My Prentiss #92 with soft jaw inserts:

Soft jaws Prentiss.jpg

Same dude as Cuda Chick's inserts made these. Also got a set for my little Prentiss # 53 1/2:

Prentiss #53 soft jaws.jpg

Nice quality product with good magnets.

I did give the seller some feedback that I would like to have the jaw insert height cover the entire height of the original jaws. But for $5 per set...??

Its been a while since i've posted some more finds that i have had laying around the shop.

First up is a Craftsman 5191 fixed base with 4" jaws. The pads are in great shape but as i've started to break it down for refinishing, 2 screws have been destroyed:sad: Its in great shape and should look great when done

My next find is about as common as an albino unicorn that talks:lol:

For you serious Wilton Collectors out there, behold, the rare Wilton 4150S PowRscrew!!!!

It might look like a simple bench vise but the hydraulic assist mechanism built into the operating handle guts will clamp down with 3 tons of pressure!!

That explains the puny undersized operating handle on this hog.

It was a total fluke made by wilton and only lasted a few years before they tossed the idea on the junk pile for good

The vise is dated Jan of 1974 which is a few years later then other 2 examples that i've seen before.

The hydraulics are gonna be a pain to get apart but ill keep plugging away until i get it done.

I always thought the rarest two things in the known universe were "Unobtainium" and "Rocking Horse Manure", but your unicorn has put my two in the shade...:lol:

I nearly choked on my cornflakes, when I saw your Craftsman 5191...:drool:

There is supposed to be a 5" version of that vise, I think...I wouldn't mind finding one...

Dare I say---paint it "Arrest-Me-Red"...:rocker:

There was another Wilton PowRscrew rebuild on this thread, and it looked like something that would be the "Answer to the question nobody asked...":wtf::wtf:

Interesting and complicated...dare I say...:evil::evil::evil:

Ive seen the breakdown that Craig did on his powerscrew but it has some major gaps in the timeline. Not to mention that mine is a bit different. Notice the large aluminum collar mine and not his? they are machined differently but i'm sure the inside is pretty much the same.

Its gonna take some time to get it apart but i will and make it working again.

As for the Craftsman, Arrest-Me-Red was the shade i was thinking of to replace the other one that got away.

Splain it to us Big Caddy. How's that thang work? When I think of a hydraulic vise I picture a pump handle like a horizontal bottle jack.

There is a mini hydraulic piston that engages when you clamp something down. As the screw tightens, the piston engages and pumps up, effectively becoming a force multiplier. That is why they could use such a small handle because you didn't really need to crank on things to tighten.

The first two should be familiar---the last one is a "it'll look like this---sort of"...

Me thinks, I will give you a---

Here is a Reed 204R(not sure what the R means). If anyone is interested.

http://milwaukee.craigslist.org/tls/4419246747.html Sent from cPRO craigslist Client for Android https://market.android.com/details?id=craigs.pro.plus

The R signifies that it has a swivel base. If it was a fixed base it would have an S after the number. This is a new(er) numbering system. Previously a fixed base would have been a 104 and the swivel base would be a 204. I don't know when they made the change, but it was at least 30 years ago or more (I think). Personally, I don't understand why they felt the need to change it. :dunno:

But there are also non-swivel vises that have the "R" designation so it can not be the model code for a swivel vise.

Example:
http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=108302

It seems to be the case that Reed "R" vises were made during a period that included the "oil" hole in the dynamic jaw. I've never seen an "R" vise without the oil hole.

Is it possible to buy a swivel base and attached it to the Reed? I'm very happy with them, the Parker has to weigh close to 70 - 80 lbs, I about died carrying it into my house!

andrew, slowdown man, back away slowly and catch ur breath, its a sickness call "evil iron takeover"!

oh yea, nice.

lol, I only have 8 :) they're all in different stages of restoration. One day I'll post a group shot of my vise herd. I can't help that I keep finding good deals on vises that I don't own. Eventually as I restore them if needed, I will be selling them, however I'll be keeping at least 2 for myself. All depends on what I find in the next couple months! I totally blame this site for my (growing) collection!

Says the guy with not one, not two, but THREE specific vises as wanted's in his Sig... :spit:

Thanks Mr. b100.----I'm learning something new every day. While we are talking about Reeds, what does the R stand for. For instance, 204 R?

Stripped the Soderfors down today. Surprisingly easy to assemble and disassemble are these; One nut and two bolts, job done. You can probably guess why the existing paint job is going too. :D Few photo's to show the design and parts.

Fretters: very cool vise and i really like how simple it is. light duty or medium? let me guess maybe another shade of "purple"?

Ritz: looks like that one should be a keeper, but i guess it doesn't have one of your nice handles you make so I'd sell it too.

Grouseman: i love your picture posts, but i have no idea what you just posted. we need to get some more vise in chains pictures or are they out to pasture now eating some of the little vises you seem to buy for them to eat?

Andrew: i think you might have the vise vice, but you can't go too far wrong with those selections and prices. nice!!

I'd guess medium. Colour wise, not sure whether this one will be getting painted. If I manage to get my hands on some graphite powder before all of the bits are cleaned up, I might go with a Linseed/graphite paste and see how that looks. A sort of stove black finish but without any lamp black in it.

Drivesit.-----It is supposed to be a link to the thread (Reed 104 1/2 R Vise Purchase). Post #6.-----For some reason it's not picking up the link.-----It shows a stationary Reed with a R. B100 says it means Revision. Others say something else. I guess only Reed knows for sure, and they won't tell you nothing.

I once duplicated "Black Shellac" for an armour breast plate by straining shellac through cheesecloth filled with copier toner. Yes, the toner is toxic, but it was being sealed by the shellac, so would be fine unless you planned on eating it. It took 2-3 coats, but came out with a very nice gloss/semi-gloss finish that aged down to semi-flat with use.

It also helped me get rid of some useless toner that isn't used anymore. :D

CBRAXMAIER, That York looks good. The polish vise looks like it was made in India according to the screw retainer :dunno: I guess it is a later version of the FPU / Bison Nice job on both of them :D

Cuda: have you checked out Balane's multy colored vises? pin stripping??

Brax: those restores are awesome on the York and FPU. also wanted to thank you for posting that "little" Parker with the wine bottle on it the other day. is that one going to shine up like the two you just posted? it looks like it might take a can of paint just for the pipe jaws. good luck on the sales

Oldie: that hydraulic Wilton might be one of the nicest posted on this thread in a while and didn't remember seeing it before. thanks for sharing.

BC: good luck on the restore of the Wilton with the serious clampper

Ask for better pics??!?!?!? Why? At $10 it is an absolute nobrainer, in my neck of the woods that would not have lasted 30 seconds.

This looks like an old Athol ... for ten bucks?!?!

http://jonesboro.craigslist.org/tls/4344020140.html

I asked for some better pictures so we'll see. I have the feeling I'm going to need a much bigger workbench by the time my addiction has been fed. Ya'll have ruined me!!!

But I don't regret it one bit.

Its an Athol but a light duty model. It's almost identical to Prentiss' Gipsy vise but still well made. You can't go wrong for 10.00. It will cleanup well and work great on a toolbox. I would guess the jaws to be 3" or less
