Great looking Parker. I have to ask the paint questions. What brand, what color, primer, no primer? Nice job.

This should answer all your questions. :)

Re: Unknown Wierd Vise

Went to roughly 100 garage sales last Friday---it was the annual neighborhood sale and 200 houses signed up for it. Got a load of stuff, including a Fender USA Jazz Bass, but nothing in the way of tools and it was getting late.

Saw this little guy and bought it mainly to fill that hunger. Have no idea who made it, but I'm old and this vise is probably TWICE my age. Any ideas??

Not sure on the make of the little vise - but congrats on the fender jazz! I've been keeping my eyes open for one locally.

Andrews big Parker is a hard act to follow but I'll throw mine in anyway. I haven't painted anything with winkle paint but a steering collar for one of my Pontiacs. It was in the paint cabinet so I gave it a try. The little Rock Island cleaned up and came out OK

Well, I mocked everything up this morning to make sure everything is smooth, I can move the jaw with just my pinky and that's with zero grease anywhere.

Getrid, real nice before and after. Looking at the before, I couldn't see the nice vice you finished with

That looks great. What paint did you use? Any tips?

Picked this up tonight at a sale for $20. I don't know to much about this Wilton so any information would be appreciated. I took a photo of the serial number if that helps.

casting part number, not serial number, date code on bottom of slide indicating when warranty ran out.

good score on the vise i don't have photo bucket or no way to draw a circle and point with an arrow but on the pic you took the close up of it looks like there might be a crack in the rear stationary jaw right under the serrated jaw maybe someone else can see it also hopefully i am wrong

Man, I love this thread. I can't find ANYTHING locally for the past several months that I have been looking. Everything on EBAY seems to be generally well overpriced, based on the prices I see discussed here.

I must have missed some of this thread---is this the Parker 88 from Naperville IL with the cracked front jaw? If so, how did it get fixed??

Ebay comes and goes. It just takes patience. You'll find the occasional lulls or the odd one where stuff goes for a fraction of what it normally would, but you just have to stay on the ball.

Patience bud, all it is. Check CL religiously (seriously, like several dozen times a day...) Garage sales, auctions, etc can all be great places. I've had the most luck at garage sales, personally.

I've gone weeks and weeks without finding a single vise for sale locally that was worth of damn. And I've thrown two vintage big vises on the bench in the back of the truck within a few minutes of each other, hitting some yard sales. A 5" Reed and a 6" Parker, paid $40 for one and $39 for the other lol.

Point is, take your time, keep saving up for when the big score chance comes along, and than strike when the time is right.

I believe that means it's pre 1972.

Either that, or January 1972. Then, the debate rages on as to whether that means the manufacture date, or the warranty expiration date. I tend to think it means the manufacturing date since it doesn't have "GUAR EXP" stamped with it. Either way, that's a great vintage vise.

Bullets like yours for $20 may be the deal of your lifetime depending on where you live. That's a 350S from that era dated 1-72 (if someone hasn't already told you) Its been very lightly used and is in excellent condition. You could probably flip that vise and get 10 times what you have into it. Its not as beefy as its successor that Wilton started making in about 1975 but honestly, I prefer the earlier ones with the smaller anvil. If you use that vise, don't do any excessive amount of work on that anvil. Its cast iron, like the vise, and not hardened. My full time vises are not painted, just lubed. One very nice score!

For you guy's that might want to resurface your anvil. I just did mine.

Just wanted to show how the anvil area I resurfaced turned out.

I used a belt sander. I was really nervious when I first pulled the trigger. I did manage to touch the vise in a couple of spot's when the belt walked. But touch up was no big deal. Then I thought I had better stop. I thought I was rounding the edge's. But I remember I checked it with a big washer last night and it rocked. Now it doesn't rock anymore.

Before and after pic's. I know we shouldn't really use the anvil, but all I'll do with it is flatten washer's or something. You can see in the before pic that the edge's was rounded. So I don't think I hurt it. I think it looks much better now.

I wonder if you can get that wrinkle paint in "Arrest-Me-Red"???

That would cover a multitude of minor sins...

I shall investigate that...

Both of the black vises are very well done...

I was at a clients shop today and saw this nice Wilton having a workout. They repair and maintain large trucks. This Wilton is easily holding the hydraulic ram.

It's in the old hardware store...

Right next to the Craftsman 5198...:willy_nil:willy_nil

Right above the Reed 209...:eyecrazy::eyecrazy:

I am looking for a paint that meets the "eyeball pounding" requirement...:rocker::rocker:

I've seen several, but, so far, everything's a bit wimpy...
