Anyone else run into issue with there dual 80 ratchets. I use mine daily as a pro tech, I've had them about 4 years they've all been rebuilt a few times. And skip teeth and such. There's no heavy grease in them. I find myself using my course tooth snappys more

While the short swing is great it comes with a price. Those little teeth are not as strong. I have been going to something beefier if I know I will be pulling hard. I was going to ask this same thing eventually.

When i am really leaning into getting something loose. I use my 30t Cornwells or my snap on dual 80s. Mine have never skipped. Should be said that I don't use them daily either.

Mine are only a couple of months old, and the other day it skipped a tooth while I was reefing on it.(350-f400ft/lbs). I thought I had dislocated my elbow, it hurt for an hour. Now I am afraid to use it for serious work

Everything wears out or breaks. Especially if you use it everyday. I have a friend that broke his 3ft snappy breaker bar, doing an alignment. It was 1-2 months old. He weighs about 155lbs. He is strong, but anything can break. He does not use the bar often.

Probably just needs a rebuild. I suggest lubing it when you first get it. It makes it even smoother.

I am not sure what else you can do. I use Lucas engine oil additive for lube. Non-synthetic, because it is thicker. I find it makes a difference, in the way the ratchet feels.

You must be very productive!!!

No issues here.. As far as that goes mine are all on the original guts/lube, I never disassemble to clean or lube as they seal pretty good. With all that said, I wrench on weekends and evenings, so my stuff doesn't see 40+ hour weekly workouts. I won't own a ratchet I can't trust, which is why I parted ways with older craftsman and the Newer GW/Matco 80+ tooth ratchets as I had nothing but binding/reversing issues.

Can you request it be swapped for another one since it has been rebuilt so many times? The ratchet body may be slightly off causing them to get prematurely worn out.

I thought i saw a pic on here one time of like a Matco 88 and a Dual 80 Snap-on with the drive ends snapped off because there was a bolt in a hard to reach spot and over torqued. I think they broke like three of em but the guts never busted or skipped. Anybody else remember this?

Yes they were all 1\4 drive on an engine mount bolt.

Ive never had that problem. I use traxxis pure silicone gear oil for lube and its awesome

I over greased my matco 3/8 ratchet once and noticed it skipped, cleaned it up and put less grease in and so far its been good to me. My SO 3/8 dual 80 never had a problem but I use it less than the Matco.

Was it a 3/8 ratchet or 1/2 that you were having problems with?

The dude was using a 1/4 rat(well 3 of them), to reach in and do a motor mount. Supposedly to beat the clock.
But yeah.... we remember.

But to op. Nope, mine are kicking 3yrs later, in daily shop use.

Quality cheap rats are the way to go if you need to lean on em. This 36 tooth snap on/williams at under 40 bucks is just so undervalued it's ridiculous.

I have been partial to the 40, 45 tooth range myself. You have plenty of teeth for when I really have to get on something and yet get ( at least to me anyway) much smoother action then the 36's. My go to is a wright 3490 and its great. little short but as far as action goes its the best of both worlds.

Most of my dual 80s will occasionally skip as if the pawl jumps. Nothings broken yet though.

I have to have all my 3/8 and 1/2 dual 80s repaired. I think the gears are weaker than the older 36 thooth ratchets. I love them, and I also have some gw 120s, but the snap ons are better. The gw 120 has been more problematic for me. I love them both......but if I need to use a cheater on a ratchet.......it will be a snap on 936

I've still had zero issues with my Dual 80s and my GW ratchets. Well used, not abused (well, in comparison to some of the dumb **** I've seen folks do.:D)

Amen, that's still my favorite ratchet, and the smoothest 36t I've ever used. The old RP Craftsman ratchets feel like they only have 10 teeth in comparison.

Seems like the consensus is that the 36 tooth (30 tooth in Cornwell's case) are the brute force ones.

I may put a cheater on my beater 3/8 Duralast and see how it does on lug nuts next brake job.

I break everything loose with my FLL80, FHLF80 and FHL80 where my 2135TiMAX and M18 Fuel won't fit. Had them all warrantied in less than a year. My dealer hands me a new one every time.

Surprisingly my T72 and TLL72 has held up so far. Broke loose countless starters and engine mounts without a sweat.

The biggest thing with a SO dual 80 is, the cover plate bolts HAVE to stay properly torqued. I can't tell you how many guys ive worked with that complained about the ratchet "acting up"... Nope, tightened the cover bolts= zero issues!!!
