It won't be on the test (well, most of it!). I sure don't want to be accused of adding to anyone's health issues... And we'd miss you, Rick!

As I sit here on a moderate, lightly breezy Friday afternoon, enjoying a cold beverage under the shade of my trailers awning, a beautifully restored orange '70 Road Runner rumbles by...part of the 2000+ car strong Frankenmuth Autofest. It's a beautiful afternoon, and they have just closed the main street through town for the evening festivities to begin.

http://frankenmuthautofest.org/

Here's Dennis Gage's coverage from a few years back. He's rumored to be back here again this year, filming another episode.

It was a great setting to finish reading "BELTSVILLE SHELL". A fun, quick read, and proof that I was right all along...I was born 10-20 years later than I should have been.

Thanks to Tom and Chris for sharing this great read with us!

Tom has asked for the book back by October 1. So there should be just enough time left for someone to make a quick trip back in time via this series of entertaining short stories (took me about 10 days), and return it to Tom at the Center of the Universe by 10/1.

PM me here if you are interested. First come, first served.

Finally made it to the end of this thread, after several weeks of reading a few (ok, many) posts per day.

Simply amazing.

From an educational, wow-factor, historical and inspirational standpoint, this is THE greatest thread on the net, bar none.

Major props to Tom and Chris. Keep this going, I can't get enough.

So now I can finally start replying, something I've wanted to do so many times along the way, but to posts posted like 2 years ago.

I still want to come out and see this place someday. What part of IL are you from again?

Sarcasm being hard to convey on the net, please tell me you are kidding.

I remember the town has an o at the end of it and is south of Chicago by a bit, I'm from gurnee. Can't remember the town name. Me and bb talked last year about arranging a possible photo shoot when I had my impala. Dunno what's sarcasm about it. New gf and I were talking garages and I showed her this thread last night and she **** bricks. Would give a thumbs up icon but I'm in tapatalk and can't find the smiley stuff. /tapa newb

Fireman164,
Go to the first page of your thread and copy the Uniform Resource Locator (url) from the address bar on your browser. If you want just one link in your post, paste it into your post. If you then preface the link with brackets around 'url' at the start and '/url' at the end (the '/' is important) you'll have your link neatly inserted in your post and highlighted in blue. Here it is with underscores just to show the coding and the original link -- don't include them.

[_url_] http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=215234[_/url_]

If you want the link in your signature so it shows up in every post, click on "User CP" (top of the page) and in the left column, click on "Edit Signature" (under settings and options). Paste the link in the box and preface it with 740 Restoration or whatever you want.

Thank you sir ,will do!

Hi Vince, I don't need the book until the beginning of 2014 so pass it along to the next interested party please. As our travel plans shape up, February looks to be when we're headed out west, so as of now I'd like to have the book returned to me by the end of January 2014 or so. Hope you enjoy it as much as I and everyone else did.

For those sitting on the fence thinking about reading it I'm pretty sure if you're reading this thread you'll throughly enjoy reading it. When I return from our visit, I'll post on here and send it off again to the next lucky reader. Let's keep this going as long as there are folks who want to read and then sign it.

Here is the link for the walker 740 roll a car resoration in progress ( thank you bob heine)

Without question that is certainly something to be proud of! Not only is the subject jack a work of mechanical art, your workmanship compliments it perfectly. In the future, every time you look at that Walker in your shop, I'm sure you'll always remember the enjoyment and self satisfaction of saving a nasty looking but perfectly good piece of equipment from the metal recycler. Well done sir!

For those who might have wonder what happened to me, in the last 30 days or so I've been home less than a handful so I've not been ignoring everyone, I've just been gone doing, um, well "car stuff". Chris and I just got back from 5 days in Tulsa, OK where...

...she had a chance to exercise, compete and show her beloved 1993 Mark VIII at the Lincoln Continental Owners Club (LCOC) Mid West National meet.

Hard to believe the car is 20 years old already!

Note the MARK VIII script on the upper left trunk lid if there was ever any doubt as to how she got her Garage Journal ID. ;)

I'll let her if she wants, to fill in all the details. Meanwhile I'll be getting some last minute preparations done on the '64 Impala and Chevy II and then Cameron and I are off later this week to Stanton, MI for the biggest, baddest drag race of the year, the PSMCDR. I'll get all caught up here soon, promise!! :)

"Beltsville Shell" is available for the next reader.
I will mail as soon as I get an address to send it to.

Great read by the way. Brought back a lot of memories of "Town and Country Esso" in Little Rock. The night shift was about like Beltsville Shell. I hung out there and Starr Used Cars and Wrecking Yard also in Little Rock.

Thanks for sharing this book.

I'm glad our "book club" is making quick progress. The more signatures the better before our trip to San Diego (projected for February).

MarkVIII earned its 3rd emeritus badge toward the 2nd Crystal Bowl trophy. That means the car earned at least 97/100 possible points (I'm only competing against myself). I won't know the exact score until they send me the judging sheets in a few months. I didn't see any of the 3 judges write anything on the judging sheets, so won't know what to work on before next year's Mid-America meet in Sept, 2014, in Rockford, IL.

There's always something to work on with these cars, no matter how much we "baby" them. The aging process goes on, in spite and despite everything we do. Mechanically the car is in great shape and gets great gas mileage. We averaged 29mpg over the entire trip which also included a driving tour to the Will Rogers Museum and a trip to my Mom's the day after returning from Tulsa (a total of 1500+ miles in 6 days with near 100 degree temps the entire time and lots of road construction).

Driving to meets is a frustration because of the inevitable rock chips on the paint and glass. Luckily we had no threat of severe weather (esp. hail) during this trip. That would have meant trailering the car which we don't really like to do. Now that I have all the bugs off the paint (not as many as at past meets), it's time to think about the very small chips on the windshield and the paint (I can see them even if the judges can't).

Tulsa was a very nice place to visit. We didn't have time to explore the area other than driving to the Will Rogers Museum and taking a bus tour to 2 private collections. It was a very small meet(34 judged cars) by our national standards - we usually get close to 100 cars. The benefit of the small numbers is judging takes a shorter time and we could be released from the show field sooner. This was very important in Tulsa with temps up near 100 degrees. We also started at 9am instead of 10am.

A fun time was had by one and all!

What are the dates for the Mid America meet in Rockford in 2014? If you don't want to make them public, you can PM or email me. I am pretty sure Thomas has my email addy.

Terry

PS Good luck to Thomas (and Camron & John) in Stanton.

I won't be going to Phoenix for the last meet this year, but some of you may want to stop by to look at some mighty fine Lincolns:

2013 LCOC Western National Meet
October 23 - 27, 2013
Phoenix, Arizona

Hosted by the Arizona Region

Lodging available: Coast Phoenix Sky Harbor Hotel 4300 East Washington Street Phoenix, AZ 85034 (602)-273-7778, (800) 716-6199

It's no secret. The LCOC 2014 Mid-America meet will be in Rockford, IL, so we'll probably take my '93 Mark VIII and Tom's '66 Continental Coupe. I can't remember the dates exactly right now, but I think it's Wed, Sept 17-Sun, Sept 21, 2014. Keep checking the lcoc.org website for the latest info. Hope to see lots of people there.

The Lincoln Museum broke ground June 1, 2013, at Gilmore Car Museum, in Hickory Hills, MI. The plan is to have it open on the second weekend of September, 2014. Pretty exciting! I'm hoping to attend, but Tom will probably be up in Stanton, MI, at PSMCDR (it's always the second weekend in Sept, also).

For those of you who are Corvette fans, the 20th annual Corvette Funfest, in Effingham, IL, will take place Sept 19-22, 2013. Tom may go on Friday - it's only an hour away. I'm helping run a car show on 9/20/13(Savoy Orchard Days) and will be putting together the prize bags and trophies on Friday. (If I can weasel my way out of that, I may attend as well.)

Here's a link for Corvette Funfest registration:
http://www.corvettefunfest.com/Registration.aspx

ihredo4 (or anyone else who might be there): PM me or Tom (BB767) if you plan to attend Corvette Funfest. We'd love to see you.

I am going to have to miss Funfest this year. I have a meet in Kenner Louisiana that weekend. Mike puts on a good event there. Have a good time.

I will watch lcoc.org for the dates for the mid-west meet. I only mentioned the PM because some clubs try to minimize "outsiders" who might not treat the cars so well. Have you ever seen a 5 or 6 year old climb onto the hood of a Corvette?

I haven't seen that but I remember several years ago, my aunt and uncle coming down to visit with their kids, 14 and 16 or so. I pull up to visit for a while and the kids are out in the driveway, bouncing a soccer ball off of the hood of their minivan. My aunt and uncle are out there watching this and have no concerns whatsoever about this. I cringed each time I heard that ball smack that hood. The fact that someone can take such little care of their stuff is just beyond me. Not to mention the lesson they taught their kids by allowing this activity.

5 or 6 seems awful young to be taking to a car show. I know that doesn't necessarily mean that people don't do it. My son is 5 and I can't imagine taking him to a show yet.

I don't remember what age I was when my dad took me to my first car show, 8 or 9 I would guess. It was a local gathering out at the drag strip, I think it was supposedly a "Super Chevy" meet. All I remember is him explicitly telling me that looking at the cars meant use your eyes, and don't touch anything. I don't remember the exact words but I'm sure there was something about the cars being expensive and taking it out of my hide if something happened to any one of them! He taught me to fold my hands behind me to prevent me from reaching out and touching by "accident". To this day when I walk up to look at a car, I still place my hands behind me as a clear indication to the owner that I do not intend on touching anything. And each time I take a peek inside or under the hood of someone's show car, I have flashbacks to that first car show and I am no less in awe now than I was then of these mechanical works of art.

Having made a not-as-long-but-close-enough (NM to central 217) trip several times, I don't blame you.

I'll be hitting up a friend east of Phx who likes car shows to see if he will be working "in-town" or up north to see if he'd like to attend.

Whew. Can't keep up with this thread. I guess I'll have to, to see what the property west or the original shop is up to. :)

Now picture the same issue with kids AND adults at airshows with aircraft that cost more than they will earn in their entire lives...:shocking:

Whew, I just finished all 7,201 posts! I would have been through sooner but I have since developed a habit of searching for old Walker and Blackhawk floor jacks which takes up some of my time. I felt pretty confident around page 200 or so that the test would be over before I got caught up. Then I wouldn't have to take it since it would be over. BUT IT"S NOT!!! Now, here I am posting instead of lurking so I guess I'm committed!
