My dad scored 4 free ones, a guy a few houses away was throwing them away. Edit actually his are file cabinets. You might be able to buy some at a government auction for cheap.

I've definitely checked auction sites, government and otherwise. I've seen a few wooden library card catalogs go by, but none of these metal card file cabinets. It's funny, some people seem to be waist deep in these. Around here, not so much.

Do remember to either secure it to the wall, or never ever open too many drawers full of heavy hardware at the same time. Cards were lighter.

Beg to differ, Alan. The reason those cabinets were built so stout is Hollerith/IBM file card decks stacked 2 rows X 2.5' deep were as heavy as hardware. The system was still in use at my first workplace in the mid-1970s.

On mine, with drawers full of hardware, pulling out the top two drawers full length does not cause the slightest instability.

Jess: thanks for the Amazon links. please post pictures of the cabinet after you fill it up showing how you organized your stuff for all of us to be jealous or maybe give a helpful tip.

as far as screwing it to a stud in your shop or garage there isn't always one handy so just remember if you fill it up you should be fine if only pulling out one drawer at a time. you'll get in trouble if you start pulling out more than one and it might not be as fun as 52 card pick up if it falls forward.:D

Packard: we posted at the same time so maybe 2 drawers ok, but 3 or more might not be a good thing?

Will do. I actually went over to my buddy's house yesterday for exactly that reason -- to see how he filled up his cabinets. He's a very accomplished machinist, and has his filled with a wide assortment of material he's collected over the years.

Full confession: This is not my only hardware store. I've previously built a rolling cabinet to hold a fairly extensive collection of Sortimo removable-cup sorting trays, along with a bunch of Akro-Mils hanging bins. I keep the vast majority of my smaller fasteners in Sortimo trays, which are really, really awesome. That said, they have their limit, and when heavily loaded with (say) 1/2" fasteners, the plastic flexes a bit more than I'm comfortable with. So I need something a bit heavier-duty for the larger hardware, as well as the longer bits of material.

Here's some shots of the Sortimo cabinet:

I've got it setting on a dolly right now, and it probably won't ever leave the dolly. So I'll have to just try to keep only one drawer open at a time so as not to invite disaster.

Jess,

That is really a nice setup, you said it isn't your only one, can you show us some pictures of the others?

I just started reading about your shop from your other thread.

First of all thanks for the organization ****. I'll be staring at those photos for weeks, my everything is in a mess as I'm packing up to move.

Go to the dollar store and get bread loaf pans. They're usually cheaper (unless you have a really good source for sheet goods) than making your own and hold a LOT of hardware before breaking. even if they flex a little they'll last forever.

I've just got the card file shown at the start of this thread and the Sortimo cabinet shown just above. The pictures of the big white cabinet with the blue cases did show up, yeah?

Happy to be of service. :)

I'll have to check those out. If they come in at about 5 inches, that could be useful.

I've got 3 card file cabinets. Two of them are in my garage and store all sorts of hardware and consumables. The third one is my shed and stores a lot of small metal stock for welding and fabrication projects.

They are all in excellent condition and I paid $80 for each of them. I bought the first 2 a few years ago from an office furniture liquidation centre. I had my choice from about 30 that he was selling and only a few matched each other.

My "shed" cabinet came with removable metal box/bins for each drawer. For my "garage" cabinets I use clear plastic juice bottles that cut down to size.

Your nice neat stack there in the corner is one of the images that seared itself into my brain, convincing me that I too must own one (or more) of these cabinets. So thanks for that!

I am closer, but it would still take me all day to go and get it. It may be worth it. Found one on ebay for $165 but I am sure the shipping would kill it.

Two more!

Where did you get those?

Just one more, shown here next to the original first. So a total of two.

I got the second one from the same guy as the first one. He's in the re-purposing business, and said he thought he knew where there was a second one. He called me yesterday and said he had it, so I drove up last night and picked it up.

And he has one more as well -- a 4x6 model -- though he didn't have it on hand. So if anyone in the Bay Area is looking for one, I know where to find it, though it'll cost a bit more than the two I got.

If I'm not mistaken, an ***-ton is SAE only. I believe that a bum-ton would be metric. Let's not go confusing our weight and measure standards.

My wife sourced a similar cabinet from the same manufacturer - for $100. at a local estate sale. very very heavy, now in my garage.

Speaking of file cabinets - If anyone need lateral or reg file cabinets in the DFW area - let me know otherwise I am donating a dozen or so this time next week.

I got one today for free on Craigslist. It needs a good cleaning, or rather a new paint job, and possibly a new lock, but other than that, it's in great shape. All the drawers are smooth as butter, and they slide back into place once it gets close enough to the cabinet. Also, I really like the Art-Deco styled handles. It's a Steelcase, and quite heavy.
