Long time lurker/dreamer but I finally have a build to contribute!

A little about us first, we have 4 wonderful children (ages 18, 16, 8 and 4). Older three are boys and finally a little girl (who is spoiled by her brothers). My wife is an artist and loves creating large pieces (canvas, sculptures, etc). I am a auto-aholic. I love cars! All kinds of cars! And I am finally at the point in my life where I can start acquiring the ones I like (start my collection). So knowing that, we are a very noisy, fun, strange and not the "normal" family. Not that there's anything wrong with soccer, minivans, malls, gyms, etc. We just don't fit in with that group.

We are fortunate to currently have a big beautiful home near Austin TX. When we bought our home, we chose a neighborhood that we thought was going to meet our needs. Large 1-3 acre lots, zeroscaping yards, etc.. As the neighborhood grew, we started to feel more and more out of our comfort zone. HOA, complaining neighbors, neighborhood forum drama, etc.. Finally we hit our limit and had to make a change.

So wife was on the hunt for some acreage with or without a home. After 9-11 months of searching she found the perfect 11 acre lot that met both of our needs. I wasn't going to live on a dirt road and she wanted trees and some sort of water (creek, etc). We all fell in love with this place:

So we found the land! Next up was figuring out what we were going to do about a house. My wife has wanted to build her house since both homes she grew up in her father built. I have always wanted to have a shop, a metal shop to be exact. So a 50'x100'x20' metal building was calling our name! Half will be a 2 story house and the other half will be my shop. We found a GC that would let my wife do as much or little as she wanted. She picked out the building, designed the floor plan, work with a sub contractor to figure out the rainwater collection system, etc.

Things took way longer than anticipated but we finally have progress:

You're off to a good start there Morio, that's quite an attractive location (if I sound surprised, it's because Texas doesn't look anything like that in John Wayne movies ).

I'm keen to see more - I'll be watching this one with interest.

We currently live in Driftwood (by the salt lick) but our new place is in Dripping Springs. Thanks for the luck! We will need all we can get! And Mitch is a great guy! We spent a good portion of a Sunday at his place.

Beautiful area. I have always wondered what it would be like to live on land with actual dirt. :) [I live in the desert]

The worst part about these threads is I see the start, and I immediately want to see the end!

Great looking piece of land, and looking forward to the build!

So I mentioned some of the pros of doing this, but I also wanted to show some cons of moving out in the middle of no where. We had to pay the electric COOP to put in electricity. $2k per pole (included labor) and we had to put in 13 poles!!! YUCK! That sucked away a lot of my "new" toys for the shop money :( Oh well though, it's only money. I will save up some more.

and finally we are ready to pour on Monday morning:

In some ways i would call that Wild Lonesome, now for the coyotes and the occasional bob cat, racoons and all that wild life, ho the deer !! rocks and snake go together, it sounds dangerous,

better move in my house and i will move to urs with my country dogs that are stuck in the city, they would love that place. enjoy.

105 heat index dfw, Mexicans didn't live here, Comanches didn't live here, no one lived here and when a survey crew surveyed Wichita falls area, in the 1800s for an Indian rez, they ate the horses and the dogs before they got out, and good water was scarce.

Austin was as far north as any went, and the Comanches raided Austin twice i think maybe more ? where you at tejas ? chime in on that.

Texas, hell on women and horses, and most anythang else that lives and breathes.

Looks like y'all picked a good spot in the Texas hill country area with acreage and yes most definitely a place to get away from it all. No HOA to deal with, no city taxes?, no complaining neigbhors, etc. your sure going to enjoy it!

Thanks for posting and sharing.

Agreed, I looked at the date of the original post and was disappointed that it was so recent, I'm sure this one will be good.

I assume the coop would not bury the electrical or if they did it would be very expensive?

It's coming along nicely.

Yes we are definitely living our dream. We have a nice deer population where we are now and so can't wait to see all the wildlife out there on a daily basis!

My wife and I are wanting to do the same. We’ve started looking for property and hopefully when my son finally graduates college we’ll be able to start on ours. There are several here in the area, but we’re wanting to move away, far away from the Houston area.
Good Luck with the build.
