ?)
The shaper is a 1955 Delta/Rockwell HomeCraft model #BK 4375 built in Tupelo, MS.
The motor is a 1965(?) dual spindle Craftsman Crown Logo that I posted a teaser pic to see if I could get nine4's juices going.

When I first plugged it in and turned it on, the motor was stuck. I turned it off and rotated the pulley by hand. There was a crunchy feel to it as I turned it. I'm thinking that it sat so long that there was surface rust on the windings, and the brushes needed to be freed. After that, the motor started right up and purred like a kitten. I'll need to get in there and do a good cleaning before use (possibly replace brushes), but it's working now. The shaper is much quieter than I was expecting.
This model was made for home shop use, but is sturdier than what is offered today. It will see light duty since I don't really have a use for it. Unless I can find the right knives to duplicate the clapboards on a 90yo house I have in Maine. Then I plan to abuse the **** out of it and make it beg for mercy. No-one makes that profile of clapboard in 5/4 anymore, and I'd like to do the bottom in pressure treated if possible. I need to make about 200 LF to replace the plywood I slapped on there to cover up.

Found and odd ball lot of Plomb WF sockets. The flex sockets are 11/16", the larger regular sockets are 3/4", and the smaller are 3/8". Some show very minimal use but most are completely unused. Also found an unused 3/8" Snap on socket and the odd ball of it all was a chrome plated unbroached 3/8" Thorsen socket.

How useful are these?
I'm sure when these were designed the intent was so you didn't tear up chrome nuts on under-sink drain fittings. The same holds true with plastic. I can't say for "brand X" but I have no problem using these with the jaws parallel.

But a few vendors today were down to earth and I bought a vice.
That'll come tonite or tomorrow after a clean up.
As for yesterday, a few stops and lots of folks selling tools in new and old carry boxes that seem to love to be left out in the rain or a leaky shed or basement.
Bottom soggy but good for bargaining.
Yesterday was 4 NOS--really I guess "old-old" stock LOL, C'man rebuld kits with all parts. Never opened. 50 cents ea. New in bag, albeit dirty bags. but sealed.
$3 for the USA made fence tool. Good for zombies. And fences.
50 cents each for Nicholson files.
50 for cork back USA metal rule.
50 cents for SK Wayne SAE wrench.
$2 for a Richmont Inc Cali made 3/8" what appears to be clicker type torque wrench.
100 to 750 inch pounds adjustable.
For that price it was a great conversation piece or even send off to let the kids do pretend wrenching on thier bikes tools. Hndle and lock works like a charm. Cir-clip bottom so my guess still can be calibrated.
Goggle search shows nothing, but i plan to check if calibrated this week.
Owners marks and all serial #'s and part #'s on the handle.
$7 out the door for it all and no remorse.
And likely the C'man ratchet kits if not set up for my series (looks like I can only use 1 out of the 4 ) will wind up with this crowd some how.

I don't think anyone is upset, it's just that most can see thru the games and selling price, and that is usually more insulting to the seller than anyone.
Case-in-point: GJ classifieds has a seller selling a "vintage" Mac Tools ignition box asking $68.
That box can currently be bought new for $34 (or less from a driver) from MAC. Same box. Same logo dwr. Exact.
No patina nor abuse. New.
I own a vintage one and was at a loss for words.
Buying tools for a bargain and reselling what you don't need is nothing new nor nothing bad.
Ask any price you want when selling. It's all good.
But no complaining if it doesn't sell or it turns into a CL low-ball contest or you get called out on it.
Selling works both ways.
Know the mkt price of what you sell and price accordingly as to how fast you want to move it.

JJ those Richmonts are nice torque wrenches, but DON'T send one in to be repaired! I found (The hard way) that the want to charge $50 just to evaluate and by the time they repair and calibrate, you might as well buy a new one! (Exact same one you have there; old style they don't have the direct square drive any more.)
Worse, they DID NOT tell me before what the terms were, (Or I would never have sent it in...)

Well all the garage sales were so high or had no tools I went back to my favorite pawn shop. Today I got a Makita 3/8 drill and it works fine, a Craftsman 3/8 air ratchet and a 1/4 and 3/8 pat.pend. V code C-man ratchts with oil holes on them a 11mm C-man wrench a set of HSS srill bits and a couple of misc. 1/4 drive C-man sockets. No I do not resell unless I am upgrading and sometimes I pay on the high side----but today I paid--$15
Last week I stopped at a different pawn shop and got this 7/8" C-man wrench, a 10" diamond adjustable and this Crescent Ford wrench. The Ford wrench was so rusty I couldn't see if there was a name on it or not. It was froze up solid. Two days in the Vinegar and wa-la a beautiful wrench. The screw that held the adjusting nut in unscrewed like it was greased. I cleaned it up and painted it hammer gray. I like the way it turned out. Oh for the three wrenches $5!

John. I have that same 10" Diamond adjustable that I tried to save last month but was just too rusty.
By the time Evaporust cleaned off the oxidation the teeth in the wheel and the teeth on the moveable jaw they had so much slop and skip that it does not hold a lock well at all.
I can't bring myself to scrap it but only hope that someone can use it for parts as the main handle and jaw is nice and its an industrial finish.
Heads up, this is going to be a long one... 
Saturday was a first for me. Usually on Saturday morning I am occupied with a volunteer commitment till ~2pm. By the time I typically get to the ~3 or 4 garage sales I hit on the way home, I am told "Sorry, all the good stuff is gone" occasionally I find a few pieces here and there that someone may have looked over, but that doesn't happen very often.
This past Saturday, I took the day off for a long planned reason, but dedicated the morning till ~11am to garage sales. This weekend there was a local city wide sale. I left the door at ~7:30am (sales were advertised to start at 8am). Most people I talked to said they had the local gold and gun buyers knocking on their door at 7am. I probably hit 75+ houses (no joke, all close together and I sprinted from house to house). Very few had tools for sale. LOTS and LOTS and LOTS of baby clothes that they were practically giving away ($2 for a garabe bag of clothes). 
and other garage sale stuff.
Almost all of the tools I saw were WAY overpriced IMHO. Ex. claw hammers, --> $5 each avg. Screwdrivers --> $2 each avg, sockets --> $1-2 EACH. One guy was selling damaged drill bits for 50¢ each
It actually ended up looking like a flea market. Some houses had racks of crappy squirt guns, cheesy sun glasses, tupperware, grilled food, one guy was even selling can goods (no joke). Lots of kids were hustling their lemonade stands. It was definitely an experience.
Here is what I ended up with for ~$25 including a few items not pictured (wall clock, 7 FOOT pipe clamp, ab wheel, 8 brand new hockey pucks for $1). Not that great of a deal, but ended up with some stuff I have been looking for and needing.
Union utility chest w/keys full of taps, dies, die handle and thread gauge. All are USA made and in good condition. LARGE channellock end nippers (Jeff, age est?). You don't want to know what I was using as nippers before these.
. Battery charger (needed for an ongoing project, but couldn't justify new price). Craftsman screwdriver, waldes USA internal snap ring pliers great condition but missing the tips . A pair of pliers that were super rusty, but have ZERO side to side play in them. No name other than "Forged in USA". 2 USA wire stripper tools (no more razor blade stripping for me). A roll of I think conveyor belt material ~18" x 15', a craftsman oil can, and 2 simmonds USA files w/ wood handles.
Finally, something I have been looking for, for a long time is a hand brace. Well I find them all the time at garage sales, but people always say "O that is an antique, $25" They have no idea what it actually does, but they somehow know the value. Got this one for $2 a Fulton 8, wood and metal both in great condition. My dad had one when I was younger and over the years it has somehow got misplaced. He used it all the time, fond memories. I still have the goofy bits for it. Probably won't use it much, but am so glad I finally got one.

I think you we're ok to ask for a better price even at the charity store. Pretty big item for most of those stores.
I think the reversing switch has a couple functions. Some profiles might be run upside down/backwards for safety. have to spin the other way for that. Also in the case of wild grain, you can do a rough pass and carefully climb cut the other direction. not freehand, with appropriate featherboards and such. Like a clean up cut.
These things are very useful. Not loud because it has a real motor, not a router.
Get yourself some tool steel and make your own knives. That's the beauty of your own shaper. It isn't that hard to do. Crappy salt treated wood will do a number on your shaper. If you do that, plan it for early enough in the day that you have time to totally clean your shaper of the dust and shavings IMMEDIATELY. I'd probably pretreat it with a silicone spray or Pam or something if it were me. Allow the pretreat to dry so the salt treated stuff doesn't stick in it.
Use push blocks, read up on using a shaper, and be careful!!!!!!!,

Yea, I typically ask what folks pay for stuff on this thread. Why, because I try to find an average going rate for items on the non ebay market. More of a curiosity/poll than anything else. I am trying to find a base of what one would expect / should pay at GS's, CL and the like.

I ended up going to a very large trade day area, I wasn't looking for any deals just looking for things I can use in the shop. With the router and I'm fixing to get into wood working I've been on the look out for router bits. Well I came across these 2 that I liked and this Crowntop router bit box! Oh and I got the Ford taillight for my 1979 Bronco for spare incase I break it while in the woods.
I'm going to take a piece of wood and drill some holes to hold the bits and put the wood in the box. For $8 for all of it I'm pretty happy along with I got a happy wife!

I think the basic reason is if you want to resell it, then giving away what you spent makes some people expect that you should give it to them at no or minimal profit. (Hey! were Buds! - Yeah, on the internet...)
This is why I prefer to do trades where possible; I get a deal on something you want; you get a deal on something I want; if we can get enough together then the only other investment with a reasonably even trade is the shipping, and flat rate can help with that tremendously.
I've done quite a bit of trading on GJ, and hopefully the guys on the other end of the deals were satisfied. I believe so, as we have typically had more then one deal/shipment, and I have a few more pending as we build up to the next shipment each...
As for pricing when I do sell, I try to be fair about it, and usually figure a high and a low price for the items, and if there are a fair number, I'll typically go with the low average (Buy in Bulk!
) A couple of people have tried to low ball me on items I've offered, and when I point out that they basically want me to pack the items, drive to the PO, stand in line so I can ship the items, and get a "profit" of a couple of bucks they usually understand.
Yeah I'm usually pretty good about getting the stuff I find at a decent price. For Item I decide to sell (Pretty much few and far between) I don't charge Eprey prices or play the Eprey shipping games, so you just have to be realistic about the fact that both buyer and seller have to make out on the deal. It can't always be a one way street. A seller has to buy low enough so that when he moves the "product" to where it's value is higher they can make a reasonable profit. That's the whole basis of capitalism.
All in All I prefer the trades...

I was wondering how ya'll go about doing that being this is a internet site. I was worried that someone wanted to buy the s shape wrench and resell it so I figured if someone asked for it at the $5 price I had it and if he could produce picture of his collection of it for personal reason and not resale then I was going to just ask for shipping. But after staring at it on the bench I decided it was really cool and I should make a shadow box with it and other S shaped wrench so the hunt is on!!

That's a nice find!
I'd go with a free machining plastic, myself, I've seen too many bits get rust on the shanks and in a few cases, get rusted right into the wood... Something to consider

Their is always a certain element of trust. but those that play fast and loose get found out, and there are so many of us all across the nation it's not like you can hide. I can think of one guy on GJ that got ahead of himself and so much pressure came to bear he (as far as I know) made good on all counts...
But his Rep is still shite...

or, if you can find one, try asking a contractor that builds decks for a piece of scrap composite decking. It's a plastic and sawdust product 5/4" thick (1" true) that shouldn't absorb moisture. Not only will it save your shanks, but it will protect the inside of the box from rusting as well.

I buy as often as I can, I try to never pay more 50 percent of resell, (try) I don't buy to resell , I buy to expand or complete my collections and then sell what I don't keep, and sometimes I buy for members here specifically. When I sell tools It is always a fair price, even on cl or ebay. I figure I got a deal I will pass it on.

What jusridin said. I have done a ton of trades with GJ members and continue to do so. Same with my lock forums...we are always sending stuff back and forth. I do not do this to make a profit, I do it because it is fun.

I saw a post for a lista cabinet,"3 HEAVY DUTY LISTA INDUSTRIAL CABINETS $300 each or buy all 3 for $500"
Figured if I was interested I needed to jump. Wifey isn't real thrilled with tool storage purchases, so timing is critical to the old domestic bliss.
I probably didn't know enough about the used market on these and I may have paid a little too close to asking. They are heavy as heck. All the drawers roll good. Needs some cleaning and maybe some paint but not dented. They were very close so I don't have time and gas into them. I also liked the fact that there were three and the drawers config is the same in each cabinet, but the drawers themselves are graduated. I am thinking of all three butted together with a single top on them.
Probably SC750 with 6 drawers. Maybe EW. Still out on my truck under a tarp. Sellers photo.

you did good for 25.00 zkling. i like the roll of conveyer belt, i use it to line some of the drawers in my work box. i buy those wood handles for my files whenever i see them. the machinest stuff in the box was a sweet find. you had to work for that lot though. thats a lot of garage sales in one day brother, im usually good for about a dozen or so per day on the weekend, then i cant stand looking at all of the kitchen products and kids clothes any longer.

After taking a second look at your picture I can see the lock at the top and the folds on the base of your box. Here's a pic of mine. They look pretty similar.

New guy here. Hi all. My finds from last week. Total of 175 tools averaged out to just over 91 cents per tool.
The 3/4 breaker and everything below the Proto brake tool is Proto. Everything above the brake tool is Challenger or Blackhawk. The Speeder on the left is S-K and the other one is a Craftsman circle H.
The rest of the haul is a mix of S-K, Williams, K-D, Indestro, Armstrong, Plomb, Walden, Herbrand, Fiat, Spearpoint, Blue Point, Mac, Matco, Snap-on, Hinsdale, Bonney, Craftsman, Wizard, Cornwell, Easco, None Better, Thorsen. Most of this will probably go to trades in time.
I think some got left out of the pics, but you get the idea.
