I did have a thought in mind though. My work bench is pretty thick and I can clamp things to it when I work on them. And to press in and out the hinge pin on my locomotive bell that I need to restore! So I do have a method to my madness.

I have several "Super Jr." clamps, and one 8" Super, all by Cincinnati.

The large ones can be made to be a U joint press, as long as the bearing cups and/or the yoke is not all buggered up. For that you need a fine thread clamp (which is why they make the clamp type presses that way) I carry one in my 4X4 with a couple of tubing press sleeves I made up clamped into it (so they don't get lost...).

not a garage sale but i just stopped in a pawn shop on my lunch break. i dug through 3 large tool chest for a good 1/2 hour and barley scratched the surface. most of it was junk but there were a few goodies. i cherry picked 5 items and has hoping for a buck a piece but figured theyd charge me maybe 2 each. i asked the man a price. he looked 'em over and said 7 bucks so i was happy.

New to the Garage Journal.

Found this a couple of weeks ago at a local garage sale. $10. A little rusty, but I think it will clean up okay.

So I picked this up over the weekend. for 10 dollars at a sale and I need some help identifying it. it's has a pat date of 1910, the sockets slid into the ratchet and there is a "nut" that screws on the back to hold them in place. they are all different size square sockets. there is no name on it and i'm hoping the collective group can help me figure out who made it.

I picked up one similar to that last year in a box of stuff. I think it was made in the teens.

Here it is, Outlaw. I picked it up last Easter for $25.00 and it's been worth every penny. Its short enough to sit at and use as a work bench and its built heavier than my old Waterloo, a tank. You can see by the interior that it was orig. blue. The last thing on my mind was refinishing it. I mean, good lord, man! Look at the stickers! If I had time I'd show off the other sides. It's even got Richard Petty's Charger on there, so I'm guessing...late 70's??? Someone loved that box.

Standard Post on a 27 pound box was like 25ish bucks from here to Cali. Box I have is 11x11x14 if you want to punch it into USPS from Detroit and get an idea.

Lousy weather and only 4 sales worth going to this morning but they all paid off:

"Little old" 130lb Morgan 60 Vise with huge stand for $75. No cracks, no welds, no abuse and dam near perfect jaws. Dirty but still passes the one finger test:

Family matters and social commitments kept me too busy to flea last weekend.

Did one local garage sale on my way to a party and picked up a big azz Winona Tool Manufacturing Company, Winona, Minnesota 20" x 11" metal carry box along with a #2 C'man clear handle Reed Prince screwdriver.

Box was $2.
I asked the seller a price and at $2 I couldn't get the singles out fast enuff.
Driver was 50 cents.

Google foo turns up nothing on the Winona Tool Company and the screwdriver has a slight bend in the shaft I was hoping to warranty and use but it seems they are NLA. The red strpe handle tells me it's even older than the newer Black stripe handles for reed prince at C'man. Also NLA.

Oh well. Canundrum.

Day off today so a very productive day surprisingly given the season around here now.

Bonney refrig ratchet, Snap-on 3/8 ferret ratchet, S-K flex head wrench, Chrome-X-Quality adjustable pliers, Blue-Point box wrench

Misc Snap-On and Mac hard handle screwdrivers. Tend to find these fairly frequently for truck brands. Probably because the lettering rubs off quite fequently so folks probably don't look close enough to see what they are.

Williams SAE combo wrench set. These are nice in the fact they have a 6 point box end.

Hulbert/Smash-proof products Red-Hed creeper

The Williams wrench sets and creeper came from an older gentlemen who worked in one of the local chemical plants in maintenance. I love those sales that start at 8:00 am and advertise tool because many times they are older retired skill trades guys who are used to getting up way early for work and have many tools !

Finally hidden in the corner of the garage of a former auto repair/gas station owner a Vulcan Tools creeper that needs the headrest redone. Practically nobody around here knows the name Vulcan Tools

My $10 haul this morning.

1.) Craftsman metal box in nice shape, no rust. I bought it hoping to use the tag on my drill press but it wasn't in great shape after I cleaned it.

2.) An assortment of old Plomb 3/4" drive sockets. (And a single P&C.) Plomb could really make a socket, fantastic machining and finishing on them.

3.) Old Mastercraft desk fan. Runs smooth and quiet.

They wanted $20 for the Craftsman organizer full of misc used screws, nuts, etc... I offered $10 for just the organizer, she said deal and she handed me a planter pot to dump the junk in
The rest below came from the pawn shop stop. I scored a Craftsman 1/2" speeder and 7/16" Saltus wrench, both that I have been wanting, along with 4 pair of Channel locks and a pair of Knipex to sell/trade off.

Thanks Guys, it's hammered gray with plastic trays. I may try to duplicate the trays in sheet metal, one is open and three are divided like the one shown. It has the old school blue writing Craftsman logo(which I am coming to love lately) and is roughly 8-3/8" x 5-3/4" x 6-1/4". There are dimples in the top and ******* on the bottom for stacking.

I am digging that Craftsman organizer...............very nice find, like those emblems/logo also.


That saltus wrench is a nice find also. I don't see those too often so I also pick them up when I can.

I got it at an auction full of tacks and screws along with 2 cook books and a book about bridges for 7.50 I sold the books for 50 cents each so I’m into it for 6 bucks. I only had mild interest in it at first and I got it as choice from table because some guy that kept running me up all night showed interest and was waiting to get table choice at 5 dollars. Now it has grown on me and is in my flea market trailer and will be holding some of my hoard.

At the very bottom was the only other good socket- a Snap On 3/8 drive 1" 6 pt short socket FS-321. First snap on tool I have ever bought. Has patent no. 3273430 on it.

Nine4GMC, I have 3 of those parts bins, 2 of the earlier Dunlaps and 1 Craftsman like yours. There is a later Crown version as well.

I am still keeping my eyes open for the Wards version, they were made by same company.
