Fretters, I'm just as guilty of that as anybody on here. I've posted links to E-bay and Craigslist in the past not realizing that all future readers were going to see is a blank on E-bay where the photo use to be, and (''This posting has been deleted by its author'') on Craigslist. So from now on I am going to try to remember to post a picture that will remain in the posting long after the ad is history. I work from a PC so it's easier for me to do that, but I don't know how you would do it from a smart phone.

This Yost vise has the worst castings I have ever seen after I got the 1/8" thick brushed on paint off. Pits and holes everywhere ! I had to make a swivel lock assembly because it was missing. It does work pretty smooth but it is still a 10 footer.

Aqua: nice save with that big Yost. by the way did the military give you a 150 pound limit for an extra passenger and you shipped home the vise and your wife is still trying to get home? by the way it looks like you are a new member to the GJ group and glad to have another good guy in the group.

Andrew: are you in double figures yet and happy to hear you have one of Zoomie's wiltons. Bee careful with the back pin taking it apart and your should have a great user or sell and buy a few more.

GetRid: does that make 100 yet? another quality restore and your vise **** is the best. can't even see those casting issues you mentioned with that perfect restore. do you have a before picture?

Mav: looks like a couple good vises. is the old one a saw blade vise or a wood vise? would like to see that on a bench with it gripping something. it looks harder to set up than to use.

Kevin: thanks again for the great screw thread tutorial with pictures. your the best.

thanks Mav

yours looks a lot cooler with the casting of the maker's name on it and a lot older too. I guess you could stick a thin board in it too for some fine tuning. NICE:thumbup:

Beautiful job GETRIDAONE. I especially like the diamond gem. Only one like that I've ever seen. Glad to hear you say that about the complexion on your Yost. My 208 on page 554 looks really bad but has the smoothest movements of any vise I've ever had, big or small. I guess you can't have both. Take a look and see if yours was as bad as mine. Incidentally, mine still looks that bad. Haven't touched it yet.

After today I'm in the double digits. Thanks to zoomieport I picked up a monster vise today, it caused me to show up late to work because I knew it wouldn't last at the crazy price they listed it. It weighs at least 150 lbs. I can't take pictures until after work so I won't ruin the surprise with anymore details!! :)

va, It looks as bad as yours, there is one place on the bottom that looks like a honeycomb. I gave it that "Gem" tattoo to dress it up, it wasn't there originally. I had forgotten how big that Yost is :shocking:

Andrew, You need to see about treatment for your vise addiction. Hurry up with those pictures, I need a fix

drivesitfar, "does that make 100 yet?" I haven't updated my spread sheet recently but I think it is close. :dunno:

Why in the world would I want to do that!? I get my 'treatment' every time I pick up an old American vise, every vise I've bought I've decided on its future color scheme on the drive home :p

Here's another little Craftsman painted in ugly colors. I post these as a public service for what colors to not paint your vises.

Edit: I'm just kidding, I actually like these offbeat colors on the older Craftsmen.

Went to an auction today and picked up this old woodworking vise for $12. Works great but no name listed anywhere on it that I could find. Fixed section has 3A stamped and the adjustable section has 10B and 3B stamped. Weighs 20 lbs. Anyone have an idea of the age or who made it? I have never seen one quite like it.

SGS: i'd buy your handle for the $12 and pay shipping to Seattle. that is very cool wood vise. not sure who made it either, but with that handle and the square nuts is screams early 1900's and probably more in the 1800's. Maybe B100 has one or a picture of one to offer.

Andrew: so i second the motion that if you mention a big vise and don't show it you will have heck to pay and not be able to buy another vise for a day. if now pics ready how about a preview with a make and jaw size? so since you got us waiting don't forget the weight and all the specs.

Nine: those old Cole vises have their uses and you can search and you might see some have a drill press attachment too. good hunk of old steel.

Balane: nice work and looks great on the stump and was it red originally under that nice paint job?

It's a 6" Desmond Stephan. It's a big boy, I'm out of work in an hour and I'll post pictures!

I also happen to like that color scheme on the Craftsman. Looks great in my opinion.

First let me say YOU ****!

What you have there is a Sheldon "rapid acting" vise. Very nice and sought after by woodworkers of a certain ilk. They are a pain in the rear to fit to the bench (due to large draft angles and protrusions) but they work well. Mine is mounted and used regularly - no pounding or cranking on stuff mind you, but they do hold tight enough for sawing, chisel work etc. If you decide to flip it on eBay, it should bring in something around $100.

Andrew, Did you get this one?

Yes I did. Thanks for ruining the surprise! However, I was incorrect about the jaw size. It's 5 3/4", I can't put it on the scale at the moment but it nearly broke my back carrying it up the stairs by myself. Now it's stuck on my kitchen counter lol

Without further delay...

The jaw pads are 'okay' I'll probably grind them smooth. I need to find a new set of serrated ones though. KMScott?

Also the only other issue is that one end of the handle is a nut welded on, so I need to get a new handle made, any ideas?

I forgot to mention that I'd have never gotten it without Mike (zoomieport) he texted me and gave me the heads up. And for everyone wondering. I did not pay the $175 they listed it for.

Picked up this Superior No. 44 from a customer (free)- he said they'd never used it; prior owner left it in their basement & they moved in in '69. Just about brand new as far as dings goes. Going to blow it apart, paint it & flip it. What color you guys like for this one?

Sorry Andrew, C.BRAXMAIER had a bead on it and we was trying to figure out what it was, I guessed a Desmond Stephon. Nice vise and I guess you earned a you ****. Jaws for that one are priced double even with the GJ discount.

Nice!

I've looked for a long time to find a big Simplex vise, but they're pretty scarce around these parts. Again, awesome score.

No one even had a chance, I live about 10 miles from them :p

And if you're serious about the double price thing, it is what it is, but if you can / will make them please shoot me a PM and tell me the cost. If necessary I can mail you a jaw pad to work with. If not I'll have to source them elsewhere but as I said when we last spoke I'd like to keep business in the GJ community if I can. I can't even find another picture of this vise, so I imagine they're somewhat rare, or I just **** at searching.

Andrew,
i'm sure that big vise is going to hurt your back again taking it off the counter so you might want to get my address and i'll Paypal you what you paid for it plus shipping because i feel sorry for you.

just an FYI if you want to keep it Ritzblitz has made some awesome handles for other member's vises and has a few examples on vises a few days or a week ago.

thanks for not teasing us overnight even if Kevin guessed correctly.

be careful you'll be in triple digits by summer at the rate you are going, but it isn't all bad owning a vise from every old company until you pick your favorites.

I will be keeping it, unless I find a bigger one that I like better! Zoomieport mentioned RitzBlitz, I'll have to get in contact with him because I definitely want a new handle! As it is I keep telling myself that I'll sell them once I restore them but I'm not sure it's going to happen.. Who knows! At this point I'd only sell if it was going to get me a better vise or one that I'm looking for, I suppose I'd be open to doing some trading with members here as well. I can't even fathom how much this thing would cost to ship, easily more than I paid for it I'm sure.

Andrew: Here's a tip you might need to save your back and help you find out if you are buying a good big vise. since the back slides sometimes were used as anvils they might be flared and maybe have a crack or the beginning of one.

Just turn out the dynamic jaw all the way out of the static and you'll know if you have a decent vise and you can inspect the screw. Also check for welds and cracks. if everything checks out here is the best part.

carry it to your car in "TWO" pieces. You can also ship those big uns in "TWO" pieces in separate boxes unless you have them shipped like VA and others do to their homes on pallets.

nice find and i'm sure we'll be hearing from you again soon with another find soon.

Hello everyone this is my first post although I have been lurking and admiring everyone's vises for the past few months. I currently have an older 500N mounted on my bench. I say older but have not yet taken it apart to find the date but I have had it for several years. The reason for my post today is to show the two I picked up today from the local scrap yard for scrap price of $12.33 for the pair. As you can see 1 is a wilton and the other an Athol. Can anyone help with the age of them. I would like to restore them both along with my 500N in the near future. Since finding the Garage Journal and this thread I'm addicted ......any help with the age of the two I picked up today would be appreciated.

Thanks...
