Re: what did you do in your garage today?

I am usually a bit behind on my posts, so this is actually from last week. Not really garage work but around the house type.

A friend was having a pool dug in so I was able to get a few truck loads of fill dirt. After deciding that a shovel and wheelbarrow just wasn't going to cut it. I lined up a rental Bobcat skid steer to do the work. Well the day before I was going to do the work, I had the opportunity get some asphalt grindings from the road project on my street.

It looks like you put the asphalt right over your grass. Any concerns about that decomposing and becoming uneven quickly or do you think the roller will have sorted that out for you?

rolled my craftsman 190cc push mower into it. Ran out of gas, now wont start. Will have to go through the carb, then also install an inline filter. All small equipment should have one, especially how sensitive the newer carbs seem to be.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Did you replace it with a used battery?

How did the old one fail. No charge or just less MPG/E?

how much was that battery?
I found a used battery from a salvage yard for $800. Dealer wanted $3700 for a new battery plus tax. They claim 8 hours of work. I did it in 3. An online Toyota dealer in TX has one for $2900.

The car showed the red triangle on the dash. OBD code read "exhaust valve solenoid stuck high" (P0080). The dealer, read a few more codes (P3015, P0A80) that pointed to the battery pack.

Here's a nice video that helped a lot:

To be honest, this was a quick project that fell into my lap with no notice or any real plan time. So I guess I'm hoping for the best. I'm hoping that I can get it rolled again come summer time when the temps are a bit warmer and get a better packing. I'm not looking for a long time driveway from this, just something I can maintain for a couple years til my boys are out on their way. So I suppose we'll see how it works out.

Got aggravated trying to make a Cat5e cord, my fingers are too damn fat and the wire is too little.

Filled in the open area of a retaining wall block with some quikrete. I added some tapcons to give the concrete a place to bite.

Search for the Cat5/Cat6 EZ RJ45's. The wire passes all the way through and you crimp and snip.

Makes it a LOT easier.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

I've been working on a couple of old blowtorches (Otto Bernz + Dunlap).
I like old quality stuff. My wife calls it hoarding. I call it collecting.:)
Wyomo

I don't think there are too many people that don't have blowtorches  I have three, plus I have sold a couple and gave a couple away. I did have them all shined up, but over the years they have dulled back down. I guess I do need to polish them again.

Unpacked my kreg k4 and nothing else.

When I bought my Kreg, I had all sorts of plans for it. I've only used it once so far but have had it for two years. :spit:

At least I'll have it for some winter projects.

And as far as what I did in the garage yesterday.....through out some old catalogs, swept the floor from the dog shredding tree limbs, and believe it or not, turned the furnace on for the first time to knock the chill off. It was cool in the garage and for a long while the wind was blowing and dreary out. The neighbor was out with his coat on, the wife put on a heavy hoodie. I said to hell with that and just kicked back with the furnace. Stayed out there until dog training school time!

I started weight training again yesterday, so I do not have time in the week to work in the garage anymore, thus I only unpacked it. I have a whole kitchen to build, so I am pretty sure it will come in handy. I will do a picture frame out of Rhodesian Teak this evening and post some pics in this here fred.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Sat. pulled the transfer case, transmission & engine from my sons rolled Yukon. Seems that we now need that motor for his Tahoe! Sunday pulled the OD transmission from a 92 D150. I'm rebuilding it to go behind a 392 Hemi in a 51 Desoto. Last night, picked up a 97 jeep I bought with a blown motor. Got it to the shop and the guy next door comes over. We have a little BS session. Now he thinks he might want it. Sooooo maybe its gone.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Did a little drywall repair, then I cleaned up a "crapload" of gasoline. I was storing a friends lawn tractor and it looks like it must have a pin hole in the carb float. All of the fuel poured out of the exhaust. What a PITA. Anyone have any suggestions on how to get the smell out??

Now you tell me sheesh ! :spit:

I'm done with it. I was going to make up another shorter cord than I have already made up, maybe 3-5' long for the other side of the garage. I'm taking the crimpers back to the neighbor today.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Actually it was during the weekend. I spent quality time working on the tractor from hell project. In this episode we are setting the ring gap. I needed something quicker and more accurate than a file so I cobbled this little gem together from a bunch of pieces I had been packing around for way too many years. The diamond wheel was a replacement item for a circular saw sharpener from horrible freight. It took me a few hours on the lathe and mill to make the table support. The arbor and the large block of aluminum holding the arbor came from some kind of slotting machine for printed circuit boards that I bought on an auction many many years ago. It actually worked quite well. WD-40 makes a good cutting fluid in this application.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

I sharpened 5 axes, oiled the handles and heads and burnt our scout group name into the handles with a soldering iron. I then dragged the first of two knackered garden tractors that I'm selling on ebay out of the garage so the winning bidder could collect it. It is a little MTD 504 30" cut with a worn out 8HP briggs and stratton that lays down a huge smokescreen when you fire it up. Got £112 for it for the garage fund so a happy man, good to have the space back too. The second one is on ebay at £26 with five days to go so I reckon it'll go for a similar amount, that should pay for the flue for my garage woodburner.

Not today, but on Monday, I hung and wired 2 5000W Fahrenheat heaters in the garage. Tested them out and they work really well. Now just have to wait till it gets a little colder. The only thing left to do is caulk the seams around the OSB boards. I was hoping to prime the walls and ceiling this year, but looks like I'm gonna have to wait till next year.

Finished up this Oil Spill Containment Pan for our Trash Compactor at work, loaded and ready to got the Powder Coaters. Too heavy to ship to the Mistress of Metal.

:D I can relate to that j p! But thank you for thinking of me anyhow.

I started on another pair of HP273 Commando valve covers for an old Barracuda. Though there's a lot of oxidation on the aluminum fins, they were in pretty amazing shape for being nearly 50 years old; the bodywork went quickly, and I even got them coated yesterday morning in the traditional Mopar black wrinkle.

I have a few hours of fin polishing to do today, plastic dip the wire harness retainers and then clear the fins. Here's what I started with ...

There was so much grunge inside they actually caught on fire when I started to outgas them! So out came the propane flame thrower ... God I love that thing! It made quick work of the nastiness and sped up the blasting considerably.

I've restored somewhere between 30 and 40 sets of these things over the years and they always exceed even my own expectations.

Got the from Blain's Farm and Fleet. They have stores in IL, IA and WI. I'm in Michigan. They were the cheapest I found and shipping was only $9.95. I did buy them at different times, but still the cheapest. Shipping was fast less than 2 days from the time I placed the order and received them.

Helped a friend with his TW 250 by adding a battery charger lead, checking all the torques on the bolts, adjusting the chain and adding a GPS mount and wiring. Then stripped and painted my 7 year old HF motorcycle lift in anticipation of shooting a new video!

Jim

PS Met a fellow GJ'r at his motorcycle shop. Didn't even realize he was on here.
