I see some termite action in one spot. If they ever advance to the center, your finished. I doubt you could give a vise away after that.
As usual, nice job on the Wilton

I dread the day but I've planned ahead and have an old milk crate lined up for a pedestal.

And thank you. You guys should see autopt's C1 he has listed. Mine looks like an old boat anchor compared to his beauty.

Just soak the stump down with diesel to help preserve it...

Man, anyone live near Hazelwood, MO ???? Government Liquidiation has a sick amount of vises going on auction there... Here's just one of the several listings...

Nice job,

And Copper green works well to stave off the insects and rot. Kinda Funny most people want to get them rotted out fast so they can remove the remains easily...

Nicely done. :) Personally, I prefer ones which look restored but used, or even just used and well maintained. Restoration, (barring work done to guarantee mechanical soundness and rectify defects or abuse), isn't a necessity with some. Think they look a lot more natural and retain marks of the life they've lead. Could never personally take to ones which have been sanitised to the hilt. I'm not saying they don't look good or that the work done isn't just as good, but they lose part of their history and uniqueness, IMHO.

by the way here is the wounded Prentiss #4 I'm pulling apart that needs a new jaw or jaws and the female thread piece is missing if anybody has the parts can PM me. also another picture of the Prentiss #21 "coachmaker's" vise i'm restoring. warming up around here so let the prepping and painting begin.

That should look dapper when it's done. :) I'm warming to those vices. Shame it's not something we tend to see across here. I think I'd be making a spot for one if it was. :D

with the angle of your first picture it was hard to read, but it is made in USA and for a 40 year old vise looks mint.

I have had some Wilton vises with dates on their slides that are the expiration date of their 5 year warranty period so it could be a 1972. until one of us writes a book on Vises or maybe just one on Wiltons or shares their knowledge then i'm not 100% sure what to tell you, but I can say they are great vises and yours is a keeper.

here's a 1957 C1 I owned that had an EXP 1962 on the slide.

Very nice.

The Wilton has a couple of flaws, but it's structural integrity is intact. For what I purchased it for and use it for, I'm very satisfied.

Interesting Wilton history read here.

I see quite a few Reeds, Simplexes, Columbians and Wiltons on that pallet. Makes by back sore and wallet scream just by looking at it.:lol_hitti

My one score for the day. I almost didn't see the little guy until a buddy pointed him out to me as i was leaving.

3 ¼" Desmond Stephan Simplex in great condition. There are a few weld splatters on the jaw towers and what looks like a small bead on one jaw insert side but the rest is really clean.

thanks VA, Fretters and Caddy. I was thinking of starting a thread with vise repair 101 because we are always running into something a little different that I know there is more help on this board than any book or manual we might find.

the other day Great White had a little issue with a sleeve that either had lost it's set screw or needed one tightened and he had it fixed in a matter of minutes by posting the issue on here.

by the way here is the wounded Prentiss #4 I'm pulling apart that needs a new jaw or jaws and the female thread piece is missing if anybody has the parts can PM me. also another picture of the Prentiss #21 "coachmaker's" vise i'm restoring. warming up around here so let the prepping and painting begin.

The jaw face is why I haven't finished the resto on my Prentiss. Going to have to fabricate it myself. And I am not the best with small stuff like that. I can make heavy duty stuff that is solid, but jaw faces are kinda small.

I am drooling and calculate on that big lot of vises. I get paid just before the auction ends too.

WIll post pics of today's find later. A Cole vise for 57.20 with tax at auction.

Balane, you are so so modest. You already sold that vise before you could even list it and for more then I can dream on getting for mine. You sir are unbelievable!! This is my C1. I wish I lived closer to Balane. I need me a stump!

Does anyone recognize this name plate?? I can make out what looks to be a 45 and "Size" near the middle but that's it. A lady on a FaceBook sale page wants $35 for it ...

I don't know what I'd do with it except restore it. :D

I bet that comes in handy for getting a good grip for precision apple peeling. ;) In reference to the kitchen counter.

The first row looks like Chinese characters, possibly. :dunno: Unless you have a specific use for a clamp on vise, I'd personally pass.

Cuda, not sure what the badge says, but not very unique and has a broken piece missing on one of the jaws. keep looking and take a pass on this one IMHO.

Big Caddy: nice find. maybe a 50 pound vise isn't big enough to get your attention so good thing you brought your vise hound with you because that one looks like a keeper.

Cuda Chick, That seems high to me too for a clamp on exposed screw hobbiest vise.

One thing unique on that one is it appears to be a "Polish" design. the Dynamic jaw in where the static jaw usually is... Plated handles imply import, but from where? I can't recall seeing an Asian made vise with that jaw configuration.

I broke my 4" Kobalt vise. The piece that the spindle threads through broke. I've googled for parts, but can't find anything so I'm thinking about a replacement. I would like something bigger than 4". I work on vintage cars and it seems like I was constantly at the limit of the 4" opening.

Looking for advice on what to buy. I found a 4" Morgan and a 4 3/4" Simplex (he said it's referred to as a 5") nearby for $175 and $200, respectively. The guy that has them restores and sells vises for a living. He has torn them down, greased them and painted them. He says the Morgan is a little stouter and the nicer of the 2.'

TIA

Tom

I don't think you can go too far wrong with either of those brands and sounds like you might have a good source. price is up to you and since it's restored you don't have to spend a day or more getting it ready after buying one that needs some rehabbing.

of course the guys on here including me would be able to help you more if you have pictures and if no pictures available then model #'s because both makers had several models.

take a look at the vise wiki on www.dayid.org under those makers and see all the models that he has found with the help of a lot of the guys on here.

TommyV9, I posted in your other thread a link to a nice Reed 206 for sale in MO... I think you will drool over that if you go see it in person. ;)

American steel: nice name and what a resume you just posted so if nobody already mentioned it Welcome to Garage Journal.:thumbup:

So tell us since you seem to have about 1000 pounds of vises on that little Craftsman bench do you have any pictures or have you seen an actual Reed 109 or 209? please post if you have any to share even if a 1930's or earlier picture.

Jason very cute picture and appropriate.

Here's a couple Reed 109 pics. They were from a craigslist posting a year or two ago in NC. If I recall correctly it was $350 and no I didn't get it.

WTF are you serious?!?!?! If you are jacking with us I will cut you! It's not nice to tease!

Why on earth didn't you buy it? Even if you didn't keep it you could of pretty much re-sold it at a name-your-price.... :(

Heck if I knew about it I would of driven the thousand miles or so to get it!
