Re: 60x100x18 - My dream coming true in the PNW.

I priced the shop both ways, I did stick frame last time and I am building it larger and nicer this time for less money. I also will have it better insulated and better construction. The timbers are 8ft in the ground with 7 ft of concrete holding them.:D

What are the dimensions of your timbers "pole" that are concreted in?

The last 16' of building is a gravel carport of sorts; is that part-of or in-addition-to the 100' length?

You priced the shop both ways - Pole and Stick; do you have your cost comparison / sheets available, either publicly or privately?

Do you have any drawings or artists rendition of the final product?

I live in Knoxville, TN and just secured approved financing for a 12-acre parcel I have had my eye on for over 2 years. The land wasn't for sale and has a dilapidated 1100 sq ft house built in 1941 and I just knew it would never go up for sale. Wrong! It did! It went up for sale 3 weeks before Christmas and I didn't even know that until 2 weeks after. Well I scrambled and got a bid in on it but there was already an accepted offer the sellers were committed to. Well that deal fell through and I was #2 and I got it! Well now I am scrambling trying to figure out what the heck to do with regard to buildings; house, shop, garage - build now, sell current house now, etc! It's just happening way too fast and there is no time to think - just react and plan fast.

With the same size shop as yours, I could do the same as you and live in the shop while I build my house on the property.

There is no doubt I want/need a big shop and I think you have just provided me the template with what I am looking for. I like the size of your shop and all that you've describe so far - and I can mostly envision your building with the photos you have posted.

Again, anything and everything you can provide me I would greatly appreciate.

Thanks,
Ron

Re: 60x100x18 - My dream coming true in the PNW.

I have seen a few garages on here that do a loft instead of attic truss. I suspect it is more affordable to do this, allowing for more of a spread on the trusses.

Is cost the reason you do the loft, or? Not to hijack, but if anyone has done this I wouldn't mind seeing how they worked out for you.

Cool garage, wish I had that kind of space, wow. What are you doing for heat? (I only skimmed, if I missed it I apologize).

Actually scissor trusses were about a $1000 more expensive, but we wanted the height in the loft and the shop for future projects.

We are doing radiant floor heat with a central boiler wood fired boiler.

You can never have to much space for hotrods! Very nice build.

Yes sir,my 60 coupe deville will be getting some much needed love once the shop is done. Nice model a, what part of Oregon are you in?

Re: 60x100x18 - My dream coming true in the PNW.

I'm about two hours north of you. We are looking at some property and I got the wife talked into the same plan of building the shop first. We were considering putting a small, in-laws, apartment in it and then building the house but same concept.

You are getting soooooo lucky with the weather!

Shoot me a pm, you are welcome to bring the wife down and do a visual show and tell to help her see what it looks like in real measurements.

MSD Shop

The guy asked about attic trusses which would have given you a room upstairs the entire 100' length probably around 16' wide with a 8' ceiling. I have these type trusses in our 34x36 house garage. I would hate to guess what it would cost for attic trusses for a 60x100 building. Maybe another $5000 ?? It would an awesome room to have up there though.

Re: 60x100x18 - My dream coming true in the PNW.

This is too weird. I have property off highway 20 between Bend and Sisters and we have the same view of the three sisters. I'm not used to seeing it in other people's photos.

About a month ago I was up putting new stairs on my barn and I used equipment from Sisters Rental and Mike's mobile mix. The same guy from Mikes was out at our property doing our pour.

I am jealous of you new pole barn.

Cary on.

And mine is in Three Rivers South. I too used Mikes mobile mix, for putting in gates. That truck is awesome. His concrete price is stupid high but if you only need a little it is the way to go.

Re: 60x100x18 - My dream coming true in the PNW.

Not a huge update, lots of little stuff. They lag bolted every truss to every pole with 8 - 1" x 14" lag bolts, wow talk about overkill. My engineer said, well it is now hurricane and tornado proof. They installed all the windows except the bathroom, that should be here today or tomorrow. Installed the metal flashing on the leading edge of the roof. Finsihed framing in the east wall where they were driving in and out of for setting trusses. Set all 4 man doors with handles and locks and finished the sheathing for the siding. A few pics:

Re: 60x100x18 - My dream coming true in the PNW.

Since you haven't poured yet, I'll make a recommendation.

Your building is pretty good sized, I think it would be a good idea to have at least one or two subpanels scattered throughout the building in addition to the main panel . It's easier and cheaper to bury pvc conduit from the main panel location to the subpanel(s) location. It's also nice to get the dedicated circuits in conduit too. Welder receps, air compressor, etc.

We usually scratch a small trench into the gravel just deep enough that a skiff of gravel over the top of the conduit will keep it out of the concrete.

I have family in Bend, I can't imagine putting posts 8' into that rocky ground!

That is a great idea Aceman. Especially running electric to where you are going to have your lifts would give everything a really "clean" look and with the 16'+ ceilings you would want electric drops from overhead, in my opinion.

Wow! Nice building and excellent view. You'll need frequent work breaks to go outside and look at the view.

Woke up to freezing rain and ice, so no roofing today. They will be siding all day. ON a brighter note, the driller arrived and is going to drill the holes for the timbers to set the house. Should still be a good day!

Holes drilled for house timbers and concrete being poured for footings for those timbers. This really makes us happy.:D

Amazing build, my one recommendation is put outlets everywhere you can in a space that big. You are to be saluted for getting permission to build the shop before the house, my wife would have stabbed me with a salad fork for even thinking of asking the question.

The barn siding looks awesome. What is the house exterior going to be?

same as the shop, board and bat barn siding with natural stain. We are doing a timber framed entry and patio area as well. I will have lots of pics dont worry. :)

That is the plan, we moved here to be closer to our families. Spent a year and half picking out the right property in the school district we wanted to be in. So this is a one time build for us.

My wife, daughter, and I will be eagerly awaiting pics. We all think it sounds great.

Will do our best to show all the steps.

Yes these are amazing concrete trucks. Never seen one before our job. They cost $350k each and he has 9 of them and they are booked out 2 weeks in advance all year long. I'm in the wrong business. :lol_hitti

Don't want the leaks and we get freak hail storms here the size of softballs. So not so good for skylights.

60-70 mph winds forecasted for today, so NO timbers will be set for the house for safety reasons.

But the siding on the shop will be done and a few other small framing details. Next week the roof and the siding on the shop will be complete and the house will get framed in, then it will be time for some big concrete pads and radiant floor heat plumbing.

What great shop!

I really like the wood siding. I wish I had done something like that.

Looking forward to seeing the progress.

This is an awesome build! We just did board and batten on our mountain house with 4x8 hardie panels and ripped 5/4 x 1 1/4 deck boards every 8". Man was it expensive and time consuming. But it looks fantastic as does your real way of doing it.
