I prefer "fitness model".

It's a two-person job. I usually enlist the neighbour to help me out.

Re: Rick's Double Garage in Calgary, CAN

I've completed a re-do of my 6' storage wall. Here's a little photo-documentary of its evolution:

Soon after we took possession:

IMG_5127 by 55cadillacking, on Flickr

Once I purchased some garden tool storage units, I got a little experimental with my paint design:

IMG_5796 by 55cadillacking, on Flickr

Started to add some useful storage solutions for car detailing products:

IMG_6925 by 55cadillacking, on Flickr

Added a storage bar for spray bottles:

IMG_6964 by 55cadillacking, on Flickr

Continuing to add to the wall:

IMG_7796 by 55cadillacking, on Flickr

Here's where it was as of last week.

IMG_9122 by 55cadillacking, on Flickr

I wanted to repaint the wall and re-mount all the shelving and baskets more precisely. So, here's a run-down of that project:

Removal of all shelving and patching of holes:

IMG_9464 by 55cadillacking, on Flickr

Painted white:

IMG_9470 by 55cadillacking, on Flickr

Glued and nailed 5" runners:

IMG_9472 by 55cadillacking, on Flickr

Complete:

IMG_9473 by 55cadillacking, on Flickr

IMG_9479 by 55cadillacking, on Flickr

Also painted the wall and ceiling above my garage door a darker tone to match the accent colour on my "Kia Wall":

Man, I love this garage!

Wow, very nice. What are you using for a bar to hang those spray bottles?

Re: Rick's Double Garage in Calgary, CAN

That looks great! Seriously, how much time do you spend thinking up these ideas! (jealous!)

Actually, I'm almost at the point where I would consider the paint job complete. The only phase left is the repainting of the ceiling. Not looking forward to that one, but the flat primer is looking grungy. A solid coat of semi-gloss should help lighten the space up a tad.

Door looks great! MAkes the garage look even bigger with the white.

Thanks.

Looks great Rick. BTW just coaxed my uncle to just pick up a Q5 TDI this past week :)

Torquey!

Great job Rick! More inspiration for me. :)

Paint continues to be my favorite way to put my signature on the space. It's relatively cheap but can be quite impactful. I check in on your progress quite regularly.

That looks great!!

Thank you.

My garage door is white already thankfully hahaha. It does help to brighten up the space.

Rick, i'm thinking with the way you are, if your garage door was white originally this would have been an update with you painting it grey lol....

You know me too well.

Nice job on the door Rick.
If you go lighter on the grey above it, that should give you the illusion of more height.
I say give it a try, you can always change it.

I considered going lighter, but my goal is to have only three tones of grey, one white, and the red accent colour. The grey I went with is the lightest of my three chosen shades.

How do you carry your tires to the tire mount that high?? they are very heavy~

I used to get them up and down on my own, but my age is starting to catch up with me. I almost had a horrific accident so I now get a neighbour to lend me a hand.

You've added so many layers of paint, your garage must be about five square feet smaller now

It's true!

I'm in love, haha.

<3

Wow, very nice. What are you using for a bar to hang those spray bottles?

It's a stainless steel towel bar I picked up at Ikea. I wrapped it with electrical conduit and added 3/4" spacers so the spray triggers don't touch the wall while hanging.

Rick you stole my idea with the runners, ha. I am planning on doing that on a side wall in the next couple of weeks. And you sir have a problem! You cannot leave well alone ;) But it is always nice to see the changes, because even when you look at it and say it couldn't look better..... you one up yourself. Bravo

Where is your sidekick?

Yeah, I find it hard to leave well enough alone. My sidekick is pretty much at my side 24/7. He's busy "fixing" his police car with his tools.

Had a chance to finally seal my driveway. Saved myself $400 in labour by going the DIY route. I used a 10mil roller this time round. Turned out quite nice.

Somewhat garage related; I received my 20" winter wheels for the SQ5 that should arrive in a few months.

image-2 by 55cadillacking, on Flickr

Next step is to order the winter tires. I'm glad Audi made TPMS an option (which I declined) so doing winter/summer swaps will be much cheaper and easier! I hate those ****** things.

Ok, the updates you did to the garage look great as usual. I've finally learned, when I think your garage can't get any better, you make it look better. Now I know. :)

BTW, NICE "winter" wheels.

Forecasters are calling for 5-10 cm of snow tonight, so I did my winter wheel swap. The new rubber mat I picked up in the Spring was perfect! Nary a dent in the rubber, and the Free Flow underneath was impacted in no way whatsoever.

BTW, NICE "winter" wheels.

I just can't stand the look of those black steel rims a lot of people go with. If our climate demands a dedicated set of winter tires, you may as well embrace it and invest in a nice set of wheels. That's my two cents, at least.

Thanks, that's good to know. I'll have to pick up one of those mats.

NC, the protective mat made life so much easier. The 1/2" thickness of the mat, combined with the fact my Kia has a 1" drop had me nervous that the jack wouldn't fit, but luckily it did. Not having to pop a section out each time and move the car around to line up with the section saved me all kinds of time and frustration. I also had a chance to use my 1/2" pneumatic impact and it made my garage sound like a genuine tire shop. I'm sure the neighbours were swimming in jealousy!

There's been many people asking about using a floor jack/jack stands on a Free Flow RaceDeck floor, and I am very confident in saying THIS IS THE ANSWER:

Hi Rick, what product did you use to seal your driveway with. I have an exposed aggregate driveway too and need to do mine next year after the snow melts...

Assuming you are in Alberta, you can pick up a big bucket of this stuff at Northland Construction. They have 5 locations in Alberta. If you aren't in Alberta, I'm sure there's other industrial construction retailers that sell a similar product. It is called "North High Gloss" and it is what the pro's use. This 18.9 liter bucket ran me $135 + GST. Another GJ member, (garagemahalpharoh) applied it with a chemical sprayer and reported excellent results. I went with the paint roller approach and am similarly pleased with the results I achieved. Honestly, it was one of, if not the, most fun DIY projects I've ever taken on. It felt so good to lay a visible coat of sealer down on my driveway knowing the chemical attack it will soon endure thanks to the **** the city uses to de-ice our roads.

Best of luck!

Wow, a member since 2009 and I get the honour of being your first thread to post on? That actually means a lot!

Thanks for rendering those images. I think I prefer the current stain more than the ones posted, but I would be interested in seeing how a more "espresso" brown colour looked. I recently witnessed a neighbour with a similar door (but in a much darker stain) go through the pain of re-staining. He spent the better part of a weekend sanding the current coat off and his new coat seems to have bonded with the wood a lot more. His garage door faces South so he gets the sun all day long. The intense UV rays really put a beating on these wooden doors. Since mine faces North, it never gets hit with direct sunlight so it is weathering much better.

Thanks for your interest in my garage and maybe you won't be such a "lurker" now that you got that first post out of the way!

How do you carry your tires to the tire mount that high?? they are very heavy~

I was able to handle my 18" winters, and 19" summers all on my own. It's when you start dealing with 20"+ SUV wheels that you need an extra hand.

I will hopefully have my own garage to show off here in the next few months when I buy my first home.

Nice winter wheels, those are quality rep wheels.

Gotta love Calgary weather, last week you had a couple crazy nice days, and then a few days later smacked with a bunch of snow.

Keep your snow over there Rick!!! I'm not ready!!

It was a nice little preview of what winter holds in store. Luckily, we are getting back to more seasonal temps, just in time for Trick or Treating!

Really impressive attention to detail, you have set the bar high--and continue to raise it! It's going to take me quite some time to get to anywhere near that level of finish.

Do you miss your STS-V? I've driven a couple, really impressive cars, especially the power train refinement and they really go! I like the Kia design language a lot these days, their design chief used to be the lead designer for Alfa Romeo.

Re: Rick's Double Garage in Calgary, CAN

I do miss the hell out of my STS-V, but it was just impractical for many reasons. Long winters being the most significant reason. I have really fallen in love with Quattro AWD so any of the new V's will have to be admired from afar. The Kia was a relative bargain and really cheap to drive and maintain. I'll be selling it when our new car arrives in a few months. They pinched designer Peter Schreyer from Audi actually. His big claim to fame was the TT. Thanks for noticing the details in my space. They are the most fun part for me. I have plans of changing my front wall up with some additional storage and tile. I'll get a good jump on that over the holidays.

Re: Rick's Double Garage in Calgary, CAN

That's right on Schreyer, I had him confused with Frank Stephenson. That would explain why the new Forte and Rio remind me of the SEATs so much (we see some here in Texas with Mexican plates).

Ironically I bought my V-Wagon as a practical car--my wife complained about the impracticality of my M6 (no rear seat legroom) so I came home with a station wagon. Rocket powered, but a wagon. She was/is not amused. It does go thru gas like Charlie Sheen goes thru booze and hookers though....

Man, you got me feeling all nostalgic now! I picked her up in '08 from a dealer in Parma, Ohio and drove it home with a buddy of mine. It had 20K miles on it and I sold it 2 years later with 30K for what I paid. I sunk a bit of dough in it, but it was an absolutely amazing car. I took a CTS-V for a spin when the 2nd generation was released. It kind of ruined the STS-V for me, though. The neck-snapping grunt of the 556 bhp made the subtle 469 bhp of the STS seem too sedate so that marked the end. Plus, I wasn't willing to subject it to the harsh elements of an Alberta winter so she sat for 8+ months a year. But, gawd was she pretty:

This car had the Tango Red interior treatment. Photos make it brighter than it actually was. I really liked it.

I put the Borla/GM Performance exhaust on it:

I drove a 77 CDV in High School. I'll have to dig up a photo. The 928S4 was my all-time dream car growing up. I still have all the brochures I got from writing Porsche Canada. We obviously have very similar taste in cars.

Obviously you are a man of discerning taste! My 77 CDV is Bimini Beige with a Dark Saffron top and interior, it was the car my grandmother kept in Florida. It will be used to intimidate boys when my daughter starts dating--I'll put a shovel, a tarp and a bag of lime in the trunk.

Wow Rick  just went through all 40 pages and the transformation is amazing. What a gorgeous garage! Great vision and ideas for using stuff in different ways than it was purposed for (all the ikea stuff!). I can't wait to use some of your ideas to help relieve some clutter in my own garage. Couple questions....the ikea shelves, any worry about holding the jack stands on them? Are the really sturdy enough for that?? Also, the baskets you've had from the beginning that have been moved around, I don't think you mentioned where they were from. Love that idea rather than having extra cabinets. Great job with everything

Re: Rick's Double Garage in Calgary, CAN

Thanks for the props, Macho Man. I appreciate the time it must have taken you to wade through the history of my double garage. It is in a constant state of evolution, but it does actually put a grin on my face when I see where it is now and where it started. To think, I thought a coat of white paint and a heater was where it would all end. Had I not discovered the Garage Journal, perhaps it would have ended there, but alas...

The "Swedish Gladiator" (aka Ikea) shelves have performed very well in my garage. For a pre-fab shelf, it actually shoulders quite a load. It is very dependent on what mounting hardware you use. For the 12" shelf that stores my jack stands, I made sure I found studs and I used 1-1/2" screws so I'm very confident in their strength. I'd be hesitant to really load it up, but for what I need, they have been great performers. And, relatively cheap! Plus, I found no real other options when I was on the hunt.

The baskets have been moved all around the garage, and I absolutely love them. I ordered them from a garage storage solution company in the US, but the name escapes me. At the time, I was happy with the price I paid, but then FEDEX hit me with a massive brokerage fee. I was ticked. In the end, I paid way too much for them, but at least I have never been disappointed with them. I can't say they are any better than what you can find at the big box stores, but I do enjoy the flexibility a wire basket provides.

These Gladiator ones would surely fit the bill:

http://www.gladiatorgarageworks.com/products-1/hooks,-baskets-&-bins-2/hooks,-baskets-&-bins-3/-[GAWU18BKBH]-1700387/GAWU18BKBH/

Thanks for checking in. Good luck with your clutter and let me know if you have any other questions.

Re: Rick's Double Garage in Calgary, CAN

So, I was very impressed with myself for doing my own driveway sealing, but it would appear I didn't actually save the money I thought I had. Went to the mailbox today and received two photo radar speeding tickets equalling my $ savings. Hit one on the way to pick the sealer and one on the way home! See what happens when I try to save a buck, Dubber?

Found an old pic of the Caddy and Lincoln I rocked in my late-teens. While my buddies were going "Goo Goo" over Preludes, Celicas, and Civics, I was rocking the American luxo-boats! Wouldn't change it for a minute...

It didn't end well for the pool old bird...not quite the best car to tackle Canadian winter driving with a 18-year-old at the helm.

That was a great car. I find it amazing that the turbo 4-cyl in my Kia has almost double the bhp of this 5.0L V8. (273 > 140)
