(I'm sure lots of people have used their belt sander in a vise before?)
There's another way to use a belt sander?

Stain is done!!!
I don't like the "natural color" of one of the stains I thought it would be darker but I'm too lazy to redo it... at least it's 3 different colors to make a nice mix of blocks when stacked.

So now I need to do a very light semi-gloss poly coat over them... I really don't want to.... But I'm in too deep at this point.

Still need to do the semi-gloss in the AM but pretty happy how it turned out so far.

Wow!!!... I've just read your thread through, and I'm full of envy at your skills!

You have given me the courage to try and weld myself, even though I doubt that I have the same flair for it, as you clearly have!

Keep up the good work.

Regards, Jacob

Can you say CAREER CHANGE!!!!

Hahaha I don't know about all that but if you want to open a Knife & Giant Jenga store I might be interested.

Hey thanks so much!
I'm always trying to learn new stuff and this forum is a great way to share ideas.
Good luck on the welding there is something fun, creative and for me therapeutic about taking and shaping metal and trying to get it to stick together. Even though I have only found ways to make more garage furniture that I don't have space for.
My only advice is read all the warning stuff about what chemicals not to spray on the metal before welding and all the safety precautions. Cause once you don't have to worry about splatter falling on your "junk" you can focus on the welding.

So quick update...

The poly is done on one set! I got real hiiiiiigh applying it... I thought if I put on the poly really really light I wouldn't have to sand it and I would be done... Well I thought that cause obviously I don't know what I'm doing. The poly dries to a rough texture so I had to sand it once again arrrrrgh!

Poly done:
egu4edyt.jpg

Back to sanding:
4usa4e2u.jpg

So the light sanding took away all the shine so I found some furniture oil and used it and buffed the shine back into it.
epusuru4.jpg

Here is the one done compared to the other one that is only stained.
usuvydaz.jpg

So I think I'm going to look into a sealer like linseed oil to wipe down the other set?
Cause for a set of blocks that gets tossed on the ground I think it will do.

Damn thats alot of work for a giant jenga puzzle.:scared: My back is hurting just looking at all that wood on the ground.

I was laying on ground cause my back was/is killing me as I read this post... That was creepy...

And I agree with you Alex way too much work for a game of blocks. (next time I'll buy it on amazon for $75 and go without the satisfaction of doing it myself)
I would rather be restoring a vise but you vise hoarder people keep buying them all up.

No surrender No retreat!!!
(Not only a great 80's movie but also my motto on this project)

So I spent about an hour searching some threads on here then googling different ideas on how to finish the second set of blocks and looked into Cort Wood Finishing Spray or a linseed type oil or using paste floor wax... But I was stalling... I already had the poly so why not?

One more round!
5u2ujase.jpg

And I got lucky I was looking at some options to set the game on so people wouldn't have to bend down low to play... Was thinking like a milk crate (the wifey could do some ribbon or something to class up)or make a wood type box (just typing that makes me cringe) but my neighbor today was throwing away these end tables. They are perfect! Just a little paint and they should be good to go!

This is the rendering I did of the two Lista cabinets. I use dark gray instead of black so the details could show up. Black washes out all of the edges.

The dimensions are approximate. The internal guts of the SKetchup models are metric with the scales shown in inches. Scaling and Rounding is slightly off.

Glad it turned out. Sell it on Amazon for that $75!

Hahaha.... never I'll be buried with it! Or maybe use it for a Viking type fire funeral... That means I'd have to learn to make a little boat or raft... Eh... Well see when that day comes... Plus I gotta look through the bag and see how it held up from falling over and over on the ground, could be a couple split blocks or missing ones.

Hey thanks! I'm glad too! I'm sure it has nothing to do with how much complaining I did to those friends about how long it took to make and if they didn't play I would harm them. And that is about as much green as you will ever see in this town.

It took about three days to clean up all the wedding center pieces and decorations etc. that took over every work surface of the garage. I guess I'm not allowed to throw that stuff away? I completely forgot to take a beforehand pic. As I continue to explain to the wifey that storing things that she cares about in welding and grinding areas is baaaaad.
So here's the current setup for now... until building the new bench begins soon.

Running out of places to store scrap metal, gotta add a wall rack in the future.

Looks great. Amazon here I come.:lol_hitti

Save your money and make your own for twice the price. You got a real nice setup and you can do all your cuts out back on your wood bench and not have to deal with the mess of covering your garage and rc cars in sawdust. By the way the new vise looks great!

Hey thanks a lot. I am excited to get it started. The garage feels very unorganized without my main bench.
The next bench is going to be something like if Jack Olsen's bench and StevO's bench banged and had a baby then that baby started dating duker's welding table...

Just finish reading from the beginning subscribing awesome

Hey thanks a lot... I don't always do it right the first or second time but I still have a lot of fun hitting stuff with hammers in my shop.

Subscribed, I'm hooked, now I need to learn how to weld! AWESOME Work.

Thanks! Once you get it down you'll start looking around your house for things that need to be welded.... Or you'll see plastic or wood objects and think how great that thing would be if it was made out of some heavy steel... Like a dog gate or steps for a dog to get on a high bed or to make a "dog food/water dish riser" so a large breed dog doesn't have to bend over so low to eat... For some reason all those examples are about my future doggy projects.

Finally found some Lista cabinets not too far away...
ypu3a3y7.jpg

A "little" rust where the powder coat paint was chipped off... Well see how bad it is once I get some sand paper on it... I'm 99% sure I'm going to need a tetanus-shot after lifting them.
he7udutu.jpg

So operation bench 2.0 will start after a little more planning...

It would be easy to just sand and paint cabinets and then add a solid core door and a 10 gauge piece of sheet metal around the door then mount directly to the tops of the cabinets. Best part of this option as I want to expand the bench it's just adding a cabinet(s) and the top. Something like this...
gape2emy.jpg

And this...
je6ega3e.jpg

Or could build some legs to support the weight of the top and anything I drop on it and slide the cabinets under. Something like this... ( Also would be easy to add a receiver hitch for vise and grinder doing it this way)
esy2uze2.jpg

Or go the SteevO route and box each cabinet in a frame and add adjustable feet then bolt the top to an angle iron lip on the front and back... I know first hand this option makes for a very solid heavy duty bench... But these cabinets are all ready pretty heavy so that means it will be extremely heavy to relocate to the next garage.

All feedback always welcomed!

Thanks!

Have you ever bought an old
Muscle car from a guy that says "this beauty has spent it's entire life out in the Arizona desert and has no rust." Then you drive it home and your foot goes through the floor pan.

That's kind of how I feel about these cabinets... It was suppose to be a little peeled up paint on top that had a little visible rust... And when I got into it today I found a lot more hiding... It's actually not too bad... And this is great practice for when I finally buy a classic bronco and I need to replace rust out panels. Couple more days of grinding it to bare metal and some primer and paint and it will be are little secret shhhhhhhhhhhh.

Progress so far:

Happy days, Lista cabinets! Good thing there is plenty of metal to grind down and repaint. If you mount to top of the cabinets you will need a way of leveling them. Some kind of welded nuts with adjustable feet. Make sure that the drawers are angled back just a hair so that they close easy and stay closed.
Looks like it was a tight fit in the car.

I'm extremely impressed with how thick the metal is compared to my newer craftsman stuff and even though it's the older type of drawer slides (2005)that they no longer make parts for, it slides real nice. I think it was your thread where I read you use Lista at work? Hard to keep up with all the garage builds I read but Thanks for the tips on tilting it back. Debating on making a SteevO type frame with leveling feet or just making some feet that bolt on.

1 box done!
And by done I mean no where near done....
Still need to do all the drawer faces
I know I am suppose to primer the bare metal right away but the wind is so crazy today no way to spray it. Going to have to wait till next week I hope it doesn't flash rust?

Only took 4 of the paint stripper pads... At one point I was thinking of finding a place to media blast them... But it's a cabinet for the garage so eh...

So I made a "little" progress today... It's funny it's hard to tell that any progress was made... Went through another 3 paint/rust remover pads doing the second cabinet... Need to find some place online to buy in bulk cause they get expensive buying them from home depot but they work great stripping the paint and rust.
I tried the harbor freight sandblaster gun for a minute to get the corners but it just took too long... Even though I had a respirator and full face shield I'm still tasting sand in my mouth.... That's healthy right?

I got lucky one of my buddy's comes in pocket size so he was able to get inside a cabinet and rough up the powder coat inside...
yzyre3et.jpg

Then I grinded all the surface rust on the slides then soaked in 3-in-1 oil to penetrate the hard to reach spots.
u2a7aza5.jpg

Still need to rough up the drawer faces and tape off the handles for paint....
It's lucky I enjoy doing this stuff (while the weather is nice) I keep thinking about powder coating or taking to a place to paint... But the cost just keeps adding up... So I'll prob just rattle can.
But I would say to anyone looking for lista's check out motorheadextraordinaire.com for a few dollars more and I do mean a few bucks more I could have bought brand new (rust free! And powder coated!) cabinets... I could be organizing tool in them right now!
Here's where I'm at:
3y3yvary.jpg

hymutuqa.jpg

u2enaha4.jpg

Still need to take care of a little more rust.

You are a glutton for punishment!! :) You need to start scouting out for some dry strip places near where you live.

Hahaha... I know it's going a little crazy for a garage cabinet... But us vegas people don't know about this thing called rust so I didn't know what I was getting into.

Still waiting for your updates on your bench so I can borrow some ideas!

Lots of work on those cabinets but from your postings of your previous work they will certainly turn out great.
You did a great job on those tables also.

Hey thanks a lot!
Not too sure how great the cabinets will turn out... my painting skills need a lot of work.. Wish I had a nice powder coat shop in my backyard I would powder coat everything. Those tables were fun to make, It was nice to bring my welding hobby inside the house and share with my wife... Plus the more stuff she finds on Pinterest that she wants made the easier the conversation for a TIG welder in the future is.
