Hey Jason, thank you for posting this! :D Though the deal is still kind of in the works, I went ahead and pulled the trigger on his Reed. It's a 103 1/2R and I couldn't find out much about it online at all ... that may be a really good or bad sign LOL but I figured it'll be a fun one to get my feet wet on. I'll be reading up as time permits (not much of it for personal projects this time of the year) and hope to do it serious justice. Any input in the meantime is appreciated -- it's the 'art deco' style and whether it should be customized or original is going to be up to you guys: you're the experts and I want to do it right.

OK Chick!! Back away slowly, u got signs of a cast iron disease known as "VISE vice". U might b 1 of its 1st female victims. u been warned.

I personally go with customizing the newer later vises and go with high detail paint jobs on the old antique y traditional ones. 2 me that reed needs high detail paint job. good luck.

Can't see why not, provided the metal is prepped properly. Wouldn't think it would be the best thing for a bath though. That should be enamelled if you're intending to use it.

Probably because a cast iron tub needs enameling (not paint..) to hold up. I can't see why CI can't be powder coated, but I could be wrong...

Cuda Chick, definitely mask off the slide jaws and slide mating parts, and PC that thing! Go Wild! (Hmmm 'Cuda green? )

Cuda: did you actually see in person what looked like a vise and tool museum or did you buy it from a picture that has yet to be picked up. looks like you got the best one of the bunch from what i remember. more pictures when you have it in your hands but it looks like it might almost be usable while you are contemplating the color to paint it.

Renn: man that is a nice cart of Prentiss vises that you shared with us. i have a cart similar that i just use for transporting things from my trailer and was thinking of putting a vise on it like you did with the Columbian. if you put something heavy in the Columbian does it want to tip or stand steady?

You will be quite pleased with your new reed. I picked up a 203 R a few months ago and the first thing you will notice is how stout they are, even for such a small jaw size. If the price is right, grab the Athol and the one with the pennsylvania keystone on the cheek of the dynamic jaw. I don't remember what brand it is but it's good old USA iron

drivesitfar: no, the cart is heavy enough it does not want to tip.. I do need to put a stop on it so it does not roll so easily when I am working on something. I picked the cart and the columbian up at an auction for 55 dollars late last year.

That's pretty cool bud, too bad it's so far away from ya. While I'm trying to horde as many Reeds as I can, I've been keeping an eye out for unique vises that you just don't see too much.

Out of curiosity, what are they asking for it?

Does anyone have info on Emmert mechanics vises? Even just a date range would be awesome. I've searched around a few times and could never really find much hard info on their "Tiger" series vises. Thanks to this tread I've been inspired to do some painting. Hopefully I can get it done this week. Any info would be appreciated.

Zkling: do you have any full size pictures of your old girl? Emmerts are a treat to see and glad you found a way to grab one.

Clik: that old parker isn't a bad vise even though it's missing it's pipe jaws. might be a late 1800's with the old style swivel base on it.

Renn: i paid $150 for my cart without a nice Columbian sitting on it. nice score because my seller said he paid $180 just for the wheels and it's rated for about 4000 pounds.

Aaron: that is a nice Wilton machinist vise and need to know the jaw width to tell you the model #. if it is a 3 inch i think the model # is 643, 4 inch is 644, and 5 is 645 and 6 is 646. i could be wrong, but i also think it was made in USA.

nice stand and did you get the vise like that or did you already spiff it up?

Clik: that big red vise has been for sale for maybe a couple years now.

Old Swivel Vise US Made

Did Parker take Smith over? cause those jaws are definitely Parker!

Hmmm I wonder if Smith is linked to LC Smith (Another shotgun MFG.)? :dunno:

Not too bad of a price, if it's welded though... eh... Why can't people treat **** right? So irritating to hear/see so many cool vises that have been abused.

need a moving truck and head to this sale. 15 or so decent looking vises, huge Baldor grinder on a stand, an anvil and who knows what kind of tools this person had. too far for me.

Hi all,

New member here. Picked up this Wilton a couple of weeks ago from the leftovers of a marine propeller foundry/machine shop auction. Got a great steal of a deal $10. Some damage (jaw rest broken off) and the jaws were badly beat up, but it turned out well.

Mike

Do you guys ever post wood working vises? I'm primarily a woodworker and have restored a few woodworking vises as well as machinist vises. I've seen tons of amazing machinist vises on this thread but no woodworking vises. Please let me know if I'm off course by posting this.

Thanks,

Mike

Not at all off course. A vise is a vise in all its forms and purposes. Also vises from other countries. And that wood vise is nice.

That's a great looking vise. I have a Morgan 10A (posted several pages back) that I restored and mounted under my bench. It's invaluable for times that I need a large jaw face area without crushing the work piece. Like you, I'd love to see more woodworking vises.

Hey Arn, love both vises and welcome to the GJ.

I went to look at a newer 4" Parker yesterday and ended up with this one instead, a 278 also with 4" jaws. The PO had already cleaned it up quite a bit but the swiveling jaw is really tight. Once I get it loosened up a bit I'm just going to mount it up and use it.
