If the bearings were oiled or greased, as well they should be, wouldn't they take on a lot of dirt and grit and metal filings? Should be some kind of overriding cover.
Also I noticed that one of the York's in Mr. EDGAR'S post #9936 has lockdowns with handles. None of mine do, just nuts for lockdowns. What is standard?

Probably best to use a light oil or spray that way you can flush it out? They do make sealed thrust bearings, maybe they just used the open style to demonstrate for the picture? Or maybe they mill the vise some to recess the thrust bearings?

As for the lockdowns, the "luxury" model has the handles, the regular models are just plain nuts. You can probably find a pair of lockdowns online if you really want to convert one.

Wilton had various castings back then. If Mark's vise says on the other side that it is a Wilton Vise No 4 Pat. pending, that's the early 40's production but remember dating the channel bar was probably the last thing they did before they boxed it up. That vise could have been at their Wrightwood Ave factory for a good long while before it went out. Also, Wilton's guaranteed EXP Date wasn't even a thought back then.
I guess the fact is. Mark has a beautiful restoration project on his hands and at $75 we can both agree..He *****!!!

Yes. It does have "Wilton Vise No.4 Pat. pending" cast on the side.:rocker:

Is this an older baby bullet? I haven't seen one before that had the patent pending on it. I couldn't find any date stamped anywhere.

Found a Wilton Vise. The seller does not know what model it is except that it says Wilton on it. Looks like the vises called bullet one. I am fascinated reading about vises and the work that goes into refurbishing them. He is asking $200. What would be a fair price if it is average condition. Here is is writeup.

the vise measures 10" high from the mounting plate and the jaws are 3 1/2" wide. up Wilton vice

I would look up prices for similar vises in eBay and Craigslist. After checking your local Craigslist for information, check the Craigslist in 4 larger cities around you. That should give you a market value. On a side note, $200 may be reasonable if you want to keep it and it is in excellent mechanical condition. However, I buy vises with the idea of flipping them. So I want to buy them for as little as possible.

I posted this in the garage sale thread and they suggested i put this in the vises thread, too.

There was a rock island vise on CL that I wanted to seebut I was stuck taking brush to the dump. On the way out, I swing by the free stuff section. I spot this right under the kids junk bikes, hop out of the truck and grab it:

<a href="http://s143.photobucket.com/albums/r158/shepbaci/?action=view&current=DA735FF6-E491-4E18-817C-D967807BDFF6-1144-000000FE21A8BDA1_zpsfbd879c0.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r158/shepbaci/DA735FF6-E491-4E18-817C-D967807BDFF6-1144-000000FE21A8BDA1_zpsfbd879c0.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos" /></a>

It's pretty small
<a href="http://s143.photobucket.com/albums/r158/shepbaci/?action=view&current=138BD028-235B-45DC-9A3D-3EC103E1FC5C-1144-000000FE28D3C3B1_zpsa2beaadb.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r158/shepbaci/138BD028-235B-45DC-9A3D-3EC103E1FC5C-1144-000000FE28D3C3B1_zpsa2beaadb.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos" /></a>

Obviously a Columbian 2 1/2" but when I googled it I didn't see anything too relevant. I think it says 702 1/2. Works fine, main flaw is the chipped part of the beam in the pic with my glove in it. Anything you can tell me about it?

I think that 454 Ragtop is right about the raised anvil area being older. The pending is a good indicator. I have one posted on page 470, but I don't know how old it is. Autopts and Zoomieport are our go to historians for the Wiltons. If they don't know, it can't be found. B100 probably knows to.

I'm pretty sure Wilton left Chicago in 1957, but I believe yours is older than that. I had a 1947 and it had a more recent anvil style than yours. I'm not sure when they changed to the more current look. So, I believe yours to be somewhere between 1941 (Company inception.) and 1947 and probably closer to the older date.

My key has no date stamped on it. It is just smooth.

Many older 40's bullets did not have a date stamped on them. Nothing unusual. I did catch one with the date of the reverse side of the key. . One very nice small bullet!

Says how many different suppliers Sears, Columbian and others used. Just like a old International Harvester truck. I can tell jaws that are purchased else where just in how they fit the vises, like American Standard. Imagine Chas Parker farming out their jaws. those 2-1/2 jaws on the Columbian interest me.

What do you think, too tacky? All I'll say about this one is that I looked like I was wearing black gloves when I was finished cleaning it. (I don't wear gloves.) But underneath all the gunk was a lightly used Craftsman in solid condition.

Edit: 4.5" Vise. This is a quick resto/resale, I got it basically for free. I love vises that fit in flat rate boxes.

Beautiful vise, beautiful job. Did you redecal or did you work around the original? Either way, some fine work. By the way, if you're flipping, don't tell them how little you paid for it. That's a need to know only, and you know how that goes. You've made that stump famous, but there aught to be a 400 pounder bolted to that thing.

Thanks guys. The decal was from eBay but I had the guy custom make the size for me to fit my old drill press. he sent me three so I had a couple extra and I put one on the vise. This style vise never originally came with any type of decal as far as I know. The guy makes a lot of decals, just search eBay for VINTAGE CRAFTSMAN DECAL and you'll find his stuff. They are vinyl prints but he does a nice job.

My poor stump is rotting away, I'm going to have to dig up one of these years.

And yes, I never mention what I pay for vises originally. Besides, I start all my auctions at $0.99 with no reserve anyway so buyers set the price. Haven't been unhappy with a selling price yet.... knock on wood.

Edit: This vise will go live around 7pm PST tonight, five day auction. Item number 390650483699

Balane, I like it. is the decal a water based decal? If so I have a bunch of old Wilton decals that I got from Autopts and was trying to think how to list them on a site or e-bay, it seems a water based decal would easily rub off.

Great job Balane

Thanks again guys.

I don't know what a water based decal is. It looks like a regular inked decal on vinyl adhesive sheet to me. The sheet is very, very thin but it's also tough because I've peeled them off in the past and they never ripped, perfectly suitable for reuse. I use a big one, 5" long, on my band saw. (Photo below.) It's been dirty and cleaned with Simple Green many, many times and it looks as good as new still. I definitely consider these decals, ink as well, to be durable. The only thing I can't say is how they hold up in sunlight because mine have never had prolonged exposure to it.

I love vises that fit in flat rate boxes.

How do you pack a vise in a flat rate box? I think this Wilton 1750 should fit, but I don't see how I'd keep it from flopping all over and having the handle poke its way out. I doubt newspaper and bubble wrap are going to help any

I've never shipped a vise in a flat rate box but have shipped lots of "dense" items. I always double box because the flat rate cardboard is very thin. Bubble wrap and foam peanuts are worthless for something as heavy as a vise. I pack with multiple layers of cardboard, double wall when I can get my hands on it. After I'm done I give the box a good shake to make sure whatever is inside can't slide back and forth. I finish off by wrapping the box with fiberglass strapping tape over the regular packing tape. Never had any damage yet.

Awesome restore Bart. If you don't get real crazy with price, I think it will sell quick. Very nice!

OK, Vise Gurus...

This "diamond in the rough" is on Ebay, and since I'm old, decrepit, and semi-intelligent, I've come to the "Source" for all knowledge in the clampdom kingdom...

Autocrat...sounds like one of our current Washington residents, not a vise...

Looks a very nice basis for a quality restoration...

The big question....What is it???...Columbian "Autocrat"...:dunno::dunno:

Fair vise, it's NOT a heavy duty vise. Its a Shop/Garage vise somewhere between the better machinist's Vices (With a fully integrated and machined slide), and the exposed screw homeowners vises.

Not the rounded top corners on the slide; that is a bent "U" shape that gets swagged or cast onto the dynamic jaw, which can be a weakness.

That said for the fight price, definitely worth getting and restoring. just don't expect to be able to beat on if much and not very hard, and definitely not for pressing anything but the lightest of press fits.

Yep it's a Columbian. I'm cleaning one up right now. hope to have it presentable in a few days. Pretty solid little vises. Plenty good enough for in home use, piddling in the basement, and such.
