I've been lurking here as a registered user for a month or so, but have been a guest for a long time. I felt since I am in the midst of cleaning and organizing the garage at my new house, that I should post here what I've already done and get some input on what I should do going forward.

I'll spare the details of the actual house build, mostly because the image hosting site I had everything on went down and I lost a lot of my pictures. This is the lower level floor plan, specifically the garage:

Sonoma1_zpsd95a1797.png

I’ve got a lot of room I can work with, but I also have 4 cars that my wife demands be parked in the garage. Currently, however, both Mustangs (hence the title of this thread) are in the garage (one as a shell on jack stands and the other with other gremlins keeping it from moving under its own power) and another spot occupied by a miter saw and table saw as I just got done flooring the downstairs. Ultimately, I would like to have both Mustangs stacked on top of each other in the deep part of the tandem bay, leaving the “add-on” garage as a work area. I don’t intend for this to be a clean room, but I also want it to be a place that we can hang out.

This is what I started with:

2013-08-27180843_zpsb4a225a7.jpg

And this is what it looked like shortly after we moved in and I got the garage door installed, took the majority of **** inside, and most importantly, got my wife’s car in:

null_zpsd91efc61.jpg

My work bench resides at the back of the “add-on” third bay (I’ve since moved the hurricane shutters to a much better home):

null_zpsb3bc7e0e.jpg

Another shot of the third bay with the 66 Mustang in place:

null_zps02bdbfb1.jpg

null_zps232883bf.jpg

Now that I got some inside projects knocked out, I've turned my attention back to the garage. It was getting to the point of being dangerous there was such much stuff laying around covered in sawdust. Back in December I built a wall-to-wall 24” deep shelving unit at the back of the deep part of the tandem garage to house all of the parts I took off the cars:

Some aftermath of pulling the motor and every other part out of the 95 Mustang, and the cleanup:

CFA6DE19-EE40-4313-A91A-1C96DAABE74E_zpsodhnjclw.jpg

This past weekend I built 24” L shaped shelf over my work bench; I need to add the vertical supports tonight:

IMG_27081_zpsca45f40e.jpg

Here are pictures of what it looked like Sunday after a slight cleaning

IMG_27101_zps99b88f91.jpg

and the current state of the garage as of last night after a more thorough cleaning… it’s still a disaster area:

IMG_27141_zps95959407.jpg

I also picked this up as an early birthday present to myself… for $125!

IMG_27121_zpsc147d90b.jpg

Ideas I am kicking around, or things I need to think about (or your suggestions):
• Peg board or slat wall between workbench and shelf in L shape to electric panel; I can’t decide which way to go.
• Extending the top shelf (8’ tall) in the deep tandem garage down the length of the tandem garage at least on one side, probably both.
• A second 6’ workbench to form an L with the current workbench. This leaves me with a 16” gap on the left side of the work bench that I can:
• Find a vintage metal drawer stack/file cabinet.
• Build more shelves to hold books and power tools.
• Paint the walls. For some reason, I am fixated on Gulf Racing livery for the walls.
• Find the “new” drill press a permanent home.
• Lights!!! Not sure what to do in this department. I would love LED fixtures, but they are pretty pricey – even through my friend that is in lighting sales.
• Install a sink at the back of tandem garage next to water heater (there’s already a loop there).
• Hang dart board on wall in front of my wife’s car.
• Find a better place for the chest freezer?
• Run 110V to right side of tandem garage and right side of third bay.
• Run 220V to right side of tandem garage (welder and/or oven for powder coat)
• 4 post lift in deep bay. Ceilings are 9’8”, so with both Mustangs being lowered, they should fit fine.

Sorry for the lengthy first post, but the network is down at work today and all I could do is think about working in the garage even though it’s 92° outside today. I welcome any and all suggestions and recommendations!

Thanks!

Chris

Nice working garage ...oh and nice birthday present for yourself :)

Thanks! The drill press only needs a new arm and a fresh coat of paint.

I'm still trying to think of more ideas to make it a better space than it already is... including the other 4-5 pirate flags I have laying around.

Nice!! What are the plans for the pony cars?

Also with ceilings at 9'8 are you trying to stack on a 4 post or just work on...kudos if you are stacking - I am at 9'7 and trying to stack some cars on a 4 post (in the future) - my measurements keep me up at night on whether it will work on not. :wtf:

The measurements keep me up at night too. Based on Wikipedia heights of my cars, the ceiling height calculator one of the lift companies provided, and the fact that both of my cars are lowered gives me a little more confidence. I think I needed 9'6" and I have 9'8" plus whatever room lowering the cars gives me. I'm going to hate myself if I buy that lift and I can't get them stacked. The lift will be the last thing I do most likely. That's why I'm here asking for ideas on what to do with the rest of the space!

As for plans on the cars... I just want the 66 running again and then I can work on the mistakes of my youth. I built the car when I was 15-18 and now regret some of my choices. The 95 is being built from the spare change jar, so it is a painfully slow process. The goal there is to have a road race inspired street beast - 408W stroker motor, full suspension, etc.

Got some chain and turnbuckles last night to support the workbench shelf. My wife is in class tonight, so I should get it all installed.

Finished up the shelving above my work bench last night, but forgot to take pictures. Now on to the next project - determining the next project!

Not much has happened in the garage lately. Picked up a late 50s Wilton 3-in-1 swivel vise and a late 50s Craftsman bench grinder for my birthday:

IMG_29321_zps4f4620a4.jpg

IMG_28991_zpsbf798195.jpg

And started coming up with ideas while I was bored at work:

HQ2014-08-08-084939-1_zps83872c01.jpg

IMG_29461_zps08c5957a.jpg

Now to save up some cash for those two 44" Harbor Freight boxes.

Also trying to finalize my paint scheme for the garage, which is a lot more difficult than it sounds.

Original plan was Gulf Racing colors:

Garage-Gulf1_zpse46b13d7.jpg

I was afraid the blues might be a tad too overwhelming, so I toned them down a bit:

Garage-Gulf2_zps9a69fff2.jpg

If I don't get that powder blue just right, then I think it still might be too in your face for a garage work area. So I started down a different path when I was watching American Restoration. It's based on the old Texaco colors. I think it looks cool, but reminds me a bit of the Italian flag or Christmas:

Garage-Texaco2_zpsf154a93d.jpg

Toned down a bit as before, but might end up too minty when the whole garage is painted:

Garage-Texaco3_zps62631763.jpg

Added some more grey to this one, which might be my favorite look. I'm concerned it might not have goo reflective qualities though:

Garage-Texaco_zps21ae0fac.jpg

My wife's idea was Ford Racing stripes. Is the blue too bold?

Garage-FordRacing_zps68f5d4fc.jpg

BMW //M stripes would be awesome, but no M car in my garage, only an X5:

Garage-MPower_zpsbf4a0dc0.jpg

Martini Rossi stripes would be awesome, but I don't have a Porsche either:

Garage-MartiniRossi_zps4ea0e2e6.jpg

And the last one for fun... Maker's Mark:

Garage-MakersMark_zps103d5548.jpg

I don't think I've found a winner yet, so I am still accepting ideas and critiques!

Im doing my garage in a white top with a red stripe and grey at the bottom. gives it that nice look of cleanliness with the white, the bottom grey will help hide any future scuffs, and the red gives the garage that "pop".

Nice setup, psycho! Nice to have another Bay area GJ member!

That deep 3-car configuration has some serious potential. And I like your taste on vintage C'man machines. I just picked up the same DP in a bench model.

For the color of the shop, I kinda like the original Gulf Racing idea. Maybe all light blue with the orange stripe with black edge stripes. If it is too light, then the dark blue bottom work.
GulfMustang03.jpg

If you are not convinced on the light blue, you can't be wrong with Texaco colors. And Jack has proven that light green works in a shop!

Glad you are not lurking any longer!

I really like that in your garage, but I would really like to be a little different... and maybe a little "vintage."

Thanks! Your garage is one that I am subscribed to and one of the reasons I decided to post mine! The garage is huge, and believe it or not, that causes me some problems. There's so much room I can't keep stuff neat and organized. I am trying to use the small garage mentality to better utilize all the space and keep everything neat and clean. That hasn't worked out so well yet, which is why I came here to get ideas on how to use every nook and cranny as you have. The ultimate goal is to put a four post lift in the deep section so that I can house both Mustangs on top of each other, and use the single garage on the right as my workshop.

The original Gulf theme is tied with the darker Texaco theme as my favorite. I just don't want that blue being blinding or looking like a hospital or baby's room. It needs to look like a workshop and garage.

I like the Texaco color scheme!! But, then, I'm rather partial to greens!!

My green-based color scheme is in my build thread starting at post #114 with the final painting shown on post #116. http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=98038&page=6

Looking forward to the progress. I think the "Gulf Orange: would look good.

Looking good... Good Progress

Thanks everyone! I went out this weekend and searched through god knows how many colors. I came home with two colors schemes that I will call Gulf Racing inspired and Texaco/Jack Olsen inspired.

The Gulf Racing inspired scheme I *really* liked, but it just didn't seem to jive with the garage. I think the dark blue on the bottom would just make dust, dirt, and spiderwebs stand out more than it currently does.

The Texaco/Jack Olsen inspired really won me over - olive green base, red stripe, and tan top. Now I just need to find the "right" colors of each. I even started trying to learn some Sketchup so that I could somewhat see how this is going to look (as well as try to find a spot for the new Gladiator cabinets):

Loving it Chris, as I said via text, I love that color scheme. Very clean and old school!

Sketchup is pretty handy, I designed my deck using it

Thanks, Dan! I'm still learning Sketchup. I think I am still at the stage of it being a bigger pain in the **** that is worthwhile haha.

Yea at first it's best to do it just to learn, but once you get the hang of it, it's a handy tool especially if you want to see how things will look, but with everything to scale.

I'd really like to be good enough to get the garage door tracks in, so that I know exactly where I can place the Gladiator cabinets. This iteration was just to see the paint choice as well as the wish list work bench.

Sneaked out of work early on Friday, so I have a few hours to myself. Decided to hang my second Gladiator cabinet. Note, this is NOT easy to do by one's self... especially when you get it halfway hung and realize the remaining two wall anchors are across the garage.

DF347B78-75A4-4608-A2EA-3F635590894B_zpsb4chsci9.jpg

Moved all my card files under the Gladiator to their new home and filled the Gladiator will all the car detailing **** so I could take down the wire shelves on my wife's side of the garage.

IMG_31201_zps3ebc4bcd.jpg

Had another couple hours to myself Saturday so I decided to take apart the Wilton and test out the "new" Craftsman bench grinder. I quickly realized I would need to go get a wire wheel for the angle grinder... still have the two big parts left to clean up and then I need to decide on a color.

IMG_31231_zps01f294d0.jpg

Then hung the Shelby thermometer:

IMG_31211_zpsf6a4af5c.jpg

That's all I got done before heading to South Florida for the remainder of the weekend.

Nice layout and 4 car garage.... You **** LOL

I've got the space, but not the organization of your place! I'm having a real problem of having so much room that I can't stay organized.

If I can find a good piece of property for a good price, my parents will be living in your neck of the woods soon.

I'm over by Weeki Wachee/ Brooksville. Theres land north of me like that. North of downtown Brooksville is real nice. Dade city/ San Antonio is beautiful also west of town and east of US41 only problem I see with that is you're so far away from stuff in Dade City. Where is Brooksville you can have large piece of land and be close to stores. Ocala I'm not familiar with.

I think they would be fine just about anywhere from Hillsborough on north as long as they got some good looking land where they can build a house... and GARAGE.

So I haven't updated this in almost a year. Problem is that I haven't done much in that time to the actual garage. I've spent a lot of time working on cars and doing stuff inside the house. I honestly can't believe it's been a year. I'm looking through my pictures and can't tell what I did haha.

I did find and hang these in the garage:

IMG_3471_zpsbac47534.jpg

I moved the drill press into a more permanent home on a cleanup day:

40CECA7E-33C1-4D17-B4F0-0306C6319AD7_zpskfizdasa.jpg

I spent a lot of time learning to weld while building these two tables (one more side table in process):

F38EDEF0-8855-4FF7-A6C7-B4105F0C5377_zpsvddvzkkp.jpg

E07B7D29-A6F8-454A-A271-544A0BACEE3B_zpsnxy7lupv.jpg

This past weekend I started building shelved to go over my garage doors in order for me to have a place to store paint and related supplies (this stuff seems to be taking over my garage and keeps growing). That should give me some room to install a water softener that we evidently "need."

In the rendering below I've made the left hand side of the garage where my wife parks the "showroom" where it's more about looks than function. We play darts, she and her brother sit there while I am working elsewhere in the garage; it's just the hangout spot and where she parks. I've always got the Sketchup file open and looking to add/change something, so any ideas are welcome!

We've got a baby on the way now, so I've got a fuse lit under me to at least get the garage cleaned up and the Mustang rolling again, all while trying desperately to complete the projects in the house that I've promised my wife.

Awesome news! The same thing inspired me to get a ton of stuff done before the baby got here. Good luck and have fun, the rendering looks really good, keep us posted. :3gears:
