Re: what did you do in your garage today?

We were back working on my friend's V8 Miata project yesterday.

After getting the engine, transmission, and front subframe all married, we used the base of an engine stand along with a pair of 4x4's to make a rolling cradle for the drivetrain. This made it easier to position the engine so we could lower the body down onto the subframe. It worked like champ! This is the part where having a lift really doesn't ****. Putting an engine in from the bottom is waaaaaaay easier than from the top.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Got tired of the hot water tank and furnace being in a very vulnerable and exposed location in the garage. Pipes were hanging from the ceiling and out from the wall where I was bumping into them going in and out of the man door to the house. I was paranoid about taking them out if I was moving anything larger through that door so decided to frame it in for protection. But then since it's framed, that could provide more wall space for storage, and ideally for brooms.

I checked the furnace and hot water tank- they vent all gasses through the chimneys to the roof. The units are rated to be installed inside interior closets if the fresh air intake is pulled from the outside. In this case, it was already in the garage and not in living space, so as long as I provided enough air intake for the burners, then it's fine. I checked for clearances and made them a bit larger than what was called for. The furnace is meant to vent right through a door if needed and I like the idea so I did that.

I did consider service so I put in a pair of doors for full access and even replacement of either item. If more access is needed, everything is assembled with screws and bolts so I can disassemble it if needed.

Already, I like having the brooms up on the wall and not getting caught up underfoot. Total cost was about $150 in lumber, hardware, etc.

I don't think "moving" your garage qualifies as working "in" your garage. That looks like a big job. Do you have a thread on it ... or can you start one? It looks fascinating.

No thread on it. It's my brothers garage that was on the property when he bought it with a totally shot foundation and he's not really into the whole forum thing. The slab was cracked all the way around and the 3 course of block were leaning out a considerable amount. We talked about moving it ourselves using the pictured excavator trailer, but after finding out it was only $2200 to have the professionals pick it up, slide it 20ft south, and then come reset it when the new slab/ ICFs were put in, it was a no Brainer to have them move it. Hopefully we can pour next weekend.

I moved houses for 6 years. It's a lot of work, but the payoff is great.

I believe any house is mobile:lol_hitti

I was actually amazed at how little bracing was needed. Had we gone through with moving it ourselves we would have braced if to an extreme overkill apparently.

got 2 pieces of steel plate from scrap yard to make a mount for a radius turning tool i got about a year ago. tool holes wouldent match up with the cross feed mounting holes so i drilled and tapped the top plate to mount the tool. then i drilled bottom plate to mount where the compound rest usually goes, then i welded the two together. believe it or not the cutting tip of the tool lined up perfect with the dead center in the tail stock. im reall happy with that View attachment 290486View attachment 290487 dont look pretty, but its gonna do the job

Picked up a free mini ATV. Turned out to be a pretty cool start to a project that I have been excited to start. I bought a radio flyer wagon last month to haul stuff at a swap meet, it needs some work but equally important it needs some personality.

So far I'm working on transplanting the front suspension and tie rods which need some modifications to increar the track width but overall the time saved using the ATV spindles and hubs is worth it. In the rear I'm going to add axle bearings to the wagon and keep the stock ATV hubs.

My first post. Love this site. Spending too much time reading the forum to post much at the moment, but plan on posting some pics of my new garage soon.

Anyway, this picture made me laugh. The bench is super cool, but what the hell is the large wooden **** doing on the bench, lol?

Got about 5 minutes in the garage before my wife and son got back from grocery shopping. Managed to continue breaking down the Delta 1x30 sander to get it cleaned up and ready for metalwork. It is filled with sawdust and had a bad knock when running but I believe it is just that the drive wheel set screw was loose. hopefully I'll get it back together tonight.

^The man has a valid question.

^ with what looks to be a spider on the tip.

It's not a spider, it's a skeeter!

MM :lol_hitti

It could be a fly and he pulled the wings off so the fly will "walk him off"

Just out of curiosity, why are you running a dead center in your tailstock? I'm assuming that you are talking about a metal lathe, correct?

Normally you run a dead center in the headstock along with a faceplate and a lathe dog, and run the live center in the tailstock.

Anyways, just curious.

Last night I performed a roof inspection on our coach and touched up a couple of areas where the Dicor sealant was starting to crack. She is almost ready for her winter slumber.

I did nothing in my garage today...sit by the fire tonight, drinking a beer and looked at it. Thinking I have a lot of insulation to hang.

I'm thinking of starting a thread about the bench since there have been a number of questions in various threads and in Private Messages.

Fussed with the Passenger Rear window regulator on my daughters car (2000 Buick Century).

That was before I realized the repair parts were $30.00. No more fussing - swap it out and be done . . . .

I tried the same on a 2000 VW PAssat a few years ago and gave up - I never figured out how to even see the mechanism . . .

Cheers

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Started building a 2' x 3' x 24" high all steel work/welding table so I don't have to stand all day working on parts. I used a 3/8" steel plate for the top. I found the top at a neighborhood yard sale a couple of months ago, and couldn't resist the $2.00 price tag.

Found a small clapping vice for light work and will drill and tap holes for a 3" vice for the heavier stuff. Dang, I love having an old desk chair to work from and a solid surface to work on.

It wasn't today, but actually yesterday.
I fired up the lathe, and made a tiny brass "fly reel" to go with the tiny bamboo fly rod I made for my bobblehead likeness.
I couldn't just leave him holding a stinking spinning rod, now could I?

That is awesome. What is the OD for size reference? What was your setup for drilling the holes, rotab?

I turned it down from a piece of 3/8" brass rod. Final O.D. is right about .350"
The holes were free-handed with the "reel" on it's side in a drill press vise.

Went to home depot to get outlet covers for my 3 phase outlets. They didn't have the right size so I decided to fire up my little desktop CNC and enlarge a dozen covers. :drink:

Since it was 81 degrees -- not bad for the end of October -- and was probably going to be my last chance for awhile, I thoroughly washed out the shop and did some seasonal maintenance while the concrete dried. Even after all that it was still pretty early for me so I got a few hours of blasting in on the next job in line, another Mopar Performance dress up package. Sorry no Powder **** today ... these are going to be Hemi Orange and wrinkle black.
