Been a while since I could get to any garage sales - been too cold or snow-covered here.

Last weekend, snagged these items:

3 copies of Home Shop Machinist from the late 1980s, VG condition. FREE
Craftsman brace, a little chrome missing but works 100%, $5
bag of new cotter pins, $1
hand marking punch with carbide tip, $5, I know it's a bit much for a used tool but I really needed one

I'd love to see a close-up of both sides of the head. If that's too much trouble, a description of the markings on both sides would be appreciated. Is it a 4 oz hammer?

I thought things were looking promising here, 3 sales with tools starting today with more in the coming days. First sale was the only decent one and it was nothing to get excited about. The other two sales, unfortunately were freakin vendors from the back woods boot sale I went to last weekend...swear as I am sitting here, a lady was hanging a fruit scale up at the second sale that she bought from ME Saturday for $1 with a $15 price tag on it

I got a handful of Geodore wrenches and a rusty beat up crown top carpenters box before stopping at Dunkin and heading home...

First estate sale in a month and I missed out on this cabinet. First one I've seen for sale around here. Guy must have gone on a shipping spree at Sears in the 70s, there was a made in the US 5" vise for $35 and a 1/4" block grinder for $25. Passed on both since I already had one of each.

Managed to find an unlisted one on my way home but the only interesting thing was a pair of 50s fans. They weren't brass so I left them and after doing a bit of research it looks like they were over priced anyways.

Maybe something else will popup this weekend.

I don't know what they were asking, I'm assuming it went with the tools since I didn't see any craftsman hand tools left behind either. I saw a few on eBay the other day, they're asking $100/each. I'd probably pay that for one, but not the extra $50 for shipping.

I picked up a couple nice wood planes during my ongoing vise search and don't know much about them.

1) Union brand one does concave and convex shaping and should clean up nicely. good tool or one for the shelf to look at?



2) Miller's Falls nice size wood planer. classic or plain planer?



3) old school tape measurer made out of wood (hard way to measure but had cool factor so grabbed it)


4) old smallish drill Companion 1/4 inch electric should clean up nicely and will work for those holes you want to drill at a snail's pace

Man, planes are poping up everywhere recently. What number is that (look on the side, middle down towards the bottom edge), I can't tell exactly from the pics? Miller Falls are solid planes.

Here are some close ups of the Stanley Bailey #7 plane I got last weekend.

The rust is purely surface and after taking photos I did a quick pass with scotch bright and I saw a good surface underneath. This will not need or get any harsh restoration.

These pics are from a sale last weekend and it was pretty good. It didn't have the greatest selection of tools but i did get some other really great stuff. The house was huge 2 story in the old part of LA and the house was built in the late teens.

Most of the tools i grabbed were Starrett or B&S. I found 1 plomb wrench and a snap on speeder.

Remember that Proto box i picked up last weekend? I got it all cleaned up.

I think it came out pretty nice considering how much white paint was caked onto the outside.

DIF, the Companion drill: 1932 or 3 to 1940, was when Sears branded things Companion the first time.

No. 18 on the Miller's Falls plane which i'm guessing is 18 inches long? while i'm on this subject anybody know what the best thing is to spray on the plane when using to eliminate drag. Silicone or maybe a bee's wax?

thanks Outlaw for the tip on the little drill and it almost sounds like it's in slow motion so might be great for screw removal or tapping.

BC: yes you scored some awesome items and with the vises you found and posted on the vise thread you might have to stay in the shop for a couple days and let the other guys get some. or not?

That restore came out looking like new. Is this from cleaning down to the original paint? What cleaner(s) do you use and what process? I have project that I would like to salvage the original paint color as much as possible.

I use TopCoat on the metal surfaces in my woodshop. Wax can melt from friction when using the plane and it can transfer wax to your workpiece which can be a disaster when its time to put the finish on.

There was some dirt with a layer of sawdust/oil upon a fine coating of white paint.

I just washed the box lightly then used lacquer thinner on a rag to remove the paint I honestly didn't think it would come out that nice but it did. Then I polished it with rubbing compound and turtle wax to finish

The inside was just vacuumed and dusted with a rag. It had hardly been used if at all

I try to stay in the shop but I hardly fit in there; too many vises

Everything in the last few posts I've made have been from multiple weekends of good sales. I even took the remaining weekend off the spend time with my woman. The big Athol was found on a routine errand while working. Sometimes I just stumble onto amazing things

Here is some more items including the Winchester BP. I liked the unique shape but didn't know what brand it was until yesterday when i cleaned off some of the surface rust. Its a bit worn but its a Winchester.

The Lunkenheimer oiler and Blackhawk tool catalog were found in an antique store over the weekend. The oiler is NOS and the catalog is an early 1940s. Aside from the fold and some stains, its in really great shape!!

Can you take a pic of the depth adjustment knob? Clean and true the sole then throughly rub in a coat of Johnsons paste wax then buff it out. Good for all wood working surfaces table saw, drill press, etc. Just a heads up, silicone and wood, especially wood you plan on finishing is a big no no.

Agree, that winchester trademark on a hammer is cool. Those lathes were like a small shop smith back in the day. Had a dozen attachments, none of which besides the wood rest were all that useful.

As for using them, well that depends on your own preferences. I would be using them. At least the Union one. I could make good use of that, and I don't yet have one. I have other hand planes that I also use often. As for the rule. It is very much a tool of today. I work occasionally at a lumber yard in the mill. This is the type of rule I actually use most often. Sure, I have a tape clipped to my belt but the accuracy and ease of use of the rule is superior for many jobs. We still buy them new on a regular basis.

OK! It's not often I get to post something during the week!

Some of you may recognize this from a while back in the Vintage box thread! I asked for help in snagging it from a continent away, and I got it! (Thanks Squashfest! ).

It took some time, but was worth the wait! We started this about 5 weeks ago, and he was able to snag the box after some delay on the seller's availability, then packing things like this are always an adventure! Another week crossing the Continent! Cost more than 2X the purchase price for shipping, so close to the highest price I've paid for a box! Cost per drawer, WAY more... ($90 total)


Its a 1942 (or so) Long C marked 2 drawer drop front tool box! (Tag is not a decal; riveted tag) it will (after cleanup) house all my long C Craftsman tools! I've been lusting after one like this for a couple of years, since a guy here on GJ found one, and it cleaned up to near pristine, and then he stuck it up on Eprey for an obscene price.

I'll get more pics up probably this weekend after cleanup!

VERY slight rust, not much and all surface rust. I'll probably break down and buy some Evaporust for down there, and then neutralize the areas...
