Excellent advice

By far and away, I've obtained my best tools and deals this way. I would go to buy a $10 part or tool I needed and end up driving away with my car fully loaded busting at the seams. Did this quite a few times.

Other tip: Put all things you may want buy in a pile and at the end of hunting ask him how much for everything.

Yep, I've done this. But be careful too, if your at a sale with other customers around. I was at sale one time, and they had a few boxes of books, and so I went and started looking through them (I'm a very avid reader) and I came across an old box-set of Lord of the Rings that I knew was worth $200-250 in the condition they were in.

I asked what they wanted for it, and she said "Oh five dollars" and someone else spoke up before I could say okay, and they said "I'll give you ten." Than I kind of mock-hesitated about it and said "well, my brother is a big Tolkien fan, so $20". The guy that was trying to buy it out of my hands said "Well, I don't have that much cash on me, so **** it. Just so you know, that thing is worth a few hundred bucks." Suddenly the item was no longer for sale.

So, word of caution about letting your potential goodies score sit around too much. If you find something truly great at a "you ****" price. Just quietly buy it, take it to your truck, than return to the sale to shop more. lol

Thanks Filson,

Yeah I was thinking the same but the 70lb vise fell three feet onto a concrete floor. I was three rooms away (40') and could still feel the thump on the cement slab. Either it was already cracked or it fell directly on the handle. I'm actually glad it was just the vise, by the sound of it I was really worried it was something much bigger and pricier.

I'll go to the Vise part trading thread and see if anything comes up. This is my third Athol 614 in my life so it's not a huge deal to me but still *****.

Macgee, I looked at my vise list from the Golden pile and seen that my 614-1/2 was trashed and thought that I had a spindle for you. But after looking it over it is in better shape then my notes mentioned. The threads are Buttress a typical thread type for the Athols and Starretts. But I do have a spindle out of a Athol 624 that is a 7/8:6 Buttress Thread that might work for you. PM me if you are interested.

You are absolutely correct!

I'm not feeling so bad since I also scored two Wilton Bullets (350s) for $20 each this week, so that takes the sting out of my stupid blunder but since I already have them in my possession I better look for another vise to replace the Athol.

Plus, if I can't find a replacement spindle I'm happy to part out the vise to whoever needs parts, I've been on the receiving end so I'm happy to help out.

***** about the Athol, but the Wilton's look nice, I hope to find one someday. best of luck finding parts/replacement.

Macgee,

Man that *****. =/ Not sure if it should of broken from just a fall though, maybe it had an issue already? Might be a blessing in disguise, that it didn't happen while you were cranking down something.

Macgee.. Sorry to hear your misfortune. I'm not sure if there is a forum for spare parts or not on here (I've only personally plowed back through ~ 10% of this thread). Depending on how much you're willing to spend on it, someone with a large lathe and the requsite skills might be able to reproduce it for you out of the steel / iron of your choice.. probably $$ but who knows..

These are my South Bend Lathe (SBL) vises.. One is a shaper vise 4", the picture with the 'base' on it can be used with the shaper vise, but has SBL X/Y tables on it currently. The one on the peg board next to the socket extensions is commonly called a SBL milling attachment, but it would otherwise be called a milling machine vise (with the milling machine being a 10k SBL).

KMScott, who already responded makes all kinds of vise goodies, then there is Ritzblitz also. Not sure what else he makes, but when it comes to spindles, his name often comes up, like it is his specialty.

Yeah I saw that note after I posted to the broke screw comment. That's what I love about this forum (and Practical Machinist & Studebaker Drivers Club that I also belong to)..so many rich resources and thoughtful people who are genuinely interested in each other and the expansion and enjoyment of our vises.... :rocker:

Dennis: happy to see that you asked permission (you didn't need to, but thanks for asking) and then posted up a bunch of great looking vises. not that you need to know because you already own some nice vises, but if you hang around this thread you end up for a need or a want for a 100 or 200 pound plus vise. Just because is the best explanation i can tell you. welcome.

Jason: thanks for worrying and i'll let you know, but the darn vises are too big to create any issues for my "little" cabinet. you might have been gone when i mentioned that my "little" cabinet weighs 500 pounds without anything in it and each of the 5 shelves are rated for a ton. Here is another shelving unit i have that is going to hold the tall 6 inch vises i can't fit in the "little" cabinet and all the weight on the shelves in the picture was inside my cabinet plus 2000 more pounds that i sold off a couple shelves before moving them. :bounce:

this one didn't make it in the cabinet, but i don't see these often so posted up a picture as i found it in the back of a huge barn. Hardy is the name on it and don't know much more about it. it looks like a Stanley so did Hardy make vises for them or vise versa??

Drivesitfar: Does the one posted by oldldh put me in the 100-200# club? The price seems high, but this guy is in Franklin Indiana, which is a short stop on my drive from work in Columbus to home in Greenwood IN..

Thanks Dennis,

You are correct. The community in GJ has been excellent throughout all the different threads not just vises. The lack of vitriol of Gj has been very refreshing.

Thank You everyone for your kind help and suggestions.

Dennis: my 577's weigh in the 150-160 range so yes it does. I love mine so if it checks out its a nice addition to all your vises. By the way you have a nice family of them so far. Good luck

You people... finding all these awesome vise deals cheap... *sigh* I don't know what the deal is with Houston but I haven't found diddly squat in a long time here. Maybe it's just the heat people aren't bothering to clean out their garages right now.

Listed as "Large Vise" on Dayton C/L for $50.00. I just got an e-mail from the C/L seller that it was sold.

4 1/2" Rock Island per e-mail response from the seller.

Listed as "Large Vise" on Dayton C/L for $50.00. Is it worth driving 180 miles round-trip?

Well, You **** and that's because I just looked at the Dayton C/L and there's a ton of vises going for $50. You could do the rounds and get yourself three or five good ones. Then totally yes, it's worth the drive. Is $40 in gas worth it?

Here's a Chas Parker with 7" jaws (prob. opening) for $50:

If you have a mill, this 6" vise would be good. Offer him $75, they sell new for around $400+. There also known as Teco vises, there's three to choose from.

Hello,

I have been enjoying the vise related threads here on Garage Journal for quite some time. Thought it was time to a share some photos of some of may favorite and more unusual vises. Some of these may have been posted before on Practical Machinist.

I am quite impressed with the collections some of you guys have!

The first vise is one I use almost daily. Its a Monarch vise built by Prentiss (it's marked PV Co.) It has 6.5" wide jaws. I believe this was the largest size Monarch vise made. I once saw an ad for these and 6.5" was the largest listed.

Does anyone have an ad for the Monarch vises?

I repaired this vise by braze welding in a new steel piece.

The other vise is an neat Athol coachmaker's/sheet metal vise. Again, used almost daily. Its unusual as it has a quick release nut. A handy feature.

The last vise is my newest addition and my first Chas. Parker. This one is in almost pristine shape. It still has the ID tag from the Bulova Watch Co. on it.

Thanks!

Dan

There's something wrong with the rock island in Paramus Craigslist. I forget what it is, broken foot or a weld repair on the slide.

He's had it listed for a long time. I'm not all that far. Maybe 2hrs. I really really don't need anymore vises though. Running out of room. If I make the journey, I'll grab the Hollands 26H too.

Ritz: you are probably right on about the broken foot because the guy in New Jersey posted 8 pictures and not one from the other side. one jaw missing too and hard to tell if the holes need to be re drilled and tapped again. it is a big one and Oldie posted an Ebay listing for one. they are a nice 150-160 pound vise.

Mac: i'd have that 7 inch Parker shipped for that price. what's up with that? maybe a crack or broken part on the slide or other side? swivel jaw too.

Pepper: nice $50 Rock Island and fill us in on the specs when you post pictures of it all spiffed up. please?? also did you get the stand too? and the tire?? and his wife?? i hate to say it without hearing if any flaws so i'll hold my YS and just say i think you stole that one.

IMO: That's a reasonable retail price but I would wait and dig deeper for a bargain. For me personally, the lack of a swivel base is a big draw back. But the size makes it desirable if you need one that big.

That is what I felt. I told the seller I couldn't do that price but she feels she will get close to asking. I told her hope she does. Thanks!

There are some excellent vises showing up these last couple of days.

Mtnwalker,

I said it before and I'll say it again: You **** and you restored that vise perfectly, I would love to have that vise; it's beautifully finished. Well done!

I always like having the side walls of the jaws unpainted just the way you did it.

Dan,

Welcome and those are some very respectable vises, all three of those are some of my favorites. I have a clean smaller Monarch (3.5") and love it but your Athol is super cool and since I am watch collector/trader I would dig having that Parker, actually I would be quite happy using that parker daily so it you want to get rid of it, I'll gladly take it off your hands (Joking, but no really) ;)

I have no idea but one thing I have learned the hard way is to try not to buy a vise without testing it. It's so hard finding problems with a vise online, while a picture can tell a thousand words they are still spots and problems that can not be seen/told by a pic.

If you see a big Chas Parker vise for sale for $50 it's either because the seller has no idea which means they won't be able to tell you if it has bad backlash or that the jaws don't line up evenly or close perfectly flush against each other or that the jaws are cracked and the jaw bolts are stripped or worse tig welded in place or if there's a crack on the backside on the slider or if the fixed nut for the spindle is cracked or worn out.............etc.

If the seller is knowledgeable then I doubt he would sell a flawless 100 lb Chas Parker with a rotating static jaw for $50 without it having problems unless he's GJ member.

All these possibilities above make the vise far from desirable and difficult to know while buying online unless he's GJ member.

Having said that the vise looks good, from the only pic (one side shot) I don't see any cracks or flaws, if the rotating jaw is in good shape and has the locking pin that's a plus and the jaws seem to line up and closed flush, that's always good. If there's nothing wrong with it, then yes after shipping it still probably a good buy (albeit: if there's nothing wrong with it).

I would rather buy online from a GJ member, D Ravizza are you reading this? I want your Chas Parker, take pity on me I just broke my vise :)

Cheers
