How did you let them cut out all of the webbing in the I Joists to run the HVAC flex? Those joists are effectively non existent now :shocking:

From talking to the joist manufacture this is acceptable. As long as the joist does not have a point load above it

I would highly suggest revisiting that and getting it in writing. Point load or not that floor has a designed live load. Even at a 40psf rating that floor would fail.

Take a look at GP's site:

http://www.buildgp.com/DocumentViewer.aspx?repository=BP&elementid=11562

Assuming that's a 8" round hole for the ductwork and the i joists are 11-7/8, and best case scenario it is only a 12' span, those holes can be no closer than 54" from the end they are hung from the LVL from. A hole bigger then 8-5/8" isn't permitted anywhere. Just something to take a look at before closing up the walls. Best of luck.

Thanks for the in site. Originally the ducts were on the other side of the room but the builder wanted them along the 25x8ft window to help with air circulation near the window

Jakkle-
thanks for that document. The joists are 14", and I bet that hole is CLOSE to the minimum recommended distance. I may talk to my framer about reinforcing the i beam the same way they recommend for cantilevers. If i get done with my structured wiring early, I might just brace them myself.

Cody-
I decided to go with the smaller airline, and run a full "loop" effectively making it 2X the cross section. The smaller airline will be a lot easier to route through the walls, etc.

I have a good structural engineer if you want his number. We are having him do a inspection on our framing once it is completed. He might be able to give you some peace of mind. After dealing with an unexpected structural issue in our old house, I'm not taking any chances with our new house.

JSHerid1-
Send over the info. Not sure I can afford too much more "$500 here, $500 there" stuff.. ( i am about $150K into those) but I would be interested in at least seeing what he would charge.

Thanks!

If your contractor really compromised the floor a structural engineer is a great investment. I had to pay big $$ as a result of the builder of my old house not putting a beam in where one was needed--the builder was a high end custom builder who cut a corner to save a little money.

Isn't the purpose of the inner web on an I-Beam simply to keep the top and bottom flanges separate ? With the strength coming from the upper and lower flange in either compression or extension ?

This being the case then placement of a round hole would have minimal effect on the strength unless the force applied was as a point load directly over the arc of the cut circle. If the force is spread as it is with a joist (all be it and interesting joist which may even be a bearer) with a sub floor on top acting as even more flange getting a point load would be almost impossible. Add to that internal walls, bottom plates etc and I would be surprised if it is an issue.

i could be wrong but, i thought the flanges were basically 2X3's and the webbing (plywood on edge) provided most of the strength and rigidity.

Nope ... web holds flanges apart and they live in compression and extension. As long as they stay apart they are happy.

Barn- basically yes. I agree, all of the recommend ed hole charts are conservative because the manufacture doesn't know what you will stack on top of it. Point loads etc. I am also using 1.125" decking which helps. But I am going to have it looked at to be sure

If concerned I would just add thickness to the web on either sides of the hole to reduce their ability to push the web together, but seriously in a residential application unless it is directly under some truss load etc I would think it is well over engineered.

Ordered my double sliding 16ft wide patio door for my master balcony, and 100+ sqft of 1" thick lowE glazing for the rest of the floor to ceiling windows.

Hoping to have it in <10 days. I am at a stand still :(

Window guy didnt give me glazing measurements until yesterday, so I moved as fast as I could.

City spent 2 months trying to find my water meter. They finally gave up and gave us a new one. I think it was buried years ago when they widened the street.

Storefront glass is about 10% done. 1" insulated glass panels. Largest is roughly 8ftx8ft

Lets just say this was back in the days of the NA SR 396 then the Turbo setup you had (which gave me the real inspiration to do a turbo setup on my LT1). Heck, I still have the GMHTP with your car in it.

Sweet progress, if I ever build a house I'd be the worst customer because that "pro" wiring would have to be cleaned up for my liking.

Still waiting on window installer, but started fabricating the stairs in my garage.

Lower level done except hand rails. It is going to **** to move to the powder coaters, then the site (2000lbs between the two levels)

Windows are supposed to start today. Probably into 4 weeks of delay not realistically. Looking forward to the rough in inspection so this thing can REALLY start moving.

Railing started. I love the look of the .250 rods, but I will have to stay on my guests not to use them to put their foot on.. they will bend!

The idea is all welds are hidden from the top, so things kinda key together so I can weld on the backside.

RapidAir is awesome. Went together SO easily. Took less than an hour to run 4 drops and 2 lines to reels. However the blue dye they use could use some work..
