Yeah those MC sets come in uber handy.

Latest purchase: SO 1/4 Deep metric.

The final set required. Still need a 4mm thou to finsh the 1/4 deep and a slack hand full of loose sockets to finish the bed.

That foam setup is awesome. How did you do it? Or where did you get it if it's something you can buy??

SO makes them pre cut for certain kits. You can also buy the foam yourself and make your own. The kits above are sold/marketed with the aircraft guys in mind where F.O. and tool control are critical.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

'A place for everything, everything in its place'

I designed the beds myself around current inventory using a CBP, A company in Germany did the cut outs.

That was 4 year ago now.

You can buy closed cell foam and often do the cutouts yourself. It's common for "custom" camera and instrument cases, where you buy the case then cut out the spots you need to protect your device.

Yeah you can do the cut outs yourself for sure.

But if you want precise cut's, you need the help of a computer. I assume they use some kinda CNC cutter.

Yeah no doubt the high accuracy and complexity cuts are better via a cnc. That being said, you can get a rough facsimile by hand for a good price. Like anything DIY you pay for it in time and labor. Trace the outline of the tool on the foam. Then cut the hole like you would a piece of plywood. Usually the high density foam handles this well. Just use a scroll saw (having a brainfart, I think that's the name) with a fine toothed blade.

When I turned wrenches on military jets I bought some foam, laid out my tools, used a marker to trace the outline of the tools, and lastly took an exacto knife to cut out the foam. Looked good enough for me but was a PITA. As I grew my tool collection I had to redo my shadowing. Same set up except this time I used a hot knife (see http://www.stanleysupplyservices.com/hakko-ft801-31-thermal-knife-blade-wirestripper-with-hot-knife-blades/p/477-915 instead of an exacto. Was a lot faster cutting looked better too. I wish I had pictures but I no longer have that box.

I know that hot knife is expensive, we had several shop thermal strippers with a knife accessory that I had access too so there wasn't any additional cost to me.

I'm planning on using a trim router to cut my foam.

I like the foam idea. Looks clean and organized as hell. Especially since I'm OCD. But I just don't see it being practical after awhile or as you get more tools what do u do? Seems like you are wasting a lot of space aswell. Guess it works great if u have a big box to tool collection ratio

When i make my foam holders, i will squeeze and maximize the tools as tight as they can fit.

I believe efficiency in getting your work done fast will result from this type of system. IMO it's not necessarily a better system for maximum storage.

using Canadian Tires current 40% off Channellock sale
had Home Depot match & beat, so ended up with these for 50% off
would only allow exact matches (7 1/2" didn't work on 7 3/4" pliers for example)
but I may try my local HD in a few days to see if they will overlook, or miss, that stipulation.

That foam is required for Aviation mechs/techs. And we usually don't need as many tools as car techs either. Only need SAE (I haven't worked on a jet that was metric, doesn't mean they aren't out there). But arranging tools so that you have room to grow is important. Someone told me to buy a box bigger than needed then use as little space in the foam as possible. I didn't listen and had to repeat cutting foam several years later....

We have toolboxes that are shadow boxed at work for FOD. I have to say I would never do it in a box that did not require it. It is very nice to just look to see if tools are missing but IMO it is more trouble then it is worth.

Went into Lowes to check on pocket door slides and came out with this. Kobalt 10 Piece Plier set for 30 bucks and 2 piece self adjusting locking pliers for 6.50.

The locking pliers seem gimicky, but for 6.50 on clearance I will get about anything.

The other set is alright for 30 bucks, they seem well built but the quality doesn;t seem as high as Craftsman, the price was right for my needs though and this is much better than the mismatched set of odds and ends el cheapo pliers I currently use. I don't use pliers much at work anyway so this will be fine for me for years.

The attached are some of my new arrivals over the last month or so.

First up is a Kennedy Top Chest that I picked up for $40. I do have a new lock for it, and I will be cleaning it up before I load it. I have to figure out some way of keeping it from moving around on the Kobalt roller it's on though...

The next pic is my first GladiatorWorks GearBox, one of the 30" welded units. I picked it up from Sears on the recent sale, and have two more coming from Lowe's. I also got two of the hooks for haning the hose and shovels.

Next up are two Husky middle boxes that I picked up on clearance at HD. They are almost perfect for my needs, although I would have really preferred a 5 or 6 drawer middle chest, but nobody seems to make such a thing, especially not at $80 total. I have the two units bolted together, but will need to figure out a good way of anchoring it to the unit so having more than two drawers open invoke a gravity storm. There are 12mm (aka 1/2") Baltic Birch spacers between the units, necessary because the units won't nest together.

Now we get to the smaller tools:

First up are my first Knipex tools. Of course, two of them are in Craftsman suits, but I'm okay with that. The Cobras and MiniBolt cutters were scored recently due to a Hot Deals thread.

Included in that pic is a new pair of Channellock Needle Nose pliers. Unlike most of the small tools here, these were actually purchased due to a specific and immediate need. If my Craftsman NN pliers ever show back up, they'll be able to warm the bench nicely, the CL's have the starting job.

Second pic is of some new wrenches. A set each of the Husky Quadbox pairs (one Metric, on SAE). These will likely be my first grab on wrenches, and should be sufficient for about 1/2 of my wrench useage. The other wrench in there is a 3/4" CM (USA) combi. I recently got a nused (new to me used) compressor and found myself w/o a wrench for hooking up the air lines, as my SAE's only went up to 11/16". I was able to use an adjustable, but the swing available was minimal.

Third pic is my plier drawer and the divider made based on the thread here at GJ. I made a slight improvement, radiusing the top edges of the dividers so they won't bite me when I reach in. The plier drawer is the lower drawer of the top Husky unit in the preceding post.

Last is a set of Vise-Grip Locking Wrenches, Made in USA, NOS, which I got for $15, based on the feedback to my Q? at GJ. The packaging is crumpled because I had to fit it into a bag on my dual purpose m/c. Copywrite on the packaging was either '97 or '98. :bounce:

Where did you get these? I've been looking for a 1/4" ratchet kit but they seem to be the same price everywhere. A free battery would sweeten the deal though.

Next up:

Some more wrenches, in this case, the Craftsman SAE Crossbeam set. For some reason, I just really like the look of these, and since they were on sale.... Had I known I was going to get these, I would have passed on the 3/4" CM in the prior post, as this set has a 3/4". Que sera sera....

Second pic is my storage solution for the new Crossbeams. I just cut down the packaging they came in.

Next three pics are of the screwdriver drawer. The Vessel (for my M/Cs), Craftsman Professional, and Husky screwdriver in there are all new this year. The Popular Mechanics hiding is from the bad ol' days when Wal Mart actually sold American made goods. Those PM screwdrivers are wonderful, made by Vermont American before they were acquired by Bosch. Sadly, they simply aren't made anymore, so ... the Craftsman Professionals. (I seem to have a knack for picking screwdrivers that go out of production....)

Also in the drawer is a Park Tool 3 Way Hex Wrench, a long nose marking pen and knife set from FastCap for their Kaizen foam which I'll be using for the measuring tools in my Rally Box.

I got them from CPO outlets. Got free shipping over $100.

I picked up the 3/8 version and paid extra for the battery. I know there has been a couple times they would throw in a free M12 battery with an M12 tool.

Wanted to get a few of the larger cman wrenches while I could still get USA. Found a 5 piece large box end set for $39.99 Item Number 00943092000. I didn't have anything larger than 5/8 x 3/4 and this set has...
3/4 x 7/8
15/16 x 1
1 1/16 x 1 1/4
1 1/8 x 1 5/16
1 7/16 x 1 1/2

I got tired of using my larger adjustables for the big nuts...

I also grabbed a set of USA made tap sockets. Tested these out... they are sweet. There is a rubber gasket that holds the tap above the square socket.

By the way... that ruler is 18 inches long.

So I had to pick up some hardware from an industrial supply place, and to my surprise I found out that they are a dealer of ever-elusive Gray Tools.. so naturally I couldn't resist.
Got this 32 tooth 3/8 ratchet and yeah this thing means business. Does not feel like a 32t at all.. smooth and solid with no slop whatsoever. I have a feeling this one will become my go-to. Wanna pick up the 1/2 drive soon too.

Also got this Grip On long nose and holy, these feel wayyy nicer than Vise Grips. Damn this site to hell.

Picked up a new multi tool from factoryauthorizedoutlet.com when they were having the $20 off $100 sale a couple weeks ago.

Also picked up a pair of the 3ah XRP batteries for under $100 with the same sale.. Really good deal!

Went to sears today and picked up a 5 drawer heavy duty base to start building a new bench.. On sale for $220.. Not bad. They also have the heavy duty 4 drawer for $169, I'll probably grab a couple of those as well..

I was kind of surprised when I got it, the box says made in the USA!
