My nephew is 12 and doesn't have his own set of tools. I figured I'd change that at Christmas. He rides dirtbikes, and his dad has a shop full of tools, but none that my nephew can call his own. I remember getting my first set of real tools when I was young and feeling like I became a man. I didn't get near the setup he's getting, but it taught me a lot about respecting what's yours and how to work with your hands.

I'm still adding stuff, but this is what I dug out of my tool chests that I don't use anymore. The ratcheting wrenches are SAE so I'm going to get him a set of metric on black Friday. Also going to buy him the 10pc Husky t-handle hex wrenches from HD. Gotta round out the sockets as well, I'll probably use a 25% off coupon at harbor freight for that.

What do you guys think? I'm hoping he enjoys them, I know I would have.

That is a very nice start. I remember the proud feeling when I got tools I could call my own.

You have a great heart. You may want to get an ok for the gift from the Dad as you don't want to be stepping on his toes.

The 1/4 drive socket modules are going to be $10 on black Friday at Sears. Might be an easy gift for another family member to add!!

Excellent job on making that young man become a better person! He will remember you years later that's for sure!

I'll look into those too! I'm just trying to gather as much of anything and everything for him.

I hooked my nephew up with a set of tools when he was that age. I inherited my dad's and already had more and better stuff. He's quite mechanically inclined, into fixing his car and things around the house for his mom. I ****** up deals throughout the year and expand his set at Christmas. We're going to restore the old Snap-on roller I gave him last spring, as he needs the extra space. I get his vintage 3 drawer Craftsman to use for big wrenches and seldom used items at my place.

I think I'll get myself a snap on box before I worry about him :lol_hitti

I miss the days of getting tools from my grandpa for christmas and birthdays, sometimes just a surprise when i would visit him when i was 14+ He built up most of my collection with all craftsman. That looks like a great start you are giving him!
Before I got a toolbox, all of my tools were in a rubbermaid tote!

I'm doing something similar for my 10 year old nephew - with his Dad's blessing.

I'm good on SAE stuff - never came across any Metric Stuff at sales . . .

No roller - just a carry box. If I came across a roller priced CHEAP he'd have a roller :dunno:

That's a good idea. I may have to do that

heck with $10 at HF he can get several things or at least a set of things of some kind. SO while I like them you would be very limited on getting much with them with $10 but that one thing that he might be able to get there would be the coolest tool he had...Heck if I was that age I would have been excited to have one of those free snap on pocket screw drivers that the drivers hand out.

In any case you are one awesome uncle and starting him off on a good track with that set up so far. Heck every year from now on you could add to it and by the time he is an adult he would be all set.

My uncle bought me my first tools when I got my first car. I used them a lot growing up. I still have the sockets in the house for inside projects, but the 3/8" ratchet just plain wore out. He's been gone for 25 years.
