hI spent a lot more than I'm used to today, went to a raceway that sells beer and has a swap meet....
Spent 70 for a bucket of =v= , 3/4 drive snap on ratchet thing, and a set of newer craftsman metric wrenches. Then I had a few more beers and bought a wright 3/4 drive ratchet with a few sockets for 15.
So beer and tools I spent 150 today

A few of the 3/4 were Plomb, some proto and of course wright.

Not a bad day I ended up buying a jet 14 inch band saw for $250 not a bad price but nothing to write home about. But I think I made up for it with these Snap On tools for 35 dollars

Sorry Warmpancakes, I can't agree, before they finally got to making RTV, sealants, "Gorilla Snot" as it was affectionately known, was the bees knees and WAY better than that atrocity black Permatex. With the "new" RTV sealants, it's no longer desirable, but it ain't bad stuff in the right application.

What can I say but . . ."ditto". Works great for door and trunk weatherstrip. And it's loads of fun on the boss' desk drawers. MUHAHAHAHAHA

My $2 Caliper cleaned up real good and it now has a new crystal. (Thanks to Trader Joe's Animal Crackers). Good enough for a bench top "beater".

Man a bunch of good deals y'all got!! I didn't go since me and the family went picked trash up at the park as part of our community service and then we went to my company picnic! The girls each got a gift card, one for $25 for Wally World and the other is $25 for Kmart. Then the wife got a $50 gift card for Amazon! I also got a bunch of shirts, long and short sleeve, and some sweat shirts for free.

But it's not the same as a garage sale and I got the itch to go in the morning now! LOL

Also these aren't garage sale items but these are the items I brought back from Oklahoma since my Dad came up to visit and brought these tools for me to take home.

It's my PM socket set that my grandma gave me when I was 16. I fixed a lot of small engines and worked on lots of cars/trucks while growing up.

And then my Advance Timing Light from Snap-on that my Dad bought me for Christmas several years ago.

I feel like the group here in this thread is my close friends of this board so I wanted to share some of the tools I hold dear to me. Of course I should have started a new thread on it but hope y'all don't mind!!

Once I remove the base and fab a mount, it will find a home on the Atlas mill I got last weekend.

That lamp is perfect for the milling machine - almost will look like the designers intended it to be there. Can't wait to see it done!

Brand new looking Millers Falls No. 188A push drill in original box for $2.

The best, a set No. 715 of Wrightgrip wrenches 15 pc, 5/16 thru 1-1/4, new in denim roll, for $100. Xmas present for the old man.

Interesting day. Once a year in my home town, there is a city-wide garage sale event. I go every year. The past few years I found a few things are were useful or interesting, but nothing that blew me away. This year I snagged a couple things that were a direct result of the influence of this website. In fact, it was one year ago today that I joined GJ after looking up info on a Wilton gunsmith vise.

Without the knowledge I have acquired from GJ, I would have passed this up:

That is a nice pair of Hog rings. I remember my Dad had a pair (can't remember WHY he ever needed them but I'll guess to repair a seat in an old truck or more likely the jeep), of the cheapest bargain bin hog rings. Painted red and I'm pretty sure they were cast. Globemaster? Totally NOT a quality tool... I'd like to find a pair like that.

I am jealous of that scroll saw thundermug, been keeping an eye out for a decent one for a while. The ones as pictured go for $100-150 around here $25 is a steal.

Today I went to an estate sale at Wilson's towing in Akron....I am blown away buy the stuff this guy had in that place. The owner bought a lot of junk cars and had huge stashes of stuff from those and other stuff for his garage. I was told there were buckets of silver dollars, indian head pennies and so on that were already gone Buckets of screwdrivers, sockets, crowbars.... Stacks of tire irons 5ft high, 9ft long shelves stuffed with just hand drills or monkey wrenches, pile of casters some of them basket ball sized, pile of maglites, couple of safes.

If anyone is in the area check it out 666 Home Ave in Akron today is the last day until 3. The dumpster was even full of tool boxes, and hammers, metal carts... so much stuff

Those stands are $75 and up on ebay, I would have been selling two for $50 ea and keeping the other. Double your money and get one for yourself!

Was out of town this weekend, at a trade show, got back and hit the flea market in town on Sunday morning:

pic 1: all FREE items
includes a pail full of new 5/8" lock washers, a few copper pipe elbows, a new drill bit, some weird brass fitting (plug?) and a tractor hitch piece. Nothing beats free for stuff you can use down the line...

Bought three ratchets made by Lowell Wrench Company in Worcester MA. They were marked $5 each, but at the end of the flea market the guy sold them to me for $1 each so he didn't have to bring them home. They are BIG, $20 bill for size reference. None worked, I have torn one apart so far and the gear inside is just full of sand and dried grease. Cleaned it out, added a little Permatex anti-seize, and it works like a charm now. Damn our disposable society!

Green metal box marked "Repair Kit, Tubeless Tire", made by Adams PSP, Inc. Has the military FSN number on it, probably 1960s or 1970s. Contents included the instructions (on the inside lid), two tubes of repair string(???), an applicator bottle for finding the leak in the tire, and two small Auto-Kit wrenches (I don't think the wrenches were originally part of the kit). $2 for the box and contents.

1-gallon gas can of an unknown type, made by Protectoseal in Chicago IL. Very well made, spring loaded cap you open by squeezing the handle. Paid $12 only because I thought it was pretty cool design, I love retro-look stuff.

My weekend wasn't too fruitful.

Saturday I spent way too much time chasing down yard sales that didn't bother to open, or had signs that sent you in the wrong direction. There were a couple of us in a convoy driving around in circles.
There was one YS that advertised power tools, and actually had some good ones. Mostly newer, but quality. No HD cheap junk. Unfortunately, there was nothing that I needed, or caught my eye.

Sunday wasn't worth going out, nothing advertised, and heavy rain and a dismal morning kept the flea markets empty of vendors.

I spent a whole $5 on saturday.

$2 for an oil can, and $3 for a sliver of RR track. (pic 1)

The oil can was timely. My old one was rust and crud encrusted, which was keeping the pinholes from leaking (not really). The leaks were getting worse and it needed to be replaced. Now that I have a new one to keep my cutting oil in, I cleaned up the old one. Someday I may plug the pinholes with lead to make it useable again. The other photo shows my old can (tall) next to the new one (short). Both are made by Eagle, but the old one has the logo embossed, and the new one is stamped.

The piece of RR track was thick with flaky rust. It got dipped in ER and polished, and will live on the mantle in the mancave.

Things have been getting busier at work and i'm starting to work on Fridays now so my estate hunting has been limited to the last half of friday afternoon and Saturdays. This pile here is a combo of a Saturday sale and a quick stop at a flea market.

The Saturday sale was quite a ways from the house but i had nothing else to do that early so i stopped by to check it out. I remember seeing some tools in the pictures but the estate company has a reputation for being insanely high priced and, when i comes to haggling, have the compassion and understanding of Idi Amin.

I was pleasantly surprised to see the workshop untouched, thanks to the reputation they have earned with the regulars and i went about my shopping. After a hour or so of poking around, i was ready to face the music and asked "how much?" The young woman in the garage looked at my pile, poked around a bit and gave me a price of 45.00 and that included what ill post in the next round of pictures.

There wasn't much for hand tools except one crescent wrench and one Plomb slotted screwdriver. The rest of the hand tools came from the flea market.

Both hammers are D. Maydole, almost complete Craftsman chisel set in the steel case, new square and round files, Gooddell Pratt brass jewelers hammer, Southbend Lathe wrench, Craftsman dividers/calipers, no-name vise, Keen Kutter auger bit set in the original wooden box, Western Pipe and Steel promo measure tape.

Here is the G.Boley lathe that came from Idi Amin's Estate Company sale. The lady had no idea what it was so we agreed on a price of 20.00

It looks like its in good shape but has minimal tooling. Ill mess with the cord later tonight and try to get it running.

DTM: I used that kit in the Marine Corps it was a P.O.S. supposed to be for plugging tires. We would go to the local auto parts store and buy the regular rope type plugs , which worked great. That kit is missing the reaming and insertion tools but it's a pretty cool find!

that hammer was one of three that were, up until the early '90s, issued to
most outside plant forces[installers,splicers,linemen.].

stepping hammer, claw hammer, riveting [tack] hammer.

if you see a single jack with a vertical peen and hole that's a stepping hammer.

Here is what the 20 bucks or so I had got. I tried not to be a "hoarder" like the wife likes to accuse me of but it was hard not to go back.


A couple of old B&D grinders, the bigger one weighs at least 20lbs-$10 for the pair, movers dolly was free (not sure why this pic is sideways on here it's right side up on the hosting site)

Metal cord reel (might be re-purposed?) and wire, Harris rosebud and adapter (run about $80 new), Rare first year mag 7 C cell maglite , they only made them one year 1979 (I think). These run around $100 on ebay used, and up to $400 in good shape. Tin snips US made, stanley clamps, sears electric staple gun, craftsman drill bits, coil of stranded wire. Old calipers from the 1850s, toggle welding clamps. And I saved a handmade cart that stuff is on, it's all plate steel and angle iron on heavy casters.

Well I didn't get skunked completely for the weekend. it is was a close thing. yesterday was "family obligation day" and then it rained like hell where we were, so even after the obligations were over, it was a complete bust.

Today we went to a block sale, (Nothing for me, a bauble that SWMBO got for my oldest daughter, otherwise, nothing. then on the way to the last planned stop, which was an estate sale but the two non tool items thy wanted those items more than I did based on what they were asking... (only the two were planned) a target of opportunity got me these for $2:

I have a sliver of track just like that, works great as a sheet metal dolly and it's super tough steel. I tried to drill a hole in it to hang it up and it just ate up the drill bit

I also got my compressor pieced together just need to plumb the main line from the compressor to the tank now.

pole hardware that is NOT through bolted, "j"hooks,pole steps,etc.,
have coarse tapered wood threads. you apply them by hammering them
most of the way in, and giving a half turn at the end to make the threads
bite. the hole is to slip over the up turned end and give you leverage to
make that last half turn......or to tie a string to, and throw the hammer through some trees to run a cable?
