Well i found a Prentiss Vise No 182 1/2 with a stand that weighs 462lbs for sale and I couldn't pass it up don't know much about the vise company but once I get everything cleaned up ill list some new pictures of it

Prentiss is a very good brand of vise and looks like you got a big un. these big ones tended to have the back of their slides beat on like an anvil so if yours is in good shape and there are no other cracks or welds you did awesome. there are some gigantic stands showing up lately under these vises.

Oldie and Outlaw my Craftsman I posted a couple weeks ago is a crown top and i'll post pictures when I get my laptop out of the shop with a big Parker vise I found. jaws only 3.5, but like the other Craftsman vise just posted it is in awesome shape.

nice find and glad those Reeds were still there when you decided to grab them. surprised the guy didn't throw in the third for a parts vise for you.

those stands look sweet. any idea how much each one weighs? are you keeping them or selling them with the 4C's that you are going to sell?

I really didn't want to haggle / hassle the guy, the place was HUGE and had monstrous old equipment in there. There were some press brakes so big you could fold a truck. Those 4C's looked like tiny pieces of scrap in the corner compared to all the other stuff around. This wasn't an on-the-side deal either, everything there is inventoried and such and had to do paperwork and even pay tax... Everyone there was extremely nice though, I'm going to keep an eye on their site and see if anything else pops up in the future.

That 205R was pretty well beaten up, the jaws were so worn it was probably only 4" wide now... lol. It would of been nice to have as a freebie if nothing more than for the base, but not really worth the $250.

I took some pics of the 4C's right before I left, will post them tomorrow. I'm still in shock I looked over the slides and there is a little wear right up at the front, but the back where usually people beat stuff to death... NOTHING... No beat marks on the back of the static either. There's wear and such around the jaws, and a few little dings here and there but overall very impressive condition.

Don't know how much the bases weigh. One I could slide around, the other I could barely spin it 90 degrees. I'm going to take the vises off either tomorrow or Saturday, right now they are just bolted on using a piece of allthread and a couple nuts. I have some 3/4" bolts that will look nicer. Anyhow, one of the guys has those big floor scales that can weigh like up to 5,000lbs. I'm curious too what they weigh. I just don't want to move them that far with the vises on and have an accident. It was dicey enough picking the up by the vise to load / unload on the trailer. Those freaking feet can hold some weight, that's for sure!

Nice Jason, shucks half of Texas comes up here to vacation in Estes Park, I would love the one with no jaws. I could give you free room and board with your family if you want then you can see the Mountains, cost ya a 4C though. Nice find. I guess you would **** for having 4 of 4C's. Great job taking the $$ plunge, I am sure you will sleep good tonight.

That is a tempting offer. My parents usually take a trip to colorado each year (sometimes twice a year... what else do retired people do), they go up to around Buena Vista. I know my dad wouldn't mind taking it up. Don't you have like a hundred vises or so??? LOL...

Jason did he give you a discount for buying 2?

No, and I didn't try to haggle him either. I was going to until I saw the place and everything that was going on. I just wanted to get in and get out without causing much of a fuss. I kind of felt like nickel that was holding up the dollar. The price for those was very fair, sure lower is always better but I got the feeling he didn't have all day to play "let's make a deal".

Anybody wanna throw a vise my way? I can't seem to find a big ***. Slim pickens in FL. You can come visit me. I got warm temps and no snow. Price, one of those big *** vises. LOL

Seriously, watch your local CL but also eBay. I've bought several good sized vises over the years from Florida. I think this is just an off-time of the year. Usually you see more stuff during the spring / summer when people are hitting all the garage sales, and also around Christmas there is usually a surge on eBay.

HAHA I know. 7.25 all the way open the kicker is that i dont think this was even really used before me. The jaw plates are in perfect condition. Just a little surface rust nothing that cant be cleaned up. Ive been looking around the garage and found an old craftsman pry bar maybe ill find a tool box tool

Of all the Craftsman's vises i've found, that particular model seems to always be in mint condition. The only time i saw serious damage was when i was surface grinding the "anvil" on a 3.5" model and saw a curious overlapping circular pattern on the striking surface. Once i looked underneath, i saw it had been welded up after a hole was blown through it.

It was so clean and well done, i didn't notice it until i 99% finished with the restoration. Other then that, they seem to be untouched when i find them.

Ding,Ding,Ding, a winner right out of the box.

That was fast, you wouldn't happen to be the one I bought it off ebay from, are you ? :p

It's a 3 1/2" Dunlap 5244. I fell in love with the bullet nose on that era of Craftsman vises the first time I saw one. A Craftsman would have been nice, but Dunlaps don't show up as often, so I'm happy. This one will get a full restoration with a 2-tone paint job (maybe 3-tone). Unfortunately, it will have to wait a while. I have too may projects going right now, and no time to work on them.

- TEASER ALERT -

Let's play a game. I know what this vise is, do you ?

Craftsman???

here's my new big Parker 956 vise on a stand that might weigh more than the 130 pound vise. I have a little work to do to get the static side off the stand because the rust has it almost welded the bolts on it. i'm not crazy about the condition of the jaws, but they work and I love the action of this big Parker. No pictures were up on Dayid's of this vise when it was working last so not sure how many of these are left in use. has anybody checked there lately to see if he was able to get it back up?

Still waiting to order a book that one of you with the vise wisdom can take the time to write like the $200 book they sell that is all about Anvils.

I've seen several for sale on eBay in the past year, one was super nice condition all the way to one that had a brazed repair. They pop up from time to time along with other 6" model Parkers. They are always a treat to see.

Dayid's wiki is pretty much back up, I haven't checked all the pages but I've used it several times in the past couple days and the pages I needed were accessible.

I look from time to time. I don't usually have the time to view CL. I thought I almost found a parker but it was rough from opinions a got. Another than that I only see a wilton ( not a bullet) a lot of crappy craftsman. I did see a Morgan at flea market. I think there's a swap meet in march ill be hitting. Maybe have some luck there.

Have a good one, Gerard

Drivesit, my boy...

Those jaws on your Parker a chipped, sliced, notched, worn, and very tacky...:wtf::wtf::wtf:

You should send Brother Scott a message, and see if he'll whittle you some new ones...:thumbup::thumbup:

I know he loves a challenge, and a set of 6" Parker jaws shouldn't take over 100 hours to make, and his "SAC" (Sell At Cost) shouldn't have a comma in it!!!:lol_hitti:lol_hitti Maybe...

I mean, how can you have such a tacky, tacky vise???:evil::evil:

Oldie, I had never had a big Parker so couldn't pass it up and that stand will fit that 100 pound Craftsman vise nicely that i'm going to find.:evil::evil:

I think that stand might weight 150 to 200 pounds. here's a couple more little vises I found that I had to have because they were cool looking. I've got some clean up to do to figure out who made the chain vise, but the other vise has a lot of information in it's casting.

Based on oldldh's comments, you may be interested in post 10970 of mine. I have been debating on selling them on evilprey, but Think trade, think big.

Okay, as promised here are the pics... This is 4C #3... lol

I just sprayed a little oil in it to open & close a little smoother, haven't bothered cleaning them off at all.

This one has a little torch gash in its jaw, and the usual wear around the jaws. They are also all filled with crud and could use a good wire-wheeling.

Handle is straight, no beating on the slide or back of static... I would of thought for sure something out of an industrial setting would have been beaten to death!

This one's base weighs about 330 lbs.

And here is 4C #4... This one is missing the jaws... It looks like when they pulled the jaws off they stopped using the vise. Must have just put it in a corner and forgot about it... *shrug*... Besides the missing jaws the condition is pretty much identical to the first.

This one's base weighs 550 lbs.

Oldie, thanks for the bump but just finished a set for a 956, not to many GJ members would want to pay what it cost's to build these. I am happy building them for the vises I have. I think Drivesit should look at PghJKB Parker jaws that he has, if not then I might be interested.

Jason, thanks for sharing your Reed's, pretty awesome. 4 of them, wow.

Jason, After you posted and didn't buy them, I hit on Harris Machine 1st time searching and thought about that 4C real hard. I decided freight would be as much as the vise so I didn't go through with it. I kind of thought you would go back and get them. Good Find !!

Kevin, I got the jaws on the American Scale yesterday, A little adjusting back and forth and they fit pretty good. I'll try to post some pictures this weekend.

Hello, everybody. I have a cool little story. I just happened to pass by an estate sale a few weeks ago and decided to stop and check it out. I had a chat with a fine gentleman who agreed to let go of some of the tools and other things that he did not sell if I would clean up and get em outta there. Long story short, I came upon a Prentiss 19 1/2 that was hardly recognizable under the grime and rust. I gave it a bath in some electric h2o and a little wire brush action and it now functions as smooth as silk. Anyway, there is a large weld on one of the jaws that looks like it has been there for some time. I no nothing about dating these things or if it is worth anything, so I decided to submit my story to a panel of experts. You. Just gimmee a sec so I can scrounge up the pics whilst you digest this tale.

the welder certainly didn't spare any material when doing that weld of the dynamic jaw. it might work fine for another 50 years but might break apart there the first time you try to really clamp something down.

look at it this way. the price was right. you have more than 50% of a good old Prentiss swivel jaw vise if that isn't a hunk missing from the back of the static jaw and it probably is usable now.

your choices are to use it and see what happens and watch your toes if it does break again, sell it as a parts vise or wait to find another Prentiss vise that has a good dynamic jaw and a bad static and perform a swap to make one good old vise.

good luck and nice find:thumbup:

Wrench: it looks like Dayid's is up an working again

They would stamp each part with a # so they could be kept together and hand fitted together during production.

Thanks for the info! Yeah, I'm probably going to throw it in the ole' auction dealy and see what happens. Oh yeah, anyone hear of a speedway drill? I got one of those too, but it doesn't work. It looks like a ray gun though, so i wanted to fix it but can't find the manual. If anyone knows where I could download one I would be extremely grateful. It's a blue line type 79 3/8 cap 3 amp 1000 rpm 115 volts ac/dc.

probably won't get much at an auction or Fleabay with that huge weld on it. you might get a few dollars by listing it in Garage Journal's classifieds and finding somebody that is local and needs some parts off of it.

by the way what area are you located because shipping costs might kill any deal and maybe a local guy here can hand you some cash for it?

or bolt it on your bench and use it until you find a better one.

good luck and welcome to GJ

Well, I should add my vise to this thread. The search and purchase is detailed in this thread http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=236203 but it will most likely fade away in the next few days so I'll put it here for more people to see. It is a Simplex 41-S and it moves like butter.

View media item 37855

It's nice to see you picked it up before anybody else did. The problem now is finding a vise that you can uses for everyday beating. That simplex is way too nice. I guess you better get searching for a big bench vise:evil::beer:

Well, it appears to be Braised, not welded so if they did the prep work, preheat and slow cooling properly it could last forever. Is that one a keeper for you?

I'm pretty sure I'm going to sell it. It appears and feels as solid as it should with no indication of the work being there aside from what you see. After cleaning and lube, it feels as good as new.
