From left to right, the 6 inch, 4 inch and 3 inch. The little guys are there for scale, as is the sodee can.

JKB

I believe I found your vises in a 1912 Millers Falls catalog. What do you think? Yours could still be Backus or Union. They probably didn't change them much.

Also ID'd this one that GETRIDAONE and I have. Someone else has one too, but I can't remember who it is. Millers Falls lists it as a Railroad vise in a 1912 catalog. Like the one above, it appears similar to the earlier Union and Backus vises, so it could also be one of those before they became part of Millers Falls.

I put vise overnight I'm my electrolysis bath overnight and this morning went through the red, light green and base color seems to be a dark green. I'm assuming that would be original color these came at least mine was.uploadfromtaptalk1391516575483.jpguploadfromtaptalk1391516588204.jpg

Cool, thanks. I don't know too much, but I like searching for info. Whenever I come across something on vises I save it, otherwise, I'll never remember where I found it and be able to find it again.

Grouseman, that's cool. I didn't know they made a benchtop version. Luther was a standalone company founded around 1893 by CJ Luther according to this article from 1913. In 1930 they were purchased by a group of Milwaukeans for $100,000 and renamed the Luther Grinder and Tool Co.

So which one of you fellows bought the two Charles Parker #976 on E-bay last Friday. I've been waiting for someone to crow but no one has come forward yet. The one he had showing was in extra good condition but he was selling two. I put in a offer on 1 but someone snagged both of them in just a short while later. I'm kicking myself for not going ahead and buying both and selling one. They were $375.00 apiece, but I figure I could ship one to balane, have him fix it up for $250.00, put it on the stump, sell it for a$1000.00, minus shipping, to and fro, I'd get mine for free.
:D It arrived earlier today

Update on the Prentiss 181:
When I removed the nut, I found a previous brazed repair, half of the base was detached, and there was a crack that spanned the entire nut. After a couple hours with a welder and angle grinder, this is what I have. I'm not completely done, but Ive made some good headway. Sorry, about the pictures. I tried to make them a little bigger.

You dog. I knew it was nice, but that is even sweeter than it showed to be. It's my fault, I tried to low ball the price. That goes to show you that this .50a pound, and $1.00 a pound standards are nice phantasies but the reality is if you stick with those religiously, you are going to miss a lot of sweet pieces of history and be kicking yourself like I am now. It wasn't too far in the recent past that I spotted a rare piece and I paid nearly $3.50 a pound for it, which I couldn't afford but couldn't afford not to. And as singer Bobby Bear said "I got her boys, that makes me the winner".

So my Wilton vise has some serious gouges in the anvil area and on the jaws themselves, what would be the best material to use to fill these gouges up with? I was originally going to have them welded but being as its cast iron I dont think that is an option for me. What about brazing or JB Weld? I'd like something somewhat durable after all it is a vise but I dont plan on beating on this thing like the PO did. Thanks for your help.

You can get new jaws from http://wiltonviseparts.net/ , Kevin is a GJ member and makes EXCELLENT replacement jaws at a very reasonable price!
As far as the anvi is concerned... could you post pictures of the affected (infected, lol!) area? About how deep are the gouges?
Take care!

You are the King.

I weighed all three of mine and they were within 1 Pound of the weights listed in the ad!

The swivel looks interesting, I have a rail system drawn up that I want to use to move the vise back and forth on the bench, now I guess I am going to include a swivel mechanism.

One of these days I am going to stump you...

BTW There are rumors of there being a HUGE Pittsburg vise in these parts. My dog gets wind of it every now and then...

I am stumped by all Wilton questions except "Is that a Wilton bullet vise?"

Can you send me a drawing or pic of your rail system? I haven't figured out what do do with mine, yet. I thought about making it into a big version of a Starkey, but don't really know how to make the stand.

If you find a Pittsburg, you better not even mention it unless you have pics. And strip the meta data out of them first or one of the guys here will use it to locate the vise and throw money at the owner until they sell it.

Here's a Starkey:

Here's my Wilton vise with the damage to the jaw area and the anvil area. Just wondering what would be the best way to fill in these gouges. Like I'd said earlier, I was going to have it welded up but being cast iron, I don't think that's an option for me. Thinking more like brazing or JB Weld or some other liquid metal that would get really hard.

Re: Good deal @ $175???

starrett 4 1/2" looks good except handle. http://chicago.craigslist.org/chc/tls/4283927728.html

There are two Starrett 924's for sale, one on Ebay for $ 425.00, and another one, on CL for $375.00!!!

That's a fair price, if you could get it for less (the CL post is over 3 weeks old), so much the better...

Read the fine print at the bottom of the listing..."Also have OTHER HEAVY DUTY VISES FOR SALE"!!!

HEY----NICK!!!!

That's what I said when I took it out of the SUV by myself a few minutes ago. I will have to get a Parker family portrait some time.

69supercj That one is going to take some serious TLC

I've got a Starrett 925 sitting out in the garage waiting for some love---

Stout vises they are...

If the Shingles ever go away, it'll get restored...

Until the Ever Elusive Craftsman 5197/5198 gets found...

Wilton Tradesman 6 1/2" vise. Not really old, but was saved from the trash heap. My brother got it from his job, they were going to throw it away because one of the bolts securing the jaw had snapped. He gave it to me. I extracted the broken bolt, got a new set of jaws and a spindle retainer clip. A quick repaint, and was good as new. Pipe jaws were even still there.
