Saw and sander $9
Channellock, gator tool?, and chrome thing (I have no idea what it is called, anyone?) $1
Rusty channellocks $free

The long chrome thing is called a basin wrench, it's a plumbing tool. I can't open the pic for some reason to see what the other "gator tool" is.

I was going from memory when I called it a gator tool. It has a logo that I think says JAR and says alligator wrench on it, plus pat pend with a date. It has one smooth jaw and the other is grooved on an angle. The opposite end has a flat head screw driver or prying tool. I just did some research on it and found they were popular with four sided nut and bolt heads but looking at this one it doesn't look like it would work for that because the teeth are on an angle. I had never seen one before so I picked it up. To be honest it looks like a gimmick from days long gone.

Today was pick up day from this weeks local farm auction. The collection and estate of decades from one family farm was sold via online auction. There were too many good items that got away from me but I did end up with my truck full inside and out for $171 total. I have not even unloaded or sorted it all yet but I'm loaded now with vintage car wheels (at least 30), metal gas/oil cans, old tools, brand new tools still in the box, wheel covers, power tools old and new, parts, scrap metal, antiques like oil cans and an old blow torch. And I also ended up with 4 vises today out of 8 in the auction I was bidding on. One big guy, 2 pipe vises and a small clamp on vise. I'll sort those out and post on the vise thread.
Here are some pics of the truck loaded down and sagging, front seat and back seat full of stuff.
I will post some of the best of the lot later after sorting.

Looks like a nice haul. Keep the money flowing in SE Michigan!! And let's keep hoarding the tools : )

Stopped at the Re-store yesterday and found a couple things. The best of the bunch is a wooden hand plane. Need to restore it but on the whole it looks like a good start to my plane collection. I found a good video that details refurbishing wooden planes and will detail my work in another thread, once I can get to it.

First round of sorting results from all my treasures gained at a local farm auction this week.
34 total vintage steel wheels, most from the 30's-40's with a couple newer.
auction **** lk-4.jpg

Including a set of 4 Ford wheels that are perfect for my hot rod project. A pair of 16x4 for the front and 16x5 for the rears. Including 4 matching trim rings and one V8 logo hub cap in good condition. This is exactly the set and sizes I had been searching for at an average cost of $1 each.:D:bounce:
4 wheels.jpg

A brand new small parts organizer and a box full of 35 year old NOS Ford fasteners. They were surprisingly rust free in spite of setting outside for the past couple weeks and in storage for so many years. And they all now are sorted into the new organizer.
nos ford bolts.jpg

An assortment of brand new and nearly new power tools.
NIB Craftsman 12V multi tool
NIB Craftsman 12V Auto Hammer
Like new Skill Saber Saw
NIB Chicago Pneumatic Air Cut Off Tool
Like new BernsOmatic propane torch kit
Two like new Dremel cordless tools with tips
Brand new B&D cordless screw driver (but no tips)
NIB Craftsman Air Chisel tool
new auction tools.jpg

Various supplies including spray paints, lubricants, wire, safety glasses, scraper blades, screws, reflective tape, Loctite Super Glue, and a almost full box of "Lumber Marking Pencils". I didn't even know they made them.
supplies from auction.jpg

And last in this sort was a box of six brand new metal tool holder racks. Unfortunately they were left out in the rain and some have started surface rust. They can be cleaned up and painted again but this will hurt their resale value.
6 tool holders.jpg

Now on to sorting the vintage tools and parts including a couple items I can't identify and will rely on the vast knowledge base of GJ to figure out the mystery!

Well - after a 2 week break, I'm back in the game.

I made it over to an estate sale free-for-all this morning. There was a rope across the driveway, and when the seller started to walk up to let people in, there was a stampede under the rope and the rush was on. The guy looked like a deer in the headlights.

There weren't many tools, mostly junk. The pricing was odd. Some things were way overpriced, and others that were worth a few bucks were marked cheap. It took a little squeezing for me to get to the table, but I was able to nick a few things for myself.

Pics 1 & 2 - $20
an adjustable floor lamp (marked $5)
Reinecker 75-100 Mic in case w/points (marked $5)
Lg (5lbs) body spoon (looks blacksmith made) (marked $10)
made in china long reach bent-nose needle nose pliers
K-D #285 Brake Shoe Retaining Spring Tool
unknown 6" stillson (like) wrench
an odd wooden head hammmer

Pics 3-6 - $10
Metal wall cabinet 21"(+)W x 23-1/2"H x 5-1/2"(+)D

After loading the 1st batch in my truck, it dawned on me to see if the wall cabinet was for sale so I went back in. I asked and he said sure, $10 if you can get it off the wall. It was put on with drywall screws with stripped heads. I just couldn't leave it behind. Nine would never forgive me.
Guess what - drywall screws snap if you hit them just right. :D

Today's estate sale... NOSIB! The newspaper wrapping the light shade is dated December 14, 1977!
I paid significantly less than the sticker price.

Yep, anything less then that old price tag warrants a You ****!!

Nice score on the grinder. It's hard to beat NOS. I only found a New Britain puller with some thread damage where it doesn't matter, and a pretty lightly used set of snap ring pliers. Not bad for $3.

OK, I went to my first garage sale in years today, and now I remember why I don't go to them..
A lady who is a friend/former coworker of my wife is having a garage sale to get rid of her late husband's stuff. She told my wife about it, so I went because A- I kind of felt obligated, and B- I thought there might be some nice stuff.
The ad on Craigslist specifically said starts at Noon and no early sales.
I arrived at noon on the dot to find the garage full of people and the majority of the large items (table saw, spindle sander, rolling tool box) already marked SOLD. There were a couple of younger ladies (nieces I believe) running the show. I heard one of them comment "We've been selling stuff since Wednesday."
While I was there, a guy asked about an item in the driveway and they said, oh that's sold. They had forgotten to mark it or move it away. (obviously something else that was spoken for before noon.)

My dad was interested in some router bits, and I got about 15-20 bits in a plastic box for $20, and I spent $8 on a couple of small items. I felt that overall, the pricing was high (example- old, mismatched screwdrivers for $2-4 ea)
I'll bet they won't sell everything.

I think that auctions are more to my liking. :bounce:

You should have had your wife arrange a "pre-screening" on your behalf. Even if you're the first one at the G-sale/estate sale there's typically a lot of insider trading that goes on before the official public debut. (close neighbors, friends, relatives/family, etc).

Next time you have the opportunity via an inside connection, get in there before the public.

Well I managed to squeeze in 3 stops in the last couple days even though we have been cleaning up after a basement flood. The Metro Detroit Area was hit Monday with torrential rains flooding houses, basements, freeways, etc. We survived with only 4" of water in the basement, ruined some old carpet and a few things but mostly just a mess to clean and wash. Alot of stuff is in plastic bins thankfully.
So on to the sales:
Thursday on the way home was a TOO ,bright pink sign said tools!!!
so I bought the Snap On ,Wera and Cman items below for $12. I really like the grip on the Wera it fits the palm very well.

I stopped by a couple of Yard sales on my way home tonight, I got 2 craftsman 3/8 ratchets a craftsman 1/2 in ratchet a 3/8 new-britain nb54 flex head ratchet plus a proto 1/2 drive extension. I just hate people who store their tools in a 5 gallon bucket out side in the rain.
I paid 12.00 for the whole works...Rich

Is that an early version of the SDDD42 screwdriver? If so, I think you'll do very well on that!

Nice find on the proto box as well.

Got up bright and early for the neighborhood garage sale. Ive been waiting for a certain house to have a garage sale since they moved in. They are an older couple and I spotted a snap on taco cart and another snappy top box in their garage when I drove by. So finally today they have a sale. I was the first one there and although he wasn't selling a lot of tools, what he was selling I bought :lol_hitti
Coolant pressure tester $5

Old trunk for my girlfriend to redo. She's been wanting one for awhile $5

Some pony clamps that look like they have never been used, the boxes are worn though $1 each

Then I went home. Sat there for about 5 min then drove back to the sale and bought this for $5. Didn't need it but I it has the changeable tips and I don't have those so I "needed it".

I picked a couple flippers today, nothing special but the price was good enough that I should be able to make up for my time/gas spent.

Today sales was interesting!

First one I showed up to advertise tools but there wasn't much so to not leave empty hand I grab these.
Box of 1/4 drive mustang sockets and slide bar, with a single husky socket and a husky breaker bar.
img_2485.jpg

A complete Xcelite set in a pouch.
img_2485.jpg

Then I went to another estate sale and grabbed these tools! There was a lot of folks in there already so I was surprise to find these in a drawer of plumber tools.
img_2480.jpg

The craftsman 1/2" drive ratchet has V with pat number, then a fleet usa ratchet, and craftsman v series wrenches with a single SK Wayne wrench and Screwdrivers and Williams gasket scrapper!
img_2481.jpg

img_2482.jpg

Afew craftsman socket and these other sockets, any idea? Indestro?
img_2483.jpg

Then I picked up the wife and went to a fleamarket and found this cantilever craftsman tool box sitting there for $3 whole dollars!! I could get my wallet out fast enough for it!

Found an ES very close to home and stopped in two hours after it opened. Surprising to find lots of tools left but then I started seeing prices which were on the high side and they are not dickering on price until tomorrow. I may stop back in there right before they close today and make some offers.
I was able to find a couple tools priced right (Crescent brand pliers and original ViseGrip brand grips that need rust removal) and some always usable supplies. Almost full or new spray paints, a mostly full can of wax and grease remover and a can of PB Blaster. Always handy to have. At $1 per can it's much cheaper than the hardware store. Also some heavy duty angle brackets that will find a use in my garage renovation.

4 planned stops this morning. Only the first was worth the effort, and not by much.

32" Gooseneck prybar
2 - Cman 1/8"x4" screwdrivers (WF)
SnapOn SDD2 screwdriver (not even any abuse !)
Utica #41-5 cutters

I agreed to $10 for the lot. I musta've still been dopey from lack of sleep last night (bad night). I'm usually tighter than that. $2 bucks each, what was I thinking ? :dunno:

But still, it's not too bad. I can live with it.
(let's see ....... a fiver for the bar ...... then it's only $1.25ea for the rest of it)

I'm feeling better now. :lol_hitti

Nice scores guys!

Decent day for me! Started well, ended well, and was consistent throughout!

Actually started yesterday with a Late afternoon sale by a guy I see regularly doing sales at his place and other's houses.

$5 for this Chronograph, currently missing the sky screens and the support rods, but he thinks he can find them, and even if he can't it's an easy fix. It appears to be aimed at paint ball, & arrows and I hope it will work with pellet guns.

First stop today:
Cabellas box Drill Doctor 400 And Channellock nippers, Stanley Hacksaw blade holder, Craftsman 14 mm combo with the "ratcheting" OE, Small Craftsman handle with a Cotter pin jammed in there. not sure what it was intended for. the handle has no clues: "Made in USA" Craftsman and a white stamping of a US flag on the flats. and a Pin spanner. $15

attachment.php

attachment.php

Several other stops:

a buck for 100 ft of line - destined for camping; $3 - 2 mics; Brown and Sharp depth mic and a Lufkin 1-2"; $1 - 3 glass drawer pulls

attachment.php

And one of my fairly regular stops: a fiver for 3 SO and 1 long C Craftsman sockets, SK ratchet and wobble ext, and a Boston Instruments glass tube lined sucker/syringe.

More to come! :D

2 gallon gas container - 1 dollar.

Small bin organizer with some misc nuts/washers/cotter pins and 5 old snap on nut drivers. 1/2, 7/16, 3/8, 11/32, 9/32 - 12 bucks.

Didn't really need the nut drivers, got a craftsman set I'm happy with. If anyone has any need for one or all, let me know.

On friday
Gas tank, files, and 1/2 dr snap-on extension $3

Then today I got out late but decided to go to one sale around noon. The only picture showed an old toolbox. I was sure that all the good stuff would be gone. After much digging(about 30 minutes worth) through an oily mess with my girlfriends help. I started to think the only way this stuff is still here is because the seller wants to much. I told him I couldn't belive no one beat me to it. The seller said that no one took the time to dig for the good stuff. The old man knew I cherry picked the box, but he seemed to appreciate that someone recognized good tools. I think he was happy to see his old tools going to a good home.

Piles across the top from left to right go miscellaneous(wright, blue point, thorsen, williams, blackhawk), plvmb, channellock, kalsey-hayes, bonney, cornwell, mac, craftsman.
From top to bottom go sk, proto, snap-on. $60

The Craftsman handle with the cotter pin is a keychain missing the split ring. Easily put back into service.

Once again, you come up with a nice haul of goodies.
