I'm looking to buy a portable jump starter for using at the house and taking to junk yards to try and start an engine I might buy.. what jump starter do you have? how do you like it? I want to spend under $100 but if one really stands out from the rest I'd spend more.

I don't have a recommendation but I gotta say these things are awesome when you actually need one. My wife and I were on our honeymoon in Hawaii and like a fool I forgot that the lights in the cars in the USA don't have daytime running lights for the most part and I have to manually turn them off. No one at the hotel would give us a jump because of some stupid insurance policy. The bellhop quietly told me to follow him and he reached in his car and pulled out a small briefcase looking thing and handed it to me and just told me to put it back in his car when I was done. I hooked up the cables to the battery and the thing worked like a charm. Life saver.

awesome. when I was at school one day I jump started like 6 cars in a row with the portable jump starter we had.. I thought it was so cool to be able to jump cars without needing an outlet to plug the charger into. To bad that model cost like $400

I picked up a " Peak " as in the "antifreeze" people, 600 CCA, back last winter, it will barely assist start any of our small equipment (nothing larger than 26hp). Its all they offered at the store I was at. I should have shopped, but didnt, and paid for it !

I will "tickle" the starter on my 6.0L Suburban, when the battery runs down, you can hear the solenoid (rattling), same goes for any of the other full size vehicles/equipment around here. Its absolutely worthless, and Im talking plugged in/charged for days, fresh, its worthless. It might charge your cell phone. I think it was around $60, Id say it would be a good deal at $6, but like I said, it would not even turn over my 48' Toro Riding mower with a dead battery !!!!! I think the toro has a 140cca battery in it, its that small, and still wont even try to engage the starter.

The last one I bought at the Farm Store prior to the "Peak" was a "Vector" brand, same 600cca, and it performed well for about 4 years, and would start anything we have around here, if the battery in the vehicle had not been dead for months.

Im in the market for a new one, or at least one that works, but not sure what brand to buy. These companies change brands, names, channels of distribution, so often, its hard to keep track of whats **** and what works :eyecrazy:

Id like to add, look at the "clamps" if they are plastic, stay away, if the are metal, probably a better built unit..

I looked at the 3 on Amazon, I like the Clore, where you get one repair after warranty, that would win me over, Im might buy that one. Thanks for posting Signcrafter !

There are a couple decent ones for a little more than your budget, what I would consider the lower end pro models compared to the under 100 models. Here are some on amazon I would consider, http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000JFJLP6/?tag=atomicindus08-20, http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000N4UQL6/?tag=atomicindus08-20, http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000JFHNQA/?tag=atomicindus08-20.

those all look good, I like the auto recharging so I don't have to keep an eye on it.. Is the schumacher one like that? have you used any of those? I could spend $130 no problem, I'd rather have one that will last than one that costs a little less.

I was at one of the local shops a couple weeks ago and the guy was using some cheap AutoZone Duralast branded model, and it was starting a V8 with a dead dead dead battery.

I hate the idea of these boosters, but we are about to leave a car at the airport parking lot for 10 days, and I would like it to start on our return, so thinking about replacing the battery a year or so early, or buying a decent but still less than $100 cheap booster.

I am thinking the "main" feature to look for is maybe easy local replacement. Maybe second feature is size of replacement battery that will fit in them.

*** Looking at a lot of reviews, seems like same brand can be hit or miss on what it starts. One person is saying started 6.6 diesel, other says won't start his lawn mower. Maybe people are getting bad ones even when new?

I may have gotten a dud, I have a Midtronics digital batter load tester, and it wont even run a routine on either of my jump packs, Im guessing they are "gel" or dry cell batteries in them, and the technology in my battery tool does not allow for testing these batteries, either that or they are both junk ?

I have two solar units, one being a 5500 model and the other a 2500. Both are very good and hold a charge a long time. I usually reach for the 5500 first as it definaly has more boost capacity and longer battery life. Id highly recommend the Solar 5500 as I do a lot of the same things your looking to do.

Look or wait for a sale on something good, or buy cheap where its easy to return. JNC660 Jump in Carry, gets a lot of shop use.

I'm thinking batteries may be either improving, or getting cheaper. Look at some of the racing tiny batteries, Odyssey I think around $150, they won't have long capacity, but can start anything.

I am getting rid of my Optima batts and getting Odyssey batts. They will do much better in off-road.

Well it's been a year and a half so I thought I'd ressurect this post to see if there are any current "favorites" out there for portable jump starters.
I still have that big "Duracell" model (Powerpack 600, bought in 2009 for $100 from Amazon), which I bought for my wife, but that thing is pretty hard for her to use, as it is heavy and the cables have to be plugged in. I made the (probably all-too-common) mistake of not keeping it charged regularly, and the battery wouldn't recharge, but I seem to have "nursed" it back to health. Pro's - it has a fairly large capacity battery, it has a/c outlets, it doesn't have an onboard air compressor (hey if I wanted an air compressor, I'd buy one). Con's - the cables have to be carried separately, which would be ok if it had on-board storage for them. No onboard storage for anything, such as the wall charger. No usb output, which is more and more useful these days (I think the current version does have this). It's big and heavy.
If I could design my own, it would probably be similar to the Duracell, but with the "con's" removed. I would also like to be able to keep it plugged in, either to a/c in the house, or cigarette adapter in the vehicle, so I wouldn't have to remember to re-charge it each month. Also there are temperature limits that preclude leaving it in your vehicle on hot summer days.
There seems to be a growing popularity of those small chargers that you recharge your car battery with the cigarette lighter plug, which might be a good light weight way to go (Cobra JumPak 7500 Charger, just coming out).
So what's anyones current favorite jump starter?

I've owned my Stanley jump pack for about 2 years now, and couldn't be happier. It just recently started my 96 Suburban in -15 degree weather. I have a couple of cars that sit for long periods of time, so I use it more than most people.

I have that exact same jump pack. I'm pretty sure I picked it up at Sam's about 3 years ago. The only thing I did to it was put a piece of rigging tape over the switch for the compressor to keep it from being bumped on. I just used it Christmas eve to jump start my mother in law's car. It still works like a champ. Whenever the battery in it goes I will just replace the battery, been very happy with it.

Anyone ever use the snap on jump packs. I am in the market for one as well and can't decide which one to get. Obviously snap on would be nice, but is it $150 bucks more worth it than a good competitor. Advance auto oddly uses a snap on one. The guy said they do 2-4 cars per week during the winter when the people accidentally leave their lights on. The snap on one they have is approx 4 yrs old and works great according to the guy. I forgot the brand they sell there (interstate maybe) but I asked why not use that and he said after the first 3 they went thru they needed something dependable.

I've just scrapped the batteries from two snap on 1700 packs, they do have nice leads and clamps , but really it's all down to the battery, my old cheapy chinese no name pack worked for years , the newer one died in less than a year.
When I get some spare cash I will buy a quality battery and stuff it in the snap on case .

I have a Snap-on Jumper pack. It's never done me wrong. It's hardly ever used, and sits in my personal vehicle in case I need it....It sits for 4-6 months at a time, and the battery has yet to lose it's voltage. There is a digital meter to let you know what the charge is at. Is it worth the extra money for the name? Probably not. But it is extremely nice to have the plug in port on the side and the digital readout, and you know it's made of high quality materials.
My family owns a towing company, and we have "Booster PAC" brand jump packs in every one of our trucks. They get used a dozen times a day, and rarely, rarely do we have to actually get out the old jumper cables.
As someone else said, it really IS about the battery. You can have the best or worst pack in the world, but if you cheap out on the battery inside, you'll never have a quality pack. If you can find a good name brand one for cheap with a bad battery, that's a good way to go.

I( have an older Sears with the 110 volt inverter which is nice. Had to have the battery replaced once.

They just have small lead acid batteries. I have thought that one solution would be to just get a regular replacement battery for the vehicle involved and carry it with a set of jumper cables in the vehicle. Keep the battery charged at proper intervals, install in vehicle when needed, get new battery then.

How did you nurse it back to health? I've got a Stanley that won't charge

Hi, I have a Stanley 450cca/900 peak, I won it at a golf outing, it has a light,a compressor, a USB outlet, an on/off switch, a cigarette lighter outlet, and best of all the charger is built in ! ! ! You can take a plain old extension cord and plug it into a 3 prong charge port in the back. No special charger, that always seems to get lost, dropped or broken.

me too.
one of my newer optimas is bleeding out of an air hole and won't begin to chargd. I'm not even going to.warranty it. It's a core for my sears purchase.

I have the big yellow hf jumper. I love it. bad battery on the first one, this one dead after three years, I'll buy a battery for it.

Got a link to a replacement battery for it? I looked one time and the ones I've found were kind of pricey.

Shop that was so happy with an old Duralast a few months back, got POed and bought a top line Shumacher, and it is a freaking monster that starts anything.

Schumacher PSJ-2212 DSR ProSeries 2200 Peak Amps Jump Starter, list around $250 (street about $150)

Those looking for an Odyssey might also take a look at the Diehard Platinum line at Sears. I'm pretty certain they are AGM and made by Odyssey.
I have an Odyssey in the dragster and 2 Diehard Platinums for the Cummins...

Nothing really that new in rechargeable batteries, so I would guess its some kind of marketing sauce to spice up mundane tech.

JNC 660. This shouldn't even be a question lol.

So how is it better (at $132 on Amazon) than the Schumacher PSJ-2212 (at $118 on Amazon)?

Frankly, I can't tell the difference between any of these aside from the basic capacities that they all list.

My baby right there, going on five years usage and it outshines everything. Have used it as a battery substitute many a time.
