About 4 years ago I started building my new shop on some property I plan to retire on in a few years. Due to work, work, work, work, work, work, well you get the idea, I never got around to finishing it. I got laid off a couple weeks ago and plan to take some time off before I go back to work and work on my shop. I thought I would start this thread for anyone that cared to follow along with this build. I must warn you though. I'm not particularly good at building buildings. I know very little about it but I can fumble thru it so it will be a slow go. Lucky for me I have two brothers and several good friends that are very good at it to guide me and help along the way.

One other thing I would like to add is I plan on doing this as cheaply as possible for a couple of reasons. One, I am a cheap bastidge. LOL. Two all the funding is coming out of a fund my wife and I have saved up to build our retirement home in a couple years and i don't want to delay that project any more than necessary. Lucky for me I have a very understanding wife that agree's finish this project before starting another.

So, now on to some pics to get the ball rolling. This is what I have to start with. Basically it's a 30 x 50 x 12' shell pole barn with a 12' leanto with all concrete work done. Nothing on the inside is complete at this time.

Thanks. Unfortunately the inside is a disaster area right now. For the last four years it's been a catch all do to working 6 or 7 days a week 12 hours plus a day. I just run in throw **** out of the truck and leave. Hopefully I can remedy all that and get it finished out, cleaned up and organized.

Thanks for the well wishes. Actually, I had to do a little arm twisting to get laid off. I'm a pipeliner and for the last few years we have been extremely busy. It's not uncommon to change jobs and company's a couple times a year but for the last few years it's go from one job straight to the next. I just finished a nine month job in Ohio. I only went up there for a three month job and it took me nine months to get away. LOL.

Well, didn't make much progress on the shop today. One of the problems with being gone for months at a time is you get behind on everything. I did finish up a project my bud and I started last spring but I had to go to work before it was finished. We built a wood stove and started installing it. I finished the install and welded up the stove pipe. Will trim it all out when the inside walls go in.

My brother picked up the studs for the walls for me and dropped em off. Hopefully tomorrow we get some framing done.

Didn't get much done to the shop yesterday due to the flooding we got and too many other things to do. I did get a few studs threw up. That's some progress I guess. LOL.

My problem is I have nowhere to move that stuff out to and I really don't want any of it sitting out in the weather. I covered the boat and moved it down to the barn along with the two tractors that were in there. Moved the lawn mower out under the lean to cause the barn has no more room. I pull the four wheeler out while we work. That opened it up enough we can shuffle stuff around while working.

Nah, not a welder. I did that for a couple years back in the early 80's and decided it wasn't for me. I like to call myself and equipment operator but for the last few years I've been an Inspector. Basically I sit in my truck and observe what everyone else is doing. LOL.

I have owned that property for quite a few years. I spend just about all my free time down there and it's usually well after dark when I leave. It's 8 miles from where I live now. Most days my wife comes down and we cook on the grill and use the kitchen in my travel trailer so we are not cooking supper at 10 oclock at night when we get home. I ran across that kitchen set that was in a mother in law apartment and picked it up for a couple hundred bucks. It just made sense to put it in the shop. It's all like brand new. Metal cabinets and a small stove. Can't wait to get it all finished.

Didn't get anything done to the shop today. I did manage to run into Lowes and grab a few things I needed while I was in town though. Progress is going to be slow this week due to the holidays plus I'm starting an OSHA class in the morning that I need for work. When I get all that out of the way I plan on making the shop priority.

Haven't had much time lately to get things done at the shop. Now that all the holidays are out of the way hopefully things will pick up some.

We did manage to get some wiring done, some insulation placed and a few sheets of sheetrock up.

And the view of the disaster area from the scaffold. Tomorrows efforts are going to be moving more of that **** down to the barn and making some more room. Didn't take long to run out of room once construction started.

We are making a little progress, albeit slowly. We finished hanging the sheetrock on the sections of wall we have framed up. Finished up the wireing in that section. The next section is even going to be slower as we have a door, some windows and stove pipe to cut in.

After we did that we decided to do a little cleaning and organizing to make more room. We stacked a lot of stuff against the wall we had done.

We have floor!! Where did that come from?

It's pretty cool here for Arkansas. It was 20 degree's with wind gust of 30 yesterday evening while we were working on it. Kind of cool in a building with little insulation and no ceiling in it yet. We just made sure we kept Sasquatch (wood stove) well fed. Wasn't bad to work in there at all.

Been making a little progress slowly but surely. Been getting a lot of little things done that eat a lot of time like wiring, grouting the boards around the edge of the walls where they meet the concrete, putting up the cardboard around the top to stop the blown in insulation from blocking the soffet vents.

Stopped by the lumber yard to get some stuff and they had garage door insulation panels on sale for .50 each. They didn't have any the right size so I am having to cut them to fit. Not the best solution but I'm happy with the results. Got the door done.

Got a window cut in and framed out today. Plan on putting in another window and a walk door tomorrow.

Been getting a little done on the shop. Don't seem like much because of the way we are doing it. There is so much stuff to move around we just started on one wall and are working our way around. Doing everything but finish work as we go to keep from moving things more than we have to. Framing, electrical, insulation, grouting, sheetrock and cutting in windows and doors. Seems like it takes forever to get a wall done.

Got the walk thru door in the back wall cut in.

Trimmed out on the outside.

We pulled the ridge cap off and replaced it with a vented one.

Finally got most of that wall insulated. We still have a window to install on the far end but it's been too cold and windy for us to cut a hole that big in the wall. Supposed to be decent tomorrow so the plan is to get it done.

Even got some more sheetrock up.

It was real hard to concentrate on working with the smell of this simmering on the wood stove all day.

Hopefully I'll have some more progress to report tomorrow.

What does the smaller upper chamber do for that set-up? Looks like a heck of a heat source. Enjoying your build...thanks for sharing.

It's just a heat reclaimer of sorts. It gets pretty hot. We put it there for a couple of reasons. Main one is to keep the stove pipe from getting too hot where it exits the wall. Where the pipe goes thru the wall now runs about 250 degree's most of the time where as without that reclaimer on it it would be running 500 plus. I just felt like it added safety to using a wood stove. However with metal siding outside, metal studs in the wall with 6" fiberglass batts and 2 layers of 5/8" firerated sheetrock on the inside, I couldn't burn the wall if I wanted to.

The other reason for it is someday when I have time to mess with it more I may drill some holes in the 6" pipes that support it. This will allow air to mix with the exhaust gasses and cause them to burn once the stove is at operating temps. This would allow more heat with less wood, less smoke and much improved efficientcy. I may never get around to that though.

Also with that chamber, it will catch some of the smoke and creosote that is produced. Some of the smoke may be captured enough so you don't have as much going to the outside.

Other than that, it's looking good, and looking to more updates as you get along.

Dang Kevin, you're a pretty fart smeller.. err uh I mean smart feller. I had planned on adding a door to the end of it so I could clean it out but it never occurred to me to combine it with a damper for air. I will do that when I get to that project. Thanks.

I was staying just east of Canton in Minerva. The work was south of there in Scio. I did notice there are a lot of members in the area and I would of loved to hook up with some of them. Didn't work out though as they tried to work us to death. Barely had time to get groceries and wash clothes. I did have my bike up there with me but only got to ride it a couple times. I took off a day when my wife was up and we rode around the country side some. Very pretty area. Some of the old farm homesteads are simply stunning. I love those old barns and was fortunate enough to be able to tour some of them. Super friendly people that were always happy to drop what they were doing and give us a tour and chat a hour or so when we would stop.

There is a chance I will be back in the area when I return to work. I've had some calls from several contractors in the area for whenever I'm ready to return to work. The one that interest me most right now is just north of Cambridge. So who knows. If I do I will definitely take you up on the offer of a cold beer.

Howdy neighbor. I do get up in that area once in a while. Usually when I'm out riding around on my bike. The last few years work has kept me hooked up pretty short so my bike riding has been almost zero. Would love to see your shop.

Reeves is only a mile up the road from me. That's where I get all my steel too. Next time your coming this way let me know and I'll give you a tour of my place and maybe get some lunch at the Market Café.

Got a few more things done yesterday. I got tired of tripping over this old light so I decided to put it up on the back wall outside to light up the back if ever needed. It's not the best light in the world but it works, was free and will rarely be used. It did however draw first blood on the shop build. I was up on a scaffold trying to hold it in place and run a 3 inch wood screw into the post all by myself. I was using my 3/8 air powered butterfly impact to drive the screw with a torx bit on it. Of course it slipped off and ran the bit 1/2 inch into my palm while spinning at a high rpm. OUCH! My wife came to my rescue with some peroxide, antibiotic cream and a duct tape band aid. Did you know they actually make duct tape band aids? Cool. She thinks I will live. It did slow my progress for the rest of the day.

Got the other window installed, trimmed out on the outside and the first layer of sheetrock finished out on that wall.

Did a quick tape and mud job around the outlet boxes and stove pipe to seal them before the second layer of sheetrock goes on.

Thanks for the compliment. Yeah I have a 2 speed squirrel cage blower out of an old central gas furnace that goes on it. I have it removed right now so we could have more working room to frame and hang sheetrock. When it' installed it works great. Blows some very hot air and lots of it. I don't know how hot that pipe gets as my IR thermometer maxes out at 550 degrees and it stays maxed all the time the stove is running. When it's really cold and we have the fire really cranked up that pipe turns a dull cherry red. I'll grab a pic of it next time we have it that hot.

Well my buddy that is helping me with this project had other things to do today so I thought I would get some electrical work done. I opened the garage door and took one look and thought what a mess. So I decided to do some cleaning and organizing to give us more working room. I got quite a bit cleaned when it came time to move my bike. I thought hmm... it's a nice day for January I'll just run it up to the house and put it in the garage up there to get it out of our way. Somehow a 8 mile ride turned into a 250 mile ride. Not sure how that happened. Some days are like that I guess. LOL.

Thanks. Well, since one of my best bud's shop burned to the ground about 3 years ago I decided I wanted mine as fireproof as possible. A lot of my projects involve cutting and welding. Plus I got 100 new sheets of 4x10x5/8 firerated sheetrock free and it only takes 40 sheets for one layer. So, might as well have a 2 hour fire rated building right?

It's been a few days and I kinda got sidetracked on this project. My F250 laid down on me and after messing with it for a couple days I ended up just taking it to a shop to be fixed about 50 miles away. Also I've been planning on upgrading my travel trailer and had been looking at one I found online. While I was dropping the truck off I thought I would make a side trip and check out the trailer. Ended up blowing another day with that.

Finally got the second layer of sheetrock on the west wall so that wall is done except for finish work. It was pretty cold yesterday so I tried to stay as busy as I could and stay as close to the stove as I could so started some mud work. LOL.

My grandson stopped by after school and wanted to try his hand at mudding so I told him to have at it.

The chief of security wanted to ride along with me and check out the progress.

He wasn't very much help though he did make sure no one stole the wood stove. LOL

Today we got the north wall framed out and the wiring roughed in. I had a bunch of foam insulation panels left over from the garage door insulation job so I decided to get them out of our way. We stuck them between the outside girts on the north wall before we hung the 6" batts.

Great progress. I really like the glass man door. One of those would match my glass garage door. Everything is coming along nicely
