Long time lurker/dreamer but I finally have a build to contribute!
A little about us first, we have 4 wonderful children (ages 18, 16, 8 and 4). Older three are boys and finally a little girl (who is spoiled by her brothers). My wife is an artist and loves creating large pieces (canvas, sculptures, etc). I am a auto-aholic. I love cars! All kinds of cars! And I am finally at the point in my life where I can start acquiring the ones I like (start my collection). So knowing that, we are a very noisy, fun, strange and not the "normal" family. Not that there's anything wrong with soccer, minivans, malls, gyms, etc. We just don't fit in with that group.
We are fortunate to currently have a big beautiful home near Austin TX. When we bought our home, we chose a neighborhood that we thought was going to meet our needs. Large 1-3 acre lots, zeroscaping yards, etc.. As the neighborhood grew, we started to feel more and more out of our comfort zone. HOA, complaining neighbors, neighborhood forum drama, etc.. Finally we hit our limit and had to make a change.
So wife was on the hunt for some acreage with or without a home. After 9-11 months of searching she found the perfect 11 acre lot that met both of our needs. I wasn't going to live on a dirt road and she wanted trees and some sort of water (creek, etc). We all fell in love with this place:
So we found the land! Next up was figuring out what we were going to do about a house. My wife has wanted to build her house since both homes she grew up in her father built. I have always wanted to have a shop, a metal shop to be exact. So a 50'x100'x20' metal building was calling our name! Half will be a 2 story house and the other half will be my shop. We found a GC that would let my wife do as much or little as she wanted. She picked out the building, designed the floor plan, work with a sub contractor to figure out the rainwater collection system, etc.
Things took way longer than anticipated but we finally have progress:
Slab gets poured this week! Our Building arrives on the 18th! We are so excited!
I wanted to thank you all for your amazing builds that I have followed so closely and a huge thank you to Mitch (motormitch) for opening up the doors of your shop and letting us pick your brain!! Thanks so much!
