The first was an estate sale with lots of activity in the garage and I spotted this little tool box on the floor that no one was interested in.

Turns out its a 1935 Craftsman Hip Roof Box that should have had a tool tray and a couple different socket sets.

Thanks for the information on that box - I have one that was sans-handle and no sticker so I now know it's origin. It's sitting awaiting some love to get back into use.

Well, I went back to the estate sale from yesterday. No joy. I got into the basement where the tools were supposed to be this time, but the family had cleaned out most of them. The hand tools that were left were junk. The power tools and other stuff on the other hand ........

2 Barber chairs - NOT FOR SALE
small wood stove - NOT FOR SALE
Craftsman model 100 table saw - NOT FOR SALE
Craftsman model 150 Drill Press (in excellent shape) - NOT FOR SALE
Littleton 3" vise mounted to bench (just because I was annoyed) - NOT FOR SALE

[PRIMAL SCREAM] Why do I waste my time and gas ???????

So, I then went to the local flea market (now in the other direction). I spent 1 1/2 hours wandering around and only came up with 1 clamp. I paid more than I would have liked for it because I was still frustrated from the estate sale, and I rarely see wide throated clamps in the wild. It's missing the screw pad, but I have a few extras from my last order that will fit. (pic 1)

On the way home I hit a TOO. Baby stuff ! but a neighbor had a table at the end of his drive with some misc tools on it. I found an unusual Vise Grip and 2 other pieces. (pics 2-4)

Pic 1 - $5
Hargrave (Cincinnati Tool Co) No. 44X 6x8 c-clamp (may get the Sage Green treatment like my others)

Pic 2-4 - $7
Peterson/DeWitt vise grips with unusual jaws. (no model number)
_______GIRARD
_______Steel Equipment Co.
_______St. Paul Minn.
Cman DOE wrench 1/4-5/16 (will become a new handle for my HF tool cabinet)
a cheap plastic (mostly) Tire Tread Depth Gauge

I don't have a clue what the vise grips were made for (so of course I had to have them), the PO was mystified as well. They seem to have the same/similar profile as rain gutters. I wonder if they were specially made for making/installing 3x4 gutters ?

Jake I'd guess those grips were made for forming a strip into that shape. Maybe for a backer for soldering two sections of gutter? :duuno:

Put in a narrow strip of sheet metal and see what it does.

A hit a few yard sales the last two weeks. One yielded me an Estwing hatchet, a long 1/4 Snap On extension and an old Craftsman round head ratchet with the V selector switch. $10 for those items, I missed most of the tools at that sale I was told.

A yard sale that only advertised tools (the man said he has other stuff that he couldn't put out yet). It was an older guy who looks like he had enough oil and gas stuff to be on American Pickers. He wasn't selling any of that.

At that sale I got a lot of Snap on to include 4 metric ratcheting T-handles, a set of SAE chrome combination wrenches (with a small 10mm Matco on the end), a line wrench, a distributor wrench, 2 screwdrivers, a socket driver, 6 metric semi deep 3/8 sockets, 1 universal joint a couple of other sockets and 5 torx bit sockets.

The rest of that sale was mostly quality USA stuff. I also got a 12" Proto adjustable, a 15" Blue Point adjustable, a large Mac 1 1/2" wrench, CMan peg board hooks (NOS), Cman 1/4 socket set with a SK ratchet, Cman and Mac brake bleeder wrenches, 2 Cman nut drivers, 2Mac shallow 3/8 metric sockets, 2 other universal joints and a few other Taiwan items. $150 at that sale. I thought I might have paid too much but think I did well after researching the Snap on stuff.

The last two sales I got a Cman 4" capacity chain wrench, A Cman 1/2" breaker bar, Williams 10" adjustable, 1 1/2" Billings wrench, Cman 1/2" speeder, Chinese Forstner bits, Cman torx drivers, jumper cables, misc air fittings, Alltrade (home Depot special) impact driver set, couple of taiwan impacts and a few other smaller items for $25.

Damn Tucko, looks like you bought the entire garage sale out :lol_hitti

If prices were right, I'd have bought it all as well, great finds

$75 total. I was the 3rd guy there, the other 2 got most of the good stuff. I left behind a set of tanks and a welding torch....No room for it...

Out of the pile, I'm most excited about the boxes and boxes of screws. It may mean that I wont have to drive to a box store on a Saturday morning and spend $3.00 on a bag of 4 poorly cast screws.

Bunch of woodworking junk you guys don't care about, SK 1/4" driver that looks brand new and a black hard handle Snap On screwdriver

What makes you think that we don't care about woodworking tools ? Tools be tools !!!

I was being a bit facetious - but I think in general woodworking tools, hand tools especially, get less attention here. But I'm ok with that! Ya'll just keep leaving them behind and I'll just keep scooping them up. :p

it actually came apart fairly easily. the guts are soaking now. they dont look too bad. worst case i need a rebuild kit.

EDIT: After soaking and removing the rust I think this ratchet is a goner. There is a lot of pitting on the internal parts and No matter what I do I cannot get it to work. The pitting wont allow the main gear or pawl to move freely inside the body of the ratchet.

Today was a quick in-and-out day at the outdoor flea.

Yesterday I was home fixing pvc p-traps and drain line plumbing so no sales. And no joy. Just stank. And not the good kind. LOLZ

Box o' goodies today was $15 for all, $5 of which was for the two locks, for...uhhh...well,we know who. :)

For the $10 mainly S-K combos with a S-K big socket, a Cornwell socket and a big Protos USA offset combo.

6-in-1 Lutz and a Husky USA small head 1/2" and Made in Japan 1/4" ratchets.

All in all not hateful.

Yea, like I need more tools. Hahahahaha.

What kind of wood vise did you get?

Its a Richard Wilcox 377 quick release. Actually have two of them right now, must have been available at a local hardware store. This one looks like it was installed new on the bench and went untouched till I took it off this afternoon. It is in really nice shape.

yup. I emailed MAC about rebuild kit availability. if one is available ill give it a try. just hope they dont want me to send in the whole thing. no way they will warranty that rusty ratchet and I wont even waste the postage to mail it.

Between work demands and not many sales that look that enticing not much to show for the last few weekends. A few items picked up along the way though.

Proto Puller and a Mac Screwdriver

Cool P&H cast iron sign. Perhaps it came off an old P&H crane, who knows :dunno:. Thought it would go good in the garage.

Got up early yesterday and hit just one sale, it was advertised as a tool sale fri-sat so showing up on Saturday morning I didnt think much would be left. I was suprised to see this us general box stuffed full of tools. I went through it quickly seeing 150 dollars worth of snap on in the socket drawer so I asked him if he would break it up, he said everyone kept asking him that but he wouldn't. His asking price was 300 wich was fair but I had to dicker.... offered 150 expecting him to come down to 250 and was hoping to settle at 200, he shook my hand at 150
I sold 5 snap on ratches yesterday and a few sockets for 200 , the box is still full and paid for

Jim,
For more info on that box and what should come in it I found this web site at the link below. Seems a real good resource for these old tools. Now I have to find the tray, socket sets and small box set that came with it.

y'all done well this weekend.
mav- all that stuff is good, but that wood working bench vise could be pretty usefull.

flyer- puller is handy as hell, but that P&H sign is way to cool.
if I were you i'd hang that in the garage and never think of selling it.
but....if it's steel(cast iron) i'd paint it and than paint the raised letters in some contrasting color. or if its alum i'd paint it and than sand gently w/ a DA the raised lettering.

jusridin- making yer $ back and still having a ton of stuff left over for yerself is all most of us can ask for:beer:

Wow you guys are kicking ****!

Do you guys realize we are well above a page a day on this thread? And that's after a slow start in Jan/Feb...

I did some adding on after a late stop at an estate sale from yesterday while I was out getting paint for the Starrett Vise from last week. He had a K 520 full of the usual suspects but "I haven't been thrugh tht one yet so not ofr sale jet"

Today it's marked "not for sale" so I asked and he's keeping "grandpa's machinist's tool"

:dunno:

So, I had to settle for this stuff:

Antique wood bar Clamps

Starrett DI

Yet another General Drill grinding Attachment, and 1/2 an old decorative hinge: I'm hoping this is a match for one I broke a while back...

Grinding compound

$15 all!

Divine, I used a similar flat file cabinet for the base of my lathe table, you could always incorporate it into a bench or table and gain storage instead of loosing work area. :)

Here's my take from a esate sale close to the house. I should of just went back home after, the rest were zeros.
A couple Cincinatti c clamps, a Snap On 250 ft.lb tourqe wrench, a dremel that I'll need when I fix one of the gears on my lathe, CM 8 point sockets, a full can of acetone, like new wood bore bit set, a number stamp set. All for $ 35.00
Spent$ 30.00 on a horse blanket for the wife. For the wife's horses that is. But hey, she does the mowing here, so I look out for her.

So, it can hold a lot of weight? What do you think per drawer? It's roller bearings.

Nice score on the flat file! Bench gap: 1/2" spacer? :dunno:

Thanks. I'm actually considering shaving a 1/2" from my bench 2x4's. I probably won't though.

They can load those drawers solid with paper, so quite a bit. We always had some for completed drawings and some for packages of velum and Blueprint paper back in the day, and you could but 500 sheets in a drawer without issues.

500 sheets of "D" would weigh ~ 50 lbs, the larger "E" size was around 100 lbs. the rollers are the same for all the drawer sizes, and I never saw one struggle with the load...

I've also seen a few guys load them pretty solid with tools, and again, no issues.

What about a spacer between the top and the legs? Some 1X and done?

All: Great hauls and i know my font is huge so i don't have to always use my readers on my laptop, but i was back 6 pages and still didn't get back to yesterday. keep up the good work

CB: nice to see you grabbed a few items and hoping the lathe project is working out ok. also in case you didn't know those Irwin (Chinese made) wood drill bits put on a Milwaukee hole hog will drill a hole so quick you might think your wood turned to butter. the big ones look new and i think i paid about what you paid for everything for just those at HD a few years ago when i needed a couple new ones.

Devine: gotta love those metal storage cabinets and they "will" hold a lot of weight. you'll find a good spot for them i'm certain and if not my zip is 98166 so figure out the costs to ship them to me.

I picked up some metal storage cabinets myself yesterday along with a ton of painting stuff from a retiring painter and i'll post pictures later because still working in the yard today with my bride. couldn't resist checking out a few posts on GJ for a quick break.

Thanks , Probably just lucky. It was buried under junk on the bench with two tool boxes boxes that were "off limits", but everything loose seemed to be fair game. :dunno:

Beatcad, Thanks for the info on painting it. This one is cast iron. I will have to get an idea of the paint scheme from fleabay or google it.

@nochina1966 & beatcad. Yup it is going in the garage and no plans to ever sell since it is somewhat unique. I have the occasion to work with ironworkers and operating engineers/crane operators so I picked up on the P&H thing when I spied it. I was happy that it wasn't painted (draws less attention) and plus most folks don't know what the hell P&H is/was.

Been slacking on posting in here, but not on the tool hunting. I took a nice ride to a garage sale about 40 mins. away that I spotted on Craigslist. Got there late after getting WAAAAY sidetracked by another sale on the way (more on that later). Surprised to see this setup when I got there. box and contents $40!

The guy selling was super nice and selling things cheap. You guys would have drooled over a work bench he had for sale. VERY heavy old wood with steel top for only $40 too, but I had no means to move it. Couldn't even raise one end of this bench myself it was so heavy.

Not pictured: Large pair jack stands for $5, free pile of beat up heavy extension cords for scrap!,box of painting and pin striping supplies $3!

This box was a mix of AUTO/body/plumbing tools.

A few goodies in there: Ridgid & Reed cutters, Snap On body hammer head. I mostly wanted the storage even thought the top box has no lid.
