Alright so I pulled the trigger last night on the Milwaukee 2797-22 as I felt it was a great combo with the 4.0 batteries. But this is the base for building a well rounded set of great power tools for the foreseeable future. Well the next thing is the 1/2 impact and the main reason for going with the M18 Fuel line. I would like to know what you guys prefer between the pin detent and friction ring.

Thanks guys!

Ring for automotive pin for construction or any type work where dropping a socket could be dangerous or at the very least time consuming.. ie...ladders or scaffolding

on impact, friction rings hugs the socket tighter than pin. When impacting, I like the socket to be held tight. however sockets can be a bear to take off compared to pin type.

Pin detent is a positive lock socket retainer. To remove, you need to depress the pin with a tool - a pick, screwdriver, etc. It's for contractors.

Its an actual pin that locks the socket on as Dan said in the above post, its not the same as a ratchet detent ball.

I like the pin at work but that's cause I can be 100' in the air making repairs. That's a long trip up and down a ladder for a dropped socket. My choice anywhere else is the ring. I really can't stand pin detents but they do have their place.

If you'd rather have the pin lock type, make sure you have a pin punch on your person 24/7 to unlock it. Put it on your key ring or wear it around your neck on a neck chain. Have it with you everywhere you go. Don't even take it off when you shower.

Really? I would think a pin would be much harder to remove a socket from...

The pin type is easy as long as you have a punch. The ring type can be a real pain sometimes and will just fall off when you don't want it to.

I have a snapon air impact with a pin. It is an unmitigated pain in the azz to use for automotive work.

I usually reach for my 30 year old Black & Decker so I don't kave to deal with that pin
