Got $50 in points to use up by Saturday. Looking to pick up the 3/8" and 1/4". Any coupons stack with Save15? I can't get the pair any cheaper than $63.

Just as a heads up, the code SAVE15 is going to be around for a while.

When I added it, this is what the code information indicated:

At least for now, it's working. Hope this helps.

I've got the premium ratchet in 3/8 and am pleased with it. Would prefer it had a quick release, but good ratchet still. The head is still low profile and the long handle provides extra leverage. Don't know how it would hold up to professional use.

I picked mine up, several years back, close to the current prices, just got the one to see how I liked it. I have seen the set of 3 go for $99, but have only seen that price a couple of times in like 4 years. Usually $120 is pretty good for the 3.

They look like nice ratchets, but I have sworn off none quick release ratchets.

I'm with you. A QR button would make these perfect ratchets.

I've found the thin profile ones to be a fair compromise. The QR button on them is recessed, which puts an end to accidentally losing the socket due to bumping the button, which can happen when the button stands proud from the backside of the ratchet. I especially like QR ratchets for spark plugs. No more tugging on the ratchet and leaving the socket behind on the plug.

The 1/4 has the lockup issue if you push the lever too far. Kind of hard to explain, but the selector switch can move to 2 positions for each direction. Stop at the first position and it's fine; push it a little further, and it causes problems. The 3/8 and 1/2 do not have this issue, nor do the thin profiles.

I read this right before I went to pickup my 1/4 and 3/8. Checked the 1/4 in the store came home and put them on the bench. Just picked them up to play with them and guess which one is all kinds of locked up on the card.

Maybe needs to be opened up, cleaned and lubed? Just a suggestion. Although you probably already thought of that. [emoji4]

I have a set of these the last time they were on sale - I love them. Reach for them every time I need a ratchet out of the toolbox.

The 3/8" ratchet locked up on me once - there was some small rock or other dirt that had gotten in. Cleaned and lubed it and it's as good as new.

Tell me more about the gift card. Do they give extra money for the trouble now?

How is that value compared to what the new purchase price of those drivers? Not familiar what a set of those cost.

Hi, my name is Morris, and it is my pleasure to assist you today.
Morris: Good evening, Alan. Nice to have you on this chat.
Morris: How may I assist you today?
Alan: hello?
Morris: Hi!
Alan: If I canceled an online order that I bought via giftcard
Alan: Do I have to wait for a another in the mail?
Alan: a refund that is
Morris: Let me explain the refund in detail.
Morris: Alan, if you make the purchase through gift card and suppose you wish to cancel the order, then once order is cancelled you will receive a new gift card worth the same value.
Morris: This gift card will be sent to your billing address.
Alan: Can I get a rain check for the price of the item?
Alan: what if the sale is over
Morris: This will arrive within 7 to 10 business days of order cancellation.
Morris: I'm sorry; we do not accept rain check or give it online.
Morris: You will have to check with the stores for rain check.
Alan: The reason is was canceled is because the inventory was wrong online and the item was supposed to in store pickup
Alan: they store found out they didnt have the item
Morris: Oh! I understand your concern, Alan. Let me see what best I can do for you.
Morris: May I have the order number?
Alan: 716837984
Morris: Thank you!
Alan: I would really apreicaite if a refund could be credited back to the same card if thats possible
Alan: I dont want to wait 7-10 days just to place an order and then wait another week for it to arrive.
Morris: I completely understand your concern, Alan.
Morris: Let me explain.
Alan: I dont even need a refund if you could just have them mailed to my adress
Morris: I understand that you want the same products for the same price. Correct?
Alan: yes
Morris: Let me see what can be done.
Alan: I feel waiting for the refund via post is just alot of time wasted.
Alan: especially since I will be ordering the same exact items.
Morris: I understand, Alan.
Morris: I'm sorry this is taking so long. Thank you for your patience, I'll be with you in a moment.
Alan: its fine
Morris: I'm really sorry for the delay. Let me explain in detail.
Morris: Alan, I see that the "Craftsman Premium Grade 1/4 in. Drive Ratchet" and the "Craftsman Premium Grade 1/2 in. Drive Ratchet" which you ordered is now at a lower price compared to the time you placed the order.
Alan: ok
Morris: I understand that your previous order got cancelled by the store. The order was cancelled on 08/16/2014 and you will get the complete refund on your rewards account and new gift card within 7 to 10 business days.
Morris: I'm sorry; we can't use this on a new order.
Morris: Here's what I'll do for you.
Morris: I'll go ahead and place the order for the same with shipping.
Morris: Once order is placed I'll refund the shipping charge, hence giving you free shipping.
Morris: Will that be fine?
Alan: how would it be refunded?
Alan: I can activate the 90 max trial if that would help
Morris: One moment please.
Morris: If you are our Shop Max member then Great!! Please log into your product, you will be able to place an order with free shipping itself.
Morris: If I place the order then initially you will be charged for shipping and later I'll refund the shipping cost.
Alan: but where would the funds come from?
Morris: Alan, let me explain.
Morris: If I go ahead and place the order, then initially you will have to pay the shipping and after placing the order I'll issue refund for the shipping cost.
Morris: But if you are logging into your profile and then placing an order, you will directly get free shipping.
Alan: If I log in its going to want me to pay for them some way
Morris: Yes, Alan. For reorder you will have to pay because as mentioned earlier, we will not be able to use the same gift card and rewards points on the cancelled order unless it's credited back.
Morris: If you want to use the same rewards points and gift card then you will have to wait for 7 to 10 business days.
Morris: From my side, I'll mention clear notes on the order to honor the same price if you order the same in future.
Morris: May I know what have you decided?
Alan: if you place the order where the funds be drawn from to cover the shipping?
Alan: where would*
Alan: The giftcard?
Alan: hello?
Morris: Sorry for the delay.
Morris: Alan, if you place the order, since you are a Shop Max member you will directly get free shipping.
Alan: I would like you to place the order, just wonder what is going to get charged for the shipping
Morris: There will be no need for post sale adjustment for shipping cost.
Alan: I would like you to place the order, just wondering what is going to get charged for the shipping?
Morris: Let me summarize.
Morris: Alan, your merchandise total will be $94.48.
Alan: ok
Morris: Good news!!!
Morris: I'll provide you free shipping from my side.
Morris: Alan, the may I use the email address @gmail.com to place an order?
Alan: yes
Morris: May I have your first and last name, delivery address with apartment number and daytime phone number?
Alan: Im just confused, when I place the order it was $75.08
Alan: now its $94.48?
Morris: Let me check.
Morris: I see that you applied coupon.
Morris: Let me check if it's still applicable or not.
Morris: Alan, I have applied the same coupon and now the merchandise total is $79.48 and with free shipping.
Morris: Shall we complete the order?
Morris: In your previous order also the merchandise total was $79.48.
Morris: Tax was $5.88.
Morris: And the previous order total was $85.36.
Alan: I took a screen shot for you
Alan: http://i.imgur.com/
Morris: Alan, I'm sorry; we do not have an access to check the scree shot.
Morris: Let me re-summarize the order total of your cancelled order.
Morris: Merchandise total: $79.48.
Morris: Tax: $5.88.
Morris: Total : $85.36.
Morris: You have paid $75.08 through gift card and $10.28 through points.

All of this ******** for ****** ratchets that lock up? Spend the same money on some Armstrong Maxx from a reputable dealer (Epsteins) and save yourself the headache.

Both Armstron and Craftsman Premium ratchets are made by USA. Both made by Apex. Both use the same gear mechanism. Only difference is one is 88 teeth and the other is 84.
Im surprised that only Craftsman Premium would lock up, and Armstrong wouldnt.

I got the 1/4" and 3/8" ratchets. You really have to push the 1/4" over before it locks up. On mine anyhow. And once it locks up just fiddle with it for a few seconds and it comes loose.

So they use the same gear mechanism other than they have different gears and pawls in them (which is the entire gear mechanism)?!? Yes, they use the same basic design, but the two ratchets are very different. Both the gearwrench and Craftsman 84T versions are known to have an abnormally high lock up rate. There are well over a hundred complaints about these ratchets on this forum.

The 88T armstrong don't have the same failure rate. There are a few members with complaints, but not anywhere near the number that complain about the 84T ratchets. A few people even in this thread have received locked up ones. Same with the hot deal thread a few weeks ago on the 84T gearwrench versions. Happens every time a thread comes up on these ratchets.

The good news with the 84T ratchets is, that once you get a working one, they usually never give you a problem in the future (unless you manage to get crud in there to jam it, but that will happen to any ratchet).

im not here to disagree anyone (I read all the lock up forums). Just a little surprised that by simply adding 4 teeth (and a bit different paw for the 88) the locks goes away.
: )
I also have a 3/8 craftsman premium ratchet in my collection. : )

I don't think you can draw that conclusion as the percentage of ownership for Armstrong is not nearly much as the Cman/Gearwrench crowd.

I'm assuming there was a functional improvement to the design, not just adding teeth.

In any case, the 60T is regularly considered to have the best reliability of the Danaher/Apex ratchets. :dunno:

There are quite a number of Armstrong and Matco 88T ratchets on this board. Many members have them and use them frequently, yet there are few complaints.

Another question...

Why don't the 60T gearwrench, craftsman, and every other rebrand under the sun of this ratchet have the same lock up problem? Why doesn't the 120XP have this problem? The 60T design has been sold for years and in massive numbers. Yet there are so few complaints about those ratchets failing. The 120XPs are fairly new, but they also sell in very large quantities (remember the trident discount prices on this in which thousands were sold to garage journal members?). I've seen 2 complaints about 120XP failures on this board (not saying there are more, but obviously very rare). There is something in the design of the 84T ratchets that causes problems. Both the taiwan gearwrench versions and the USA Craftsman versions (two different factories) suffer from the lock up issue. Either there isn't enough money at the price point they are sold at to get tolerances tight enough, or there is a fundamental flaw in the design.

But like I said, once you get a good one of the 84T ratchets, they seem to never give you trouble again.

Just tried a few things.

84T kit into a matco 88T ratchet seemed fine but every revolution there was a hard spot and I couldnt turn it with out the aid of a socket.

88T kit into a craftsman 84T ratchet seemed fine until I tightened down the cover. Once the cover was tight I could only turn it with the aid of a socket.

Both of these ratchets are well used.

Both of these ratchets are 3/8" drive.

Both of these ratchets work fine when I put oem parts back in them.

Both of these were cleaned and re-lubed with a few drops of the red lube of love.

Open the Craftsman Premium ratchet back up and look at the back side of the 84T gear and the inside of the ratchet. There is a raised circular ridge on the ratchet body side with a corresponding relief on the Craftsman 84T gear.

You can put the Craftsman 84T gear in the other Armstrong, Matco and Gearwrench ratchets but cannot put those brands gear in the Craftsman premium due to the machined circular ridge. Why they did it like this with the Craftsman premium is asinine.

Also, I am sure there is a specified required torque for the Craftsman Premium ratchet cover plate screw and just cranking it down with "German Torque" of "Gutentight" is causing an unnecessary binding between the cover plate and gear

Kiatech's experience is what I've been saying about Sears FOR YEARS: they have no concept of customer service. If you order an item at a great price and get it, kudos. Just be ready to not get your item because of their mistake, and they have no idea how to extend sales beyond sale dates, even if their error caused you to not get your item. But they will baffle you with ******** over the phone for hours, it's like they don't know how to say "no" so you have to read between the lines.
