I'm not understanding how anyone doesn't think that's just "stubby".

Maybe a stubby with a little, delicate body. Maybe one that shares head size/mechanism or a body with other ratchets of other sizes.... but it's still just a small stubby ratchet.

I had a hard time with it also but it's the head size that's smaller that makes the difference. Or so I'm told ;)

I thought that too until I got the Proto version. Trust me, a 3/8 in a 1/4 body will make you reevaluate how you use tools, how you live your life, absolutely everything will change. At first you think "what the hell, it's just a tool". Then you realize "wait no, it's not just a tool, it's a state of mind". Only at that point do you take your first step down the path to enlightenment. It probably sounds like I'm underselling it, but I'm not.

I have a SnapOn FM70 that I bought a L o n g time ago..

It is a true 1/4 drive ratchet with a 3/8 male drive.. total length is 4 3/8"

That little ratchet gets used allot.. This past weekend; it was paired to a SnapOn flare nut socket ... Regular flare nut wrenches were too long to get into a rather confined spot.

Post a pic if you ever get the time!
Looks like you can still buy a repair kit for it as well!

Heres a couple of pictures of the wright 3/8 in a 1/4 body that I got from epstiens. Have used it a couple of times. works very well in confined spaces. This was my first Wright ratchet and I was impressed.

I have one too--found it on the road in like new condition. I don't need/use mine much but when I do it's REALLY handy. Great little tool.

my Std 1/4" drive TM70b is 20 T. :dunno:

20 tooth in that one would be a headshaker for sure... this old FM70 is 30 clicks......Snappy put a kit in this ratchet about two years ago.
For ten bucks, it should be worth a try putting the same kit in your TM70B..

I have a flex head SK 1/4" ratchet that's 3/8" drive...very compact. I've had it for a while, but still haven't found a reason to use it yet...

This is a perfect situation, please allow me to interject, you are literally on the tipping point of enlightenment.

So you've faced a conundrum in the garage and are presented with a choice. Do you choose the 3/8 ratchet or the 3/8 in the 1/4 body? It's simple really, do you want to process that question, or do you want to question the process? One choice will provide you with an actionable solution to a complex problem, the other choice will lead to a complex solution to an actionable problem.

Is the answer clear? No? Good, then you are ready to learn and begin your journey...

Most major companies make them. I have a matco straight handled one but have seen snap on, sk, proto, Mac, and wright versions.

the first two pics are 3/8 drive compacts from sk and titan. the titan is a roto head and quite similar to the old sk tuff1 and palm control ratchets. i highly recommend it.

the second two pics are sk 3/8 drive stubby ratchets.

I have the Snap on FCF72, it wasn't cheap, but I couldn't get it from Craftsman (before China). Most of my specialty stuff is Snap-on because of that. It is really nice on the front wheel drive cars where everything is tight. It was worth it.

OK, the kit from SO came in: No plate, so things get more difficult...

I know Proto generally ships a plate with there kits, if SO does it was either omitted, or was deliberately left off so you can't "upgrade" an older 1/4" ratchet...

To make it even more difficult, the hole needs to be about 5.031 or so. the 3/8" hex was .496 corner to corner, if they had gone with that the hole could have been .500...

I'm still OK, as I have 3 17/32 drill bits (.53125), but :wtf:

FYI the back side hole (and the front of the 1/4" drive) was 3/8... :dunno:

Now I just have to decide which one to do.. Probably the only chromed one.

I also took a look at the Proto and dang its a close cal there too, except the back hole is oversize; maybe a press fit bushing onto the drive gear? :dunno: Something to think about.

:soapbox:

Well now I've done it: I broke the ****** plate. I set it up for drilling (which was not going to be easy) and I stupidly (in retrospect) set up an angle vise 90 deg up, got it centered and started drilling. The plate is hardened so I know I'm eating the edge of the bit as I go, and I snapped the little mother off. :tantrum2:

I'm not understanding how anyone doesn't think that's just "stubby".

Maybe a stubby with a little, delicate body. Maybe one that shares head size/mechanism or a body with other ratchets of other sizes.... but it's still just a small stubby ratchet.

Here is why:

Stubby SK 3/8: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000FAL450/?tag=atomicindus08-20

Stubby SK 3/8 flex: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00062LLP0/?tag=atomicindus08-20

Here Are the SK ratchets. The 3/8 is SK part number 45173. What I really would like is a small 1/4 drive SK roto ratchet!
RIP SK 3870. :(

Tm70c2 is the part# for the tm70b cover plate (1/4" drive) it would be nice if they sold the 3/8.

If you look for parts for the fm70 nothing comes up. Is that the correct part #

OK, a little better news:

The 3/8 drive plate IS available: FYI it is NOT a warranty part (I'm fine with that)

P/N: FC72-2 (For FC72 ratchet) and costs $7.55 (It does NOT appear on there web site, call Customer support to order)
The rebuild kit was $10, and was P/N RKRA70FMA.

So I'l be into the conversion for under $20.

I should have my part this time next week
