I also think its a 9 inch opening, not jaw width. still worth it if not busted....

Why do you think its sold? Did you buy it?

OOPS, my fault! The first time I clicked the link it didn't work. I just tried again and the ad is still up, sorry!
Nope, not mine, 3,000 (ok, 2,300) miles is my limit!

And as I said, raised letters in castings cost money, even a fraction of a cent means something when you are dealing with tens or hundreds of thousands of units. And we are dealing with sand molds here, not an expensive medium to alter.

JKB

Great point. With all of the useful information on this site, does anyone have any idea of production quantities of any vises? I know we're not dealing with items that would have lot numbers and certainly not individual serial numbers, but how about annual sales quantities from any of the manufacturers?

And this gets the understatement of the year award...

Oldldh,; Everybody on this thread is in the "Door Stop" restoration business...

Hey, wait a minute! I seem to beat mine up as fast as I fix them. I don't let it bother me. It's a vise ( or vice GBR, et. al. ) after all. :D :D :D

All I've done to mine so far is set it on the bench and install the new nylon jaw covers. I saw that Billy added a note to it (as he's inclined to do). It says

"I have now replaced Billy as Leanna's favorite vice. Love, Reed"

Filson - Do you have any high-res images of your sign? I think I might try to get one printed, I think Reed has some logo artwork on their site so would help out some.

I don't, and I can't take any better pics with my phone really. I can get you in contact with the gentlemen that made me my sign, if your interested, he may still have the design saved that he drew up. My sign is heavy gauge aluminum (same stuff as road signs) - let me know.

Hey bud,

I checked the graveyard and don't have any spare Craftsman 519X vise parts laying around. If i come across any, ill let you know asap.

Hey caddy,

Thanks for keepin' an eye out for me, and checking your stash!:beer:

Someone bought that Reed 208 on Ebay...

One of us??????????????????

I bought it. I'm going to buy each 208 I see and clamp a piece of dynamite in it and blow it to hell, until I have the last surviving 208 in the world. Then my quest will continue once I find a 209, and a 5198... Buahaha.:evil::evil:

 I do like the way you think Mr. Filson. But I have just one request: Video. :D

Oh, and if you can pass along the guy's name who did your Reed sign I'd admire you even more.

IIRC a while back someone mentioned that the largest bullet style wilton made was 8" so I highly doubt that one is 9" jaw width. Also based on the scale of the paver shown below. That is a sweet paint job though. I agree that it is a 6" C3. Still massive from what I hear.

A 208 would flick off your dynamite like a fly.----After a nuclear holocaust, the only thing that will be left is **** roaches and 208s.

Oh, and if you can pass along the guy's name who did your Reed sign I'd admire you even more.

I'll pm you the guys name. To be completely upfront - the quality of the sign was not quite up to my hopes. It looks great from a few feet away, but if your as **** as me and get up close to inspect it, you can see "where the work was done" if that makes sense.

The sign looks great on the wall, and should last for decades. I'm not sure what stuff he used to lay it out, but you can faintly feel the edges of all the design on the sign. I suppose that could be normal, but I thought it'd all feel glassy as if it were a single picture beneath glass, ya know?

Though the guy makes signs for a living for local businesses and stuff, I wouldn't call it a 'professional shop' really. But the quality is pretty damn good for a guy doing stuff on his own. Having said that - I do hope you support him and his family and have a sign made by him. He's a genuinely great guy and is very honest. He had to let me go in the middle of a phone call because him and his wife were pulling over to help someone who was broken down on the side of the road lol. Pretty cool guy. I'll pm the contact info.

Already have one of them, gotta search for 2 more.

Oh, the humanity !

Maybe I was a bit out there... Perhaps I should just destroy a 5198 when I see it, to vent my frustrations about my 5196 mess up.

A 208 would flick off your dynamite like a fly.----After a nuclear holocaust, the only thing that will be left is **** roaches and 208s.

Hmm, if that's the case... perhaps we should build a GJ nuclear bunker out of 208's!?!?

And, even though we're still unpacking stuff (I still don't have all my vises out, a few are hidden somewhere in all the ****) I decided to take a pic of my family of vises that I do have out. More to come, when I get my **** out of Idaho. :bounce: I'll take a bit better pics the next time around too haha.

Here's a preview of the Parker 88 that I've spent the last week working on! The color is Oil Rubbed Bronze, I actually like it quite a lot. The letters / numbers will be done in white to add some contrast. More to follow in a couple days! :)

Hey guys just got a wilton this afternoon looking to get a new center bolt for it but cant find any parts it is red and has" 856 made in usa" on the side. I am assuming it is discontinued. Would anyone happen to know anything about finding parts for this? By the way I have tried ten parts places listed on Google. Thanks.

LOL! Just remember, that I did give my word that if I somehow find a 5198 - it's in the mail to you. So try not to be too treacherous.

And the 209 and 5198 must be living somewhere, the hunt must continue. :rocker:

I guess I'll post mine up. It's a 1968 C1 Wilton. I paid $150 for it. Sand blasted, and painted it with a Plstikote's ''Rebuilder's Cast Finish''.

Sorry for the crappy pic's. My camera doesn't like me anymore.

Here's a link to restoration.

That Plastikote looks like some good stuff. If it can stand up to brake fluid, that says a lot. Did you use any primer or go right over bare metal? I also like your idea of using a cigarette **** for the lettering. Nice job and thanks for the pointers.

I had asked here, and I called Valspar, the makers of platikote,, and everyone said as long as the metal is clean, no primer need.

I think it turned out great. My camera will not do it justice.

Well, I mocked everything up this morning to make sure everything is smooth, I can move the jaw with just my pinky and that's with zero grease anywhere.

Great looking Parker. I have to ask the paint questions. What brand, what color, primer, no primer? Nice job.
