Jess: thanks for the Amazon links. please post pictures of the cabinet after you fill it up showing how you organized your stuff for all of us to be jealous or maybe give a helpful tip.
Will do. I actually went over to my buddy's house yesterday for exactly that reason -- to see how
he filled up his cabinets. He's a very accomplished machinist, and has his filled with a wide assortment of material he's collected over the years.
Full confession: This is not my only hardware store. I've previously built a rolling cabinet to hold a fairly extensive collection of Sortimo removable-cup sorting trays, along with a bunch of Akro-Mils hanging bins. I keep the vast majority of my smaller fasteners in Sortimo trays, which are
really, really awesome. That said, they have their limit, and when heavily loaded with (say) 1/2" fasteners, the plastic flexes a bit more than I'm comfortable with. So I need something a bit heavier-duty for the larger hardware, as well as the longer bits of material.
Here's some shots of the Sortimo cabinet:
as far as screwing it to a stud in your shop or garage there isn't always one handy so just remember if you fill it up you should be fine if only pulling out one drawer at a time. you'll get in trouble if you start pulling out more than one and it might not be as fun as 52 card pick up if it falls forward.
I've got it setting on a dolly right now, and it probably won't ever leave the dolly. So I'll have to just try to keep only one drawer open at a time so as not to invite disaster.
