A question for you old drill press guys.
Has anyone come up with a way to install a drill press table
counter weight?
I have an old Craftsman drill press that an ol friend traded to me.
The table is heavy has hell and all it has is a clamp that locks to
the main column, when you break the lock loose you'd better have
a hand under the table or down it goes.
I thought about mounting a pulley up next to the motor and a heavy
weight connected by a cable through the pulley and down to the table.
Has anyone tried something like this and do you have some photos?
If I can get the pulley system to work I just might try mounting a
Bodine gear motor at the bottom to raise and lower the table...
Humm, that'd be pretty neat huh.

Thanks.

The counterweight and pulley method would work fine. Some put bottle jacks or similar under the table too. Personally, I like counterweights. An age old, tried and tested method which works extremely well.

By eck, I'm surprised the front half of that table hasn't snapped off. That's an impressive arc. :D Nice machine. :)
LOL I know right ? The guy told me it's probably drilled a "gozillion" holes in its day. It's a runner. I dont know that much about it yet, but I'll be digging into it over the summer. I picked up a really cool ole Renaud punch press and a roller bender the same day, will take delivery on them this weekend I hope...My wife's gonna have a cow when she see's what I drug up this time ;)

I picked up this Craftsman by King-Seeley at auction today. Needs to be cleaned up and there is a broken piece that connects the two front pulleys but otherwise it seems solid. Now off to find out whatever I can about it.

Ritz:i watched part of your youtube video the other day and remembered to see the rest of it now. that is one heckuva nice looking old DP and looks like it will serve you well once you get the power like you want and some of the things mentioned in your video tweaked on it. thanks for taking the time to make the video and for showing us how it works.:thumbup:

IT:looks like you got a deal on a good old Craftsman.

All:I saw this one on my local craigslist that the seller wants $450 for. it has the right look for all the guys that read and post up on this thread and anybody close to Tacoma, Wa might want to check it out. http://seattle.craigslist.org/tac/tls/4495188643.html

Thanks, I think so. I've learned that the broken part that is still attached at the top of the second pulley is (was) the control link for the Vari-Slo variable speed attachment. It's also missing the Vari-Slo control arm and knob and the nameplate and associated hardware. I'm on the hunt.

Itenerant, there is a link somewhere here to the vari-slo pulley set up you have on the DP, great find, they are usually missing. The broken parts will be hard to find but may be easily fabbed, depending what is broken/missing.

Thanks Nine, I've found quite a bit of info about it. I was thinking the same as you that fabbing the parts would be easier than trying to find them.

I picked up this WT yesterday for 45.00. Needs a pulley and a good clean up. Motor is smooth as can be, it's been rewired, and no "extra" holes in the plate.

So here is the finished drill press. This is my first old drill press so I'm really proud of it. It runs so smoothly. I picked up a magnetic LED light for under the bottom behind the chuck. Wow that works great for a light.

I picked up a Wilton Power Arm Jr and a small vise for $50 bucks today and mounted them under the vise. I do a lot of small work and this should work perfectly for me.

So now I only need a BIG vise for my worktop to replace my old Ludell.

Jody, there is no way to tell make with the shoddy "guard" they have on it, but it does look like a mini Camelback. If so, and not completely worn out, worth the $35 if you want that style of DP around. I would just for the entertainment value alone; I'd fix it up and use it "just because"

I tried to get them to send me some photos of the pulley setup behind the "guard" but I haven't heard back. I think I may just grab it for the fun of it because I'd like a small drill press to tinker with. I'll post more photos when I get some.

picked up the drill today. Its actually much better than it looks in the pic execpt for the upstand pole which is very badly pitted from rust and the bed doesnt slide up and down, but all the stuff on the head that matters is in really good condition. the motor seems to have a serial date of 1949! ive stripped out most of the gear off the head in prep for paint stripping and rebuild. because it is so old everything comes apart with screws/bolts etc no roll pins or stamped parts in site.

Slydit, what make is that DP?

it's a "champion" brand. made in England. the only identification is the 1/3rd HP motor which is made in Canada and has a serial of 4/11/49 so i'm guessing thats 1949. although the motor is non original too by the looks of the mounting holes

i spent the day stripping the paint off and removing all the parts which were all in very good condition. the worst part is the stand pole. i may get it machined down and fit a sleeve to the table.

so the big question is.....what colour should i paint it? i dont like the silver(non original) colour..i was thinking hammerite green or blue?? I love the red but its not in keeping with the age of it i think.

Because of this forum, I'm now in the market for my first old drill press.

Yeah, I know.. when the zombie invasion hits, I'll line up for that as well..... but it won't be as cool as restoring/owning an old drill press.

Anyway, a couple of questions, since this forum is filled with fellows smarter than me regarding this subject.

Apart from design, trying to figure out pros/cons between Craftsman models from the 40s and 60s. Both are cool, but have space for only one right now.

And where were old Jet drill presses made?

Attached are three links of the drill presses that I'm looking at.

And thanks in advance; this website is ridiculously awesome.

The eralir DPs were in general slightly smaller, more like the mod 80 of there 50's 60's distance from chuck center to post was less and the posts were often smaller.

I don't think the green or blue (or red) hammered is in keeping with it's era either, but, maybe, - Black Hammered? You can still cover a multitude of sins, but it's more in keeping with the early metalworking tools...

your probably right.who'd have thought choosing a colour for a drill would be so hard . :dunno:
As theres not much to this drill i kinda wanted a bit of bling to make it pop....might go hammered grey or black.
