I knew a steevo bench was coming in this build! Awesome work Jon! You are skilled to say the least!

The only concern to this point I have seen is the spray can rack in the compressor closet.
I would be a bit worried about possible fire/combustion from the heat trapped in there as well as the arc/spark when the compressor kicks on!

Otherwise, I'll be following this one to the end! Awesome, awesome work!

Thanks man yeah I don't see it really being an issue as I don't run the compressor if I am not there - I unplug it. I check the closet often as well so any fumes/etc would/should be noticed before an issue!

Nice LCD mount! What do you plan to use them for?

I build a lot of wiring harnesses and do a lot of ECU work so I am constantly dragging my laptop around and over the years it gets scratched, dirty, etc. So, I built a PC just for the shop and will be using it for everything from schematics to tuning software to youtube/rhapsody, etc. It will be great to have a desktop out there with two large displays - no more touchpad and ****. The monitors will be directly over the bench top, so it will be like a desk out there.

Awesome dude - like you, I found a lot of threads on this forum inspirational... especially Steevo's bench thread (duh) and Jack Olsen and all of his creative ideas. It's really a great forum - it's more than just garages honestly!

Awesome to hear you found that useful - I shortened the cable as well which made it much more reasonable and inconspicuous.

And with that said I am going to place some photos here. I had to work today (like, work work, not garage work... lame) until about 12-1230, but I didn't let that ruin my weekend of doing some work. I made significant progress today. Unfortunately I have to work again tomorrow so I am not going to get a full day in at home, but it is what it is. I am excited to share my plans for the top of this thing

The top came from Grizzly.com - was going to use an Ikea top which was more reasonable at $160 - $195 ea but I would need two of them and connect them as my total length is like 115" or so. I have purchased a lathe, metal brake, etc., from Grizzly and saw they had tops. The great thing about it is they shipped it to my work from their PA warehouse so it was quick. That, and its one piece so no sectioning or anything lame like that. The best part is that it showed up and had a sticker on the underside talking about installation and care and it stated the top is from www.ButcherBlock.com so it turns out Grizzly is a reseller for ButcherBlock.com which is all US made lumber counter tops! The quality is amazing.

Yep! Two HF 44" chests with a "side cabinet" between. The side cabinets have a lip on either side to hold them on the HF 44 so you have to cut that off in order to fit it between. Other than that, its a typical Steevo-influenced workbench lol

Quick question about your bench and computer, do you plan on standing when using the computer or sitting on a stool/chair? I only ask because it didn't look like you mounted the monitors at a comfortable standing/viewing height and you would need to lean over to comfortable type if sitting (at least for me). So was curious to your train of thought on that. Also for mounting your monitors, how did you arrange the power? Did you install a gang box with outlets or did you run an extension cord up the wall (or down?)? It wasn't evident in your pictures where your wire runs were.

Actually my bench top is exactly 41" so its exactly "bar height" in terms of counters. I did this specifically because I want to use stools at the bench. I have a kobalt stool and will be picking up others for seating. So, since I have a bar height counter in my house, it was a great test its a perfect height for standing and working or sitting on a stool and working. The monitor center point is 14" from the surface, so thats 55" up the wall - I am 6' so that works very very well also.

For the power, the monitors don't use standard atx power cables they use a transformer like this:

So I fished the DC voltage side of the transformer up through the wall through two recessed cable access holes. The brick part seats neatly on the floor all velcro'd together to keep it tidy. I should have taken a picture of my velcro job... I am HUGE into cable management..

Thanks yeah its actually a Pixma 9500 II, but very similar. The Epson large format is my wife's - we're both into photography/etc. She does crafting so she uses both printers a lot.

Thanks Jeff! As an IT guy I have to have networks running! This setup is a lot more... economical (?) than what I set up at my parents house. I was running Dell 5448's with VLANs etc. This is simple, clean, and not too expensive. I have three Cat6 drops in the garage for any IP cameras I might need in the future as well!

Finally got around to wiring the speaker terminals and power for my receiver/audio stuff





Simple 4" holesaw was enough to expose both plugs on the receptacle. Silicone tubing used to prevent the super sharp edge from cutting into cables. Both the receptacle and the audio wiring are behind the right hand cabinet - wiring through wall and into attic. Going to drop down on the sides for my speakers soon.

I bought (4) 4-Inch LED recessed lights so I don't have to run my flourescent lights all the time as its a decent amount of electricity and quite bright, these will go in tomorrow!

Thanks man - ha, I would go for a GPU but this is all about being as power efficient as possible. This PC is actually pretty nice for a garage... Core i5 4670K, 8GB ram, blu ray drive, Samsung 840 Pro SSD (256GB), and the two monitors.
