Speaking of Wilton's, that reminds me. My new grease cap came in the other day. With very minor alterations I think it looks great. Sure beats having a gaping hole back there.

Andrew: sorry i didn't notice the .125 gap on the bottom of the one jaw. yes i was talking from top to bottom, but now see that won't fix your issue. since you are trying to mill them flat as one option are you able to clamp the static or the dynamic in your mill's vise to maybe do that with the jaws still attached? KMScott or others might have a better answer, but they are probably down for the night. the only reason i'm still online tonight is it was 95 here in Seattle today which is like 120 in Arizona and my house doesn't have air so i'm too hot to sleep. good luck and i hope you get it figured out.

Rusty: i can't remember seeing an older Wilton bullet with 6 inch jaws. it looks like it's been to war and maybe was. Is the plan for Electrolysis or sandblasting? the prior owner looks like he might have made a nice attempt to save the vise with the modified horseshoe part to hold the screw in. after you got the vise un stuck did it screw in and out ok without any slop?

,---Don't sell the kids just yet. If you are referring to $3000.00 for the 978, that was just a fluke. I mean how many times are you going to find a mint 978. But to be honest, at $2100.00 I was hoping someone would come in and outbid me. My knees were shaking like a rubber goose. I'll never do it again. Good deals do come along on 8 inchers if you are patient and a little lucky. Albeit not as often as they used to it seems. If memory serves, the 978 that Rusty Musket has , he paid $250.00 for. Now that was a deal. And that is a really clean 978.
If you are really the patient kind, here's a plan for you. Start now putting back some cash every month until the next recession hits. When the recession is in it's third trimester and you have spendable cash, people will treat you like a God. You'll have to decide which 8 inchers you want and which ones you don't. And shipping is down to bare bone. Recessions come around about every 10 years, and we're almost 7 years out of the last one, (so they say.) Won't be long now. But how can you be sure that we will have another recession you ask? Because we have a Washington DC.

How about that Baby Wilton on E-bay going for $322.33 plus shipping. Sounds like they were bidding on the Harley. I've never sold any vises, but if this keeps up, I'm going to have drag some out and sell them and then buy them back during the recession. I love it when a plan comes together.

OMG! Alright, I have my 2" Willie 920 swivel vice now for sale ... first $300 gets it! Bill

Rusty Musket - I'm pretty positive that's a custom job, and it looks like you're stuck with it as it was quite thorough. I believe that is a very early model, wish I could give you a better time frame. I'm sure autopts will be a long sooner or later.

She appears to be in pretty rough shape, looks like a good challenge! Looking forward to seeing more as you progress.

Thanks Andrew. I am guessing that the original collar was the horseshoe type with screws at 9, 12, & 3 o'clock. Maybe I can find a blank/un-drilled version from one of the Wilton parts vendors and drill 4 holes to match my layout.

I'm selling my Wilton Tradesman 1760 and someone offered to barter this plus cash. It is a Parker 974 and it looks in great condition. Anyone have any suggestions about potential problems with these? Can I easily remove and replace the jaws?

Thanks

Joe,
I can't answer your question directly. I have been told the jaws on Parker Vises are quite hard to remove.I just parted out a Parker 974 and have a classified ad on GJ with the remaining parts. Maybe an experiment/test/practice run? I am sure others will chime in here and give some expert advice.

I just want to know if they are fiddly to remove and then return to the vise.

Regarding your Parker jaws: If the pins are stuck, then yes. If not, then no. They are fitted jaws, so keep track of which jaw goes on which side - static/dynamic. I also picked up some #4 drill rod (.207") from Graingers and made new pins. It was much easier than dealing with old rusty ones. This also lets you grind the pins down flush to the jaws for a nice finished look.

Andrew: I really like that cap you put on your Wilton Bullet better than the flat freeze plugs. is that the ETrailer.com one and do you have the part # handy to share? also what modifications did you have to do to make it fit or did you just have to make it a bit shorter on the edge that slides in? i need one for a Wilton tradesman which i'm pretty sure is the same size.

hope you had better luck with your Morgan after i shut down last night or that you put it on hold and will have it figured out when you get at it again.

VA: so i'll collect the tiny ones like you and Get do to sell and pay for the big ones. i like that idea. sort of like fishing. i wonder if not only the gun guys like those baby bullets, but maybe also the techies for their small stuff they work on?:dunno:

That's the one. I had to crimp the sides a bit to get it to stay put, otherwise it just fell out. No cutting or grinding. I did it with a pair of vise grips.

It's true Nick. I do hoard a little. But these values are approaching the Godfather level. Offers one can't refuse. I guess I'll be one of the last holdouts, but if it gets much crazier, they are going to force my hand.

VA: do pigs fly in Virginia because if they do then i might find that hoard of baby bullets in a basket, but i'm thinking the savings plan might work better with a little patience.

speaking of security like AutoPts mentioned here's a full size picture of the Blacksmithing table that was under a vise a few days ago. these are getting harder to find than huge vises so maybe you need to find a few reasonable ones, get them on your piece of Vise heaven and chain a ton or two of BIGUNS to the table and off the ground. helping you save the crew from getting dirty or escaping.

Mtesh and Andrew: thank you for the Etrailer order # and tip on keeping the new dust cover in place.

Dean, these tables are called Acorn Welding Tables. The square holes are for jigs to aid welders in welding assembly's.

KM: i agree, but I've yet to see one in a shop that there wasn't a blacksmith working there. thanks for putting the appropriate name to them.

don't you think VA's chain gang would do better on the top of a couple of these? :bounce:

by the way I think i saw one of your awesome pictures having a dynamic or static jaw sitting in your mill vise to fix some jaws. do you have one to post or was that somebody else because Andrew is having a little problem getting the jaws off his Morgan he's working on???

Drivesit,---That is one awesome sight. 4 of those slabs in one pile. Are they still making those things. I couldn't in any way afford one, but out of curiosity what do those tables cost approximately. I'm assuming their cast.

VA: those tables are just like your 8 inch vises. some are a great deal if your timing and patience is good. if you just want to gaze at a few available today those came off your favorite auction site you might be amazed at the specs and prices on these little guys. you need a couple and make sure the holes are big enough for the chains.

by the way you probably need a tow truck or a flat bed semi truck to bring them home and yes i'm pretty sure all are cast.

I picked up a vise on CL. It's an Erie Tool Works 4 3 1/2. I cleaned it with a wire wheel, primed and painted it in about an hour.

Acorn Welding Tables run from $3500 to $10,000 depending on size!

Saw that a few days ago, it appears to be a knockoff. I personally wouldn't buy it, but if it's indeed Made in England then it might be worth picking up. I doubt it though.

Happy 4th everyone.

I'm looking for a dynamic jaw for a 1983 Wilton 1740. I bought a decent conditoned Wilton 1740 for $25.00 but the previous owner really trashed the screws in the dynamic jaw and I don't think it is recoverable. I have two choices as I see it, replace the jaw or buy undrilled blank jaws and drill and tap new ones. If I had a machine shop I'd just drill the whole mess out, fill and retap using factory inserts, but as I don't...I thought I'd check on here.

PM me if you can help. Thanks.

Whoa, you're giving up too easy, send me pictures. I may be able to fix it for you if you'd be willing to mail it to me. A couple trashed screws is hardly a reason to scrap the entire dynamic jaw.

Nines: those are called Acorn tables and used for welding. i really have only seen them where there is a blacksmith on site, but i'm sure the welders would like to own one. i would bet your new Mag drill would even have a tough go punching a hole in one of them.

I've seen them for as little as $1000 for a 4 x 4 or 5 x 5 and if you read back a few posts you'll see they can go a bit higher especially if bigger. the 4 x 4's might weight close to 1500 pounds if they have a decent pair of legs or a stand under it. i grabbed the pics off one of our favorite auction sites so take a gander and put one on you list to be chained to the framing of your new garage if you want to use it outside.

Alinc: with all the deals you are finding i'm just waiting for you to start up your own version of Home Depot. good for you. unfortunately that isn't one of them. if it is English it should say on the vise and it might be, but even if it is how did the huge worm hole get in the dynamic jaw. don't just walk, you need to run from that unless it is next to nothing and you need a parts vise.

All: I picked up a pretty decent vise that says Wilton 606 SJ, but it looks and i hear it's a Columbian made for Wilton vise. is it???? it has 6 inch wide jaws and at least 150 pounds and probably closer to 180 because i think it is the heaviest vise i own now. i'd appreciate any information anybody has while i'm sorting it out and getting ready to restore it and if you want to give some good information about it you can do so here or on a thread i'm going to start on it since i only found one other one on the internet and very little information. guess where i found the information? GJ in 2012 some member had one and who knows maybe this was it.

I hear they're decent vises, obviously not meant for heavy duty work or pounding on objects that are clamped in it. If you need a decent Made in USA light-medium duty vise I think it would serve you well as long as it's not abused.

Thank you, that's really all I'm looking for, just something a little better than import junk. I don't need an industrial grade one for my light/medium duty mechanic work that I normally partake in.

Thank you for the response.

Is this a good deal? I see that its USA made so I figure it's pretty decent, was going to offer $40.

http://jacksonville.craigslist.org/tls/4546949802.html

I'm not familiar with that model number, or when the 51xxx series stopped putting the jaw size on the the side of the dynamic jaw. But yea, I have an earlier (I think) 5 1/2" model and it's been a great vice for medium (and occasional med-heavy) work since I bought it 25yrs ago. It was made by Columbian and is cast, not forged. That means that it has voids inside to keep the weight down and save on material.

$50 would be the absolute tops I'd pay for it, but only if I needed a large vise RIGHT NOW. Otherwise I'd go no more than $40, only because it's USA made and not the later import, and would be more comfortable at $35. With patience, you might be able to find an old forged vise in the 4" range for similar money.

If that's the style of vise you want, then you would be getting a decent worker for your bench.

Drive,
My wife says if I don't quit finding good deals I'm gonna be able to open HomeLESS Depot !!
Just today thanks to GJ and Sears I bought 6 or 7 of the "vintage" looking T-shirts a few days ago, they are/were $8.00 to $8.50 I bought enough that shipping was free and bought in both XL and 2xl because I wasn't sure which would fit better. Sears decided the most economical way to ship was via 6 packages delivered by UPS. Took me a awhile to prove to SWMBO it wasn't tools!! Ended up with the 2xl shirts and sent her best friend home with the XL's for her hubby, anything they don't want will get returned.

American Scale No 79 is identical to your Wilton.

Here's a pic I saved of someone's No. 79 for reference. Pretty similar! :headscrat
