yes you are on it today NINE. first the mag drill find and secret to fixing it and now knowing that i went over to the "dark side" of GJ to grab some pictures of what i would like my little cart to look like.

i call it the dark side because every time i go over there i'm ready to move, buy a new car, re do my shop and garage or build one. there is way to many cool and expensive things over on that side. not that there are not over here too, but that side you can add a zero or two or three zeroes on most items compared to our tools.

this cart has now found a new home because i was emailed by a fellow GJ member since he found out that i owned it and he'll be picking it up one day soon. he will finish the restore and post pictures when he is able to.

A hazet is still on my radar, but until i get some stuff off the floor it would just sit there staring at me.

Not sure if I ever posted a photo of this old Cornwell box I picked up...
Love it... wish I could find more just like her!

Cool box, is that a 26"x15" or 33" wide box? Looks like 26" from the pic, but wasn't sure. :headscrat

Here is my first toolbox, possibly late 1960s, probably early 70s. It's never been restored in any way, the red on the tray is either some kind of primer, or some red trays were painted Craftsman gray after the fact.

This baby was carried around in a car trunk with a few rust holes behind the rear wheels for a number of years, as well as being stored on and slid across a concrete garage floor. Today it sits empty, except when I load a few tools in it for a rescue trip.

Here you can see the scar from when I almost backed over it with my first car. The spare tire well hanging down hit it, the noise made me stop.

Found this site while researching the logo on this recent acquisition. Tough call which thread to put it in and opted for "Vintage." I have wanted to find a bigger box to replace one I have but wasn't actively looking then this popped up. Though I was really considering a wagon as my next purchase, space was a factor and this had a cool factor. It's 33" and the top box must weigh at least 150 ball busting pounds. The only minus is that it has friction glides and when loaded takes some effort to open. While "minimal," the $325 was much more than I usually spend at a garage sale. Have two other "vintage" sets of which one now needs to go and several other boxes.

Very nice!!

This is a Snap-on KR-61 Superchest (31"W) and a K-200 roller (thanks Mr.Ric for IDing it). Looking for a lock for it and will be restoring the badges on the roller cab.

Beautiful. What is the background story? Family member, or did you just happen to purchase it from someone? They look to be in good condition from the pics.

Those look terrific!

I would want to date your 61 a little earlier, the fancy bling handles on the inside combined with the american lock co. on the outside would put it before 53, like this one, assuming everything is original.

Cool. Thanks MrRic for sharing your knowledge and pics of your beautiful boxes!!!! Makes perfect sense now seeing the deeper red of the roller and how the handles do not lineup from top box to bottom.

Earlier today I found this 1978 Snap On KR-273 at a swap meet. Initially I thought it was just a wall cabinet but after doing a little research I found it was actually an end cab.

nice find, those are actually pretty rare

i have a couple of KR274's and a kr272

The seller at the swap said that if she had a dollar for everyone that walked by and touched it she would have made more money than she did selling it. They had been asking $50, I offered $40 and they countered $45. I gave it some thought and walked around for a while before going back to buy it.

When I started to do some research on it I was very surprised how little information there was about these models.

Now I just need to find an older roll cab to stick it on.

Actually with the metal carry handle I think it is early 1960's.

Very nice, good deal to boot. I've seen people mount those on walls as well. What is the condition of the bottom? Is it solid and just missing paint?

Since we are on the topic of old side cabs. Here is a odd duck I picked up a little while back. 1984 IIRC. Pics are as received, dirty. Will need to take some new ones as it has since been cleaned up. I do have the door handle, but had to take the door handle off to get it in my car. I've actually removed the door now that it is put in place. Thankfully the PO kept the key and drawer liners in every drawer since new. Not a spec of rust, for once

I didn't see that earlier. Very cool setup. That should be about the same build quality as the well respsected 33" matco box. Both of which were built by waterloo. Does the bottom drawer have dual slides on it? Black retainer clips on the end of the slides? Check the bottom frame rail (red) for a date stamp.

Yes to both questions. I'll check for a date stamp when time and space allows.
Thanks.

Wow, I really like those. They look like they can work great as a side cabinet or mobile tool station. Are those rare and did other companies make them also.

Have a good one, Gerard

Updated pics of my set-ups.

And another to add to the collection...

IMG_20140519_211740.jpg

From what I can tell it's a vintage Huot drill index. I couldn't find a date on it so I am only assuming it's older by the knobs/pulls, slides and badge.

I rescued this sad soul from a sale where i also found a new craftsman tool carry box still in it's original box that was dated 1995. seller was close to 100 years old and had some pretty cool stuff. i guess somebody grabbed the tray off of this little guy. it has the old color of Craftsman, but i can't quite make out the label.

anybody know where i can get a new leather handle for it after i remove the rust with Simple Green?

Brent: Jeff Moss found one of those and posted i think on the garage sale thread. very cool and i'd love to own one too.

Any leatherworker should be able to re-build that handle for you. If you don't know of any near you, try contacting horse people and ask about Tack Shops that do saddle repair. Save as much of the leather as you can so that they can use it as a pattern.

Not mine, but I haven't seen a six drawer version of the small wards cabinets before.

Duro-Industro used that label in the late 30s and early 40s.

I bought one like that at an "estate" sale years ago with bits, I forget what else I got, maybe a 16" Craftsman chainsaw, $5.00 for each. A friend/realtor of the estate was doing the sale as a favor and her boyfriend was in charge of the garage. I'll pull it out and post a pic.

Really trying to get organised this year, hence the new to me chest/cabinet purchase so repacking the garage. This Kennedy was a long ago purchase at a sale around the corner, got it on the last day of the sale for $5.00. Has some unusual features I haven't seen on others I've seen. Handles are on the side and the combo lock may or may not be factory.

Have a good one, Gerard

They were not as common as the standard 3 drawer side boxes. That one is a KR288, 8 drawer. The KR274 was a 3 drawer, 1 shelf then bottom, and then they made a KR289 which had 9 drawers. They are neat and lots of storage but the door is a PITA IMHO. You have to get it past 90° otherwise the drawers will hit. I have since took the door off and hung it on the wall for safe keeping.

Most of the truck brands back then made something similar, but I think that was the only one with all drawers :dunno: They made larger side cabs for the larger boxes. Matco and Mac made a ~6 drawer one shelf or something like that.

Honestly if someone wants a good side box the HF 7 drawer is extremely hard to beat for the $/quality/availability. I own this one, because well. Right place right time and it was alot cheaper than the HF side box. ;)

Zkling, thanks for the info. I also thought of the HF side cabinets. They would work but I would make them mobile and mount DP and band saw to top. Those measurements would work to put 2 side by side. Its just a money issue and plus the fact those are way cooler than the HF sides.

O, agree. It looks much better next to my KR637/657 than a HF side box would, plus was cheaper to boot. IIRC it is 15" wide, 18" deep and ~32" tall. However with that said, I feel the HF side is built a bit better than this one and much better than the standard 3 drawer KR274. The HF unit is quite stout with BB slides on each drawer, these are all friction. And while the larger drawers have the heavier slides, they are still a friction setup. Now one of the KR292's which are technically a match for the KR657 are probably a different story.

Edit. I'll add the torsional stiffness of the full drawer version is many times greater than that of the 3 drawer version as they lack a full 2nd inner wall for the drawer slides. I tried to use a 3 drawer as a drill press base and it just wasn't very confidence inspiring for my liking.
